I'm in SoCal, but the concept of a California Burrito doesn't ring a bell. What is it?
While I'm here:
The Junkyard
Simi Valley, California
Amazingly diverse menu! Love the Stinkin' Fries! |

California Burrito is a carne asada burrito with French fries or potatoes in it and sour cream instead of gwak (guacamole). _________________ Prosit!

Or Young's Dairy. We used to live in Dayton and would ride our bikes 20 miles each way for their pecan rolls for breakfast.

Chilli Johns in Burbank California. Open like 6 months a year for lunch only. Little tiny easy to miss place, older trademark than coca-cola. They have medium, mild, and hot. Meat chilli with side of beans or spaghetti noodles.
The Hat, I know of one in Irwindale, Ca. Best pastrami anywhere. Huge sammiches!
Tommy Burger, Castaic, CA REALLY good burgers.
Fatty Pattys, Vancouver Wa, get the slop, I double dog dare you to eat a whole order. Hash browns, ham, onions, bell pepper, not sure what else, swimming in brown gravy.
The Breakfast House, Portland, Or. Expect to wait for a table. Everything on the menu is excellent! |

Tommy Burger, Castaic, CA REALLY good burgers. |
OK, this gets confusing, so pay attention! Tommie's Castaic Cafe, is not an Original Tommy's Burgers.
The restaurant Bob is referring to in Castaic is Tommie's Castaic Cafe and it is more of a sit-down cafe with a full menu than a burger stand. I wouldn't call it an Original Tommy's imitator. The food there is wonderful.
Original Tommy's is a privately owned (not franchise) chain in SoCal. http://www.originaltommys.com/ They've been around since 1946. Originally a real hamburger shack with outdoor seating (if any!) the newer stores have grown into more of an ultra-clean In-N-Out-style operation, losing a lot of their charm in the process. One odd thing about the older Tommy's was that each store's food was a bit different in preparation, so your first Tommy's location was usually the one you preferred.
Tommy's Shack Good:
Modern Tommy's, in new corporate clothing. OK, but not as good:
Just to confuse the issue, a couple of miles south of Tommie's Castaic Cafe on I-5 is an original, but corporate-style Tommy's in Valencia. |

The old shack entices me more than the Wendy's look of the new..
New doesnt mean better.

I ate at a new Tommy's in Simi Valley and I had an odd sense of eating a Tommy's burger in an In-N-Out. I understand the need to appeal to the newer McDonald's-raised generation, but I honestly feel the burger doesn't have as much panache in that sort of setting. |

Road trip... fast...fast 48 hrs to and fro O-Hi-O..
Found a lil place.... that really didnt look half bad... I had whiskey on the rocks and change of a dollar for the juke box.....
Oopps sorry left over lyrics in my mind from the Rockabilly concert.
Found a lil' place..... in Troy.
Troy seems like a nice mid sized town. PLENTY of small downtown charm and lots of smooth flowing traffic..
It even seemed there was some crusin' going on.. Sweet...
A little asking around in Huber Heights didnt get me too far... but I did get a nod to head North to Troy to:
The Caroline
5 South market Street
Troy, OH 45373
We were timing out heading the aforementioned concert we were attending.. so had to have an early dinner..
Its an upscale downtown venue near a traffic circle.. indoor and outdoor seating with a good craft beer selection.
The food was flawless.. The long haired chief (Wife) had the Red Trout special and I had the Santa Fe Chicken....
Nice portions and perfectly cooked and seasoned.
Only wish we would have had more time and saved room for dessert.. as they have an exclusive Dutch Apple Ice Cream.. that sounded ..... awesome..
Price point and atmosphere on the upper end.. but IMO it has that local downtown feel, is off the main stream... so nearly perfect.

It was KILLER....
And after ... we dropped in a Tim Hortons for a mocha offee, a cinnamon bun, and a boston creme... chain yes.. ... but hit the late spot..
