Anyone have any information on this crown 5023 super diff? Is it a good diff to use? It has 11/17T gears. Also what would it be worth?

I had the bug poop version, it had the rong gears in it..so i put the right ones and took some oe shafts and cut&drilled them as the shafts that come with it were soft & wore out.I also put in biger roll pins. and angle drilled for oiling and a oil exhaust to let the oil out. if they do not have a properly placed exhaust port they fill with fine steel dust/muck.witch is nice if you pull it apart to clean them out but that also kills the gear thrust surfaces as thats were it gets slung to... as with everything you need to be smarter than it is.

The old school Crown IRS super diff isn't worth any more than a new China IRS super diff. All it is is a solid casting. The stock spider gears and the stock end gears that go inside the housing are still stock parts that fail at the same rate.

Twice on my Ghia I broke the splines off the end gears on my China IRS diff.

There are no oiling problems associated with IRS super diffs. All the oiling failures are with the swing axle diffs and the spade end of the axles.

Several years ago I blew up the spider gears on a ZF LSD drag racing my Ghia.

And that is why Dave Folts sells his billet aluminum super diff that uses 091 side and spider gears.

Dave, was the one you broke a welded one or a one piece?

Welded. Broke it clean in 1/2 on the weld joint. Called Rancho and they confirmed the weld joint was a problem on several of them. I believe that is why ERCO quite making them. Replaced both end gears with stock and it's still cruising along today in my Dunebuggy.

Now that’s disappointing! I thought someone, maybe it was Long Enterprises, had new, one piece ones made at one time, but I couldn’t seem to find any info on them.

Maybe it was Long or ERCO can't remember who. Never heard of a one piece. All I know about are the welded ones where they spliced the gear end of a Type I with the splined end of 091.

Dug it up in my logbook back in 2014.

Ghia with 2276 street engine maybe 165 HP racing with no belt and 20 PSI in Phoenix 26X6 slicks. Pass before it broke 13.45 @98.89 MPH. Usually launch around 5000 RPM. 4.12 R&P with 1.48/1.04.

It broke clean at the weld joint.

With 20 pounds in the Slicks it should not have broke! Bad weld!
Guess I'm just lucky Laughing I've had my slicks down to 15 lbs. I watch the Tree not the Tach so I have no idea what my Launch rpms are? no way to data log, maybe my PLX can do that? Laughing Tried taking a buddy for a ride but he got scared and forgot to look at the Gauge Shocked Rolling Eyes I'm gonna try a 2 step Launch this season, should be interesting,I've never launched on Boost Embarassed
Cheers,Mike
