The metal top of the dash is grey-black and is semi-gloss to satin. I repainted mine (spray gun Glasurit paint + flattener) and replaced the duct covers with new. You can see it here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6644576#6644576
FYI: Wolfsburg West sells grey-black in spray cans if you choose to go that route. |

Dang man. Although it could have been way worse than that broken valve. Good think it didn't cause other problems!
I need to repaint my metal dash as well, so I'm curious to see how yours turns out. I have new vent covers from Bus Depot (Just Kampers part I believe) and they are nice.
There's a VW camp out and show (NVMBRFST) at Emma Long park here in Austin if you happen to get it up and going soon. November 14/15/16. _________________ 1976 Westy

So I went the cheaper route with the dash. Rustoleum satin black(as notchboy recommended). Eche I wanted to go with your idea but just couldnt pay the extra dime. At least its not rusty now...
New dash installed... a little dark at this point, sorry for the poor photo. More pics when its better light.

Thanks bala. Head is at the machine shop now, might get it back next week. Wish I could go but I am camping in lost maples during that time(without the bus unfortunately). _________________ Sam

Your dash looks good, just wanted you to know the original color. The difference mainly shows in sunlight, otherwise in shade looks similar to straight satin black. Main thing is you didn't use gloss.
Could I ask about your ash tray? I have the strong impression the ash trays in these later Westys used a decal for the manual shift pattern. Could you tell me if yours looks like it could be a decal? I'm thinking about having some made. |

Great thread! It gives me a good deal of hope that my '76 will fire right up with a battery and some fresh fuel. Thanks for the pictures and keep up the good work!
BTW...I too have a '76 chrome yellow westy that has a set of BFGs sitting inside waiting on the bus to run. Your's looks awesome.
My (less productive) '76 westy thread if you're interested:
