The top section of the boxed frame that runs from front to back had some dodgy areas so I cut it out and made patches. I was able to opsho, prime, and paint the inside of the frame too before I weld it up.
Received my tophats that go under the load bed. Cut away old and fitted these in place. Not welded yet. The quality of these panels is just amazing.
Now that the rear frame section was done, it was time to mount the triangle and get the apron lined up and happy gapped. Thats my new term. I might be losing my mind a little bit.
I had ordered a pair of triangles but later learned that Gerson only really makes the passenger side. This actually worked out great because my driver is not all that bad. So I stole the captive nuts since mine were no good.
Welded them on (you will see a small section of the triangle that is a little crusty that I later cut out. I'll use the gerson triangle to patch it.
I bolted the passenger triangle directly to the apron and it worked out perfect to get the triangle in the perfect spot. I tacked it, and then removed the apron to get some nice solid welds in that 13gauge steel.
Apron fits great! Also started fitting my engine trays to see how they oriented with the apron. I was excited to fit this apron as I purchased it several months ago for a steal.

My single has been under the knife this winter. I do anticipate it being ready for the bash. They could be twins. Just think of it as a little extra motivation. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

Managed to squeeze a little time in and work on the boxed frame. Before I could close it up, I realized I had to fab a patch on the left side. See arrows.
Next I could weld in the top sections from front to back.
Next up was the d-pillar, which was completely missing the bottom 10" so I had to use the driver as a reference. To be honest, it took me a while to figure out exactly how it should line up with the frame. Once I had it mocked up I realized the pillar was too short.
So I knew I had to fabricate something to extend it, since Gerson does not make full size pillars for my year truck. As luck would have it the scraps from my c-pillar were almost exactly the same pressing, so I measured a bunch of times and then made the piece.
And finally welded in. If anyone esle is doing this repair its very helpful to have the apron handy to test fit. For me the d-pillar wanted to go too far into the apron opening which would have been big trouble, so just test fit that apron just in case.
Upper triangles are just in place. I need to clean up the metal so they fit nice and tight like factory.

I think you're being too nice, its really just an east coast rusty mess!
Welded in the triangles on the passenger side, making sure to weld a captive nut for the tail light ground.
Next I had to extend my corner since the corner I purchased was a wee bit short. The previous owner had riveted a panel and mudded over that and I didn't realize how far gone the corner was when I ordered this panel. So I decided to make it work by adding more metal. You can see a significant dent on the side that I need to dolly out.
Welded in the corner
Battery tray and engine side panel fit really well.
Took a break on the passenger side and decided to do the drivers side while it was all still fresh in my head, lessons learned and all.
Took care of the captive nut on this side too. I copied the original location and ended up using the original nut and bolt.
Test fit the battery tray, triangles, and engine panel. I also marked the areas I need to patch before fitting the corner.
Hipster Cam. Its so dusty when I took this pic that the black and white made it look like smoke.

Still dragging that mig around on the floor? |
Yes sir. A cart won't work well in this garage. As you can see its a tight squeeze. |
What you need is to stick a lazy susan on the bed of the single, and jam the welder and tank on that
Honestly, dragging the welder around is a pain, I hear you. There's always and air hose, two other extension cords, and piles of new and old metal to trip over and get tangled up in. At one point, I was so sick of dragging my giant esab around that I hooked up the spool gun, as it has a 20' lead. When you do get around to it, a grocery store shopping cart turns into a welding cart in about 20 minutes. Easy.
I just finished checking out this build from start to finish, man you have brought that back! All of the patches that you've fabbed yourself are impressive, great work. |

Thanks Seth and Corey for the comments, keeps me going. Kurth and Seth are both right, I need to make a cart or buy one. Like anybody else time is a limited resource around here with two young kids.
I finished up the honey-do list on Friday and managed to squeeze in some Saturday afternoon vw time, no complaints here!
Had to finish patching up the a-pillar:
Fitted the corner. I have to thank Ken Shapiro for sending me loads of pics of his factory corner. I need lots more replacement steel but when I went to my steel yard they didn't have any scraps big enough. I'll check again this week.
Welded in the Engine Trays. You really have to get the voltage high to lay down some nice welds against that frame. I am vey happy with these.
Bought some jewelry, a one year only engine lid handle. I like original chrome, I did the same thing on my oval. The catch that mounts to the apron is enroute from Wagen Werks so I can make sure everything is closing properly in the rear.

Im in Bel Air. Its good to see someone else copes with the lovely rust we get here on the east coast! When can I haul my next project over ?
Im eyeing those patina'd gates you have, although I don't have a truck, It'd be nice to acquire all the parts so I can put the parts around me, sit in a 2/3 seat, and make engine noises and feel like Im sitting in one
