recently had a to end rebuild, installed now but there seems gaps all around the bay. and boy does it get hot in there, even the rear bumper is too hot to touch !!
Can you kindly put up a shot of your engine bay, close ups would be great too, I may be missing some vital tinwear but its my 1st aircooled and also my 1st Trekker/Thing so I have nothing to compare
cheers

It's not unusual for the bumper to get hot, especially if the exhaust pipes exit through the bumper. |

I know you want people to share their engine bays, and I will post a picture tomorrow. But the first thing you might want to do is get rid of the fuel filter in the engine bay. It is a real hazard |

I am not going to agree with you on the fuel filter. I have worked for the vw dealer for years I started at the dealer in 1964 we always installed the plastic filter in that location at the dealer I also have had my thing safety inspected at the nsra shows and have asked the inspectors there about the plastic filter they also agreed that it was the place to mount the filter just make sure I used a plastic or metal filter and do not use a glass filter you may not agree with me or you have had some problem doing this but I have done this since 1964 with no fires. Just my opinion. |

Yes, moving the fuel filter is on my list. I already bought a Kelley Speed filter mount.

Here's a page from the Parts Manual, available in the technical section. It shows all the engine tin. You might want to compare it to what you have on your engine.

In my experience #8 in this diagram often seems to go missing on AC VWs for some reason. Every piece of tin is important and needed. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Generator stand is slanted/crooked, and the fuel pump is in the wrong place! _________________ Jerry Henning

Not to mention that (tell it all) oil filter housing and "10" distributor. Super nice 356 unit for sure. |

When I had to work on the 79 Beetle convertible belonging to my buddy's girlfriend, I noticed they relocated the filter out of the engine compartment and put it below.
She said the VW dealer did it for free as a safety measure, when they had moved previously to West Virginia.
I don't know if the dealer had a fear of a lawsuit, since the car was serviced there and he felt it would be a problem if there was a fire, if he got info from the VW corporate chain, or what. No idea.
The only reason I know is that she wrote me back and was surprised a dealer would do anything for free and wondered if she was somehow getting suckered.
I got the call because I saved her $1,200 from an unscrupulous VW indie in Michigan who wanted to do some willd things for high dollars. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

Do you know-- would the glass filter recommendation still apply if you planned to relocate the fuel filter outside the engine compartment? I have a glass filter arrangement and am interested. Thanks _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |
