hello yall! some may recognize me from the Bay forum....im invading, yall can thank Jason (notchboy) and Joe (JSMSkater) for that....now onto the reason for my invastion....

three years ago i bought my 1978 Bus about 3 blocks from home. after a tough negotiation....(almost none) i got this for 300 bucks:

it was on the way home from school, and i was usually walking or riding a bike.

well, in my stunning observational skills, i noticed a car behind a fence that was covered in ivy (the fence, not the car) and all i could see was the grills on the rear of this beauty:

so i knocked on the door...and was told that the original owner lived on the other half of the duplex and was his mother.

upon talking to mom, i found out she really was the owner, it had low miles and had been sitting for quite a while.

so i asked if she was interested in selling, to which she said no. i tried my best, told her i was a huge VW fan, and that i was getting the bus 2 houses down and was a up n coming mechanic, trying my absolute hardest to convince her. yet she was firm!

so i left her my email and ohone muber and asked her to call me if she ever wanted to get it fixed up and running again.

within about a year, i got an email.

Shocked

Quote:
Hi Stuart,
Some time back you gave me your contact information and said you were interested in the restoration of my 71 squareback (here on Olympic View Dr.). I wonder if you would like to have the car for your own, free for the hauling, as I am forced to get rid of it, and would like it to go to a loving home. Or, if you aren't interested, do you know anyone who might be?
Thanks,
Cheryl Spasojevic

needless to say i nearly wet myself with excitement.

Very Happy

except i had about 8 cars at the time, of which 4 ran

so the parents said no.

Crying or Very sad

in a weak moment, i let a friend in on the deal and he gave me a small finders fee of 400, which was not nearly what the car was worth, and i was sick to my stomach at the thought of loosing such a rare opportunity Sad

every time i have seen him since, i have asked him to resell it back to me...and last week i finally convinced him. 900 bones later....

and along with that, i convinced the parents. (i still have 6 cars, now 8 again, but only two dont run, this included) (thank you again mom n dad, you rock for fulfilling my addiction #bestparentsever)

and yesterday, i pulled it out of his dry heated storage where it has sat untouched for the last three years, not a battery installed, not a drop of gas added, not a car wash later....

and i was slightly happy to say the least

on the way home, i decided to roll by Mom's House....

and i happened to catch her outside so i didnt get her reaction on camera, but i did get this:

so i am pretty excited, as is she that i got it back and i will hopefully be going through all the steps to get it back on the road again. the goal is to clean it up, get it driving reliably, and daily it for a while, and sell my other cars...

now some cool history i have found out so far is that the car made a trip through yugoslavia at least once as she is yugoslavian. so....as a teaser for yall, she sent me a scan of the first of (hopefully many) pictures of the trip.

(note reverse image (see oil filler) due to scan. photo circa 1972 or so.

hoping to go back and sit down with a recorder and listen to some fabulous stories and see some amazing history with the car and the original owner Smile Thank you Cheryl! Very Happy

thanks Jason Cool

it looks like the fuel pump was stuck, managed to to get it to run shortly by playing carburetor and dumping a light stream of gas down the intake.... got the pump to run and cleared the old gas out of the lines by leaving the test port open till the gas came out cleaner...then tried to start and it only barely wants to run.....not quite sure what the dealio is yet as my battery died....videos and more pics to come soon Smile

....and i found 4 leaks in the engine compartment alone Shocked
