Ring gap. For compression rings, I was suggested to follow a formula of Bore in inches x .0045" for top ring and or .0055" for 2nd ring, similar to listed here: http://www.wiseco.com/PDFs/Manuals/RingEndGap.pdf

This means my top ring should be closer to .016" and 2nd ring .020". I measured AA rings to be at least .020" for the top one and as wide as .025" for the 2nd one which seems on the loose side. I'm considering buying some Grant rings to see if I can obtain tighter gap.

Grant rings are not bad.

Who did you use for your machine work?

I finally got parts back from machine shop, so I'm doing mockups. I come up with too much deck -- around to .08":

Case deck surface is flat and cylinder sits on it nicely:

Crank and rods are both VW parts:

Not sure why deck is so much, but I suppose this gives me an opportunity to set the deck as tight as possible. I'm considering having the cylinders shortened.

I'm coming up with following deck height measurements:

#1: .060"
#2: .058"
#3: .072"
#4: .070"

I will have machinist re-deck the case, removing .010" from 1/2 side and .020" from 3/4 side. This way I should be at .050" on all 4 cylinders which will put me at 8.7:1 CR.

I also got the Gene Berg 26mm oil pump and Full Flow kit with stainless steel hose.

Had the case re-decked, cutting 0.010" from 1/2 side and 0.020" from 3/4 side. Now I have following deck height measurements:

#1: .050"
#2: .048"
#3: .050"
#4: .050"

I haven't re-cc'ed the heads yet, but if they are at 51cc like they are supposed to be, that puts me at 8.7:1 static CR. Should work.

Things are moving along. If all goes well, this will be the final mock-up before final buttoning up.

I have to seal the gap of the doghouse. I'll try to get the engine in the car tomorrow, we'll see what happens.

Very nice job! Perfect "around the county" type of car, IMO. Not too nice, not too fancy, but not a total pile of crap either. My only complaint would be the stinger.....but your Empi muffler will end up sounding like the stinger within a few months under normal use anyways. Once the muffler casing splits open, the muffler is no longer a "quiet" pack after the baffles start rattling around Rolling Eyes ). I bet it will get some decent MPG once you get it all tuned in.

I run straight out the side of the full flow cover, having a 90 there is restrictive and has to be a pain for hose routing. I put 90s at the filter adapter, which I mount on the left rear bumper bracket.

Thank you, John. I already ran into that issue and it's on the list of things to address. I actually do have one 90 at the filter for lines to reach, I need to move the other one from the pump cover to the filter. I'll do it this weekend along with oil change/rejet/plug check/etc.

I only had the stinger on until the Phat Boy came in, it's quieter and more civil.

This car is far from original and pristine, but it was not very expensive. There are much nicer cars on CL in 6K-8K range. I am project/subproject-oriented and learn by doing, this car works out well to keep me busy. I like to drive the twisties so it's mainly being set up with that in mind.

Waiting on 30mm venturis and some jets, I'll try to dial it in as best I can.

That fatboy system is nice and looks good too! Were you able to use the existing 1-3/8" header with that muffler or did you buy a whole new header to go with the new muffler? Is it a Dynomax muffler or does it even have any stampings on it? Looks like it's from A-1?

I'm curious to see how much improvement you see with those 30mm vents. I'm thinking of running the same vents in my Kadrons when I get my 1915 done. I didn't even notice the 90 coming out of the pump cover, but I sure like the Berg stainless line kit they sell. I have a couple of those kits that I've used over the years.

Yes, it is the Berg kit, I also have their 26mm oil pump. I was intimidated by setting up full flow (this is my first full-flown setup) and reports of oil pumps being loose in the case, so I went with the Berg parts for oiling needs.

Yes, the Phat Boy is the one from A1, using the Magnaflow muffler. I got the raw version to save money and sprayed it with high temperature ceramic clear coating. For header, I'm running a Bugpack 1 1/2" merged header, stinger came with that. I decided to not mess with the existing EMPI exhaust, I'm using 40x35 heads and the 1 3/8" street header would be too small (those #1 and #3 j-tubes have really narrow passages).

If you are around you could check it out in person. It is a work in progress and is far from perfect, but runs better than a stock 1600 so far. I tried 32mm vents already but they felt too big, so I decided to try making the 30mm ones work first. Worst comes to worst, I'll stick the 28mm back in there. For jets to try out, I'll have 50 and 55 idles, 127.5, 130 and 140 mains, 150 airs. I'm at sea level.

The Berg kit is nice. I like that muffler and header, and I didn't even notice the merged collector until after I posted., nor did I realize what size valves you were running. How loud is the Magnaflow?

I bought one of those EMPI header setups almost 15 years ago and it was total junk! Good call not messing with it. You really needed the 1-1/2" setup anyways.

Thanks for the invite. I have a lot of stuff going on right now with my health, so I have been out of the scene for awhile, but I wouldn't mind meeting up in the future once I get "back on my feet" (and off my ass! Laughing ).

at some point you need some "in between" idle jets. Most guys don't know the difference between a 50 and a 55 idle jet is 20%! That's far too great a change for one jet change. So a 52 is a good in between one to have, same for 45-50, get a 47 if you need smaller than 50. Sneak up on the tune.

In many cases a 50 is too lean and a 55 too rich, that's the result of a 20% jet change. Same for 55-60.
