Thanks to some unexpected blessings, dad has the next few days off from work, as do i, and we are going to get some work done on it for sure! Starting at the tank and working my way back with the fuel lines. After that we will go with whatever keeps it from running next. one step at a time! Better pics to come also...just realized tonight how blurry those old pics are....fresh ones asap! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

So we went out to see the squareback today...
it was on top of a tarp in the grass next to the house, so we moved it into the driveway.
started to work on getting it cleaned out of all my parts stash...(yeah it fit in the back so i loaded it up while the house was on the market...) now its all in my bus.
but whatever
got the gas tank uncovered:
then removed:
then i decided i had a pressure washer right there...why not?
so i did.
got the whole car washed down of 90% of the junk that was covering it. totally missed the bottom of the engine and transmission which were totally nasty...but ill get those with the one at work (steam washer...HOT water and use of epic degreaser is nice too
shined this wheel up one night when i was bored with some steel wool....came back nicely with 5 minutes of effort
here you can see my bus loaded up:
LR fender a bit rusty...
found rust in places i never would have expected since i dont know what to expect on these cars...:
filler neck:
behind washer bottle:
behind the jack:
spare tire area not too rusty, but was dirty....(WAS)

so back to those fuel lines...
all new:
getting the proper filter tomorrow...JSMskater gave me a new one recently, but was so old it broke while installing it (thankfully, rather then while driving) because it was so brittle...!
while i had the washer out, i hit the drain tube holes just above the fuel outlets, so those are nice n flowing freely now
anywhere i found packed dirt rusting the body away, i made sure to soak and rinse out all the mud i possibly could, so that it would minimize continuing to rust.
got the tank all back in:
and promptly forgot to get under and attach the two fuel lines....(was running short on hose, and didnt leave myself enough to attach with tank lifted slightly...gotta remedy that next time)
pulled this guy out to find it all seized up...took it apart and cleaned it...
also found this in my tank:
gonna add 5 gallons tomorrow to see if it reads. if not, ill dig into it again later. if it works though, thatd be kinda cool
back to the engine:
open the hatch!
who can see whats wrong in this pic?
between that last two pics youll notice that 4 and 3 plug wires are reversed....
(also note drive gear was found to be installed 180* out by joe during last text round, so #1 is the 2 o clock posistion, top right in the second pic)
bet you a buck itll run smoother this time around eh?
also found out my harness has been repaired once before at least:
kinda hard to see, but in the first pic, both boots are brown and one is much to long with heatshrink on the wires, where in the next pic one is black, and the other is brown. im assuming the spliced in brown used to be black.
didnt get a chance to test it for loss of daylight, and fuel pressure. wrestled with 3 stock pumps for 45 minutes....im buying a ranger pump tomorrow and bypassing the extra loop. that crap is so ridiculous i nearly lit a match under it.
gas really burns my skin and i hate it. just thought i would let you all know.
i REALLY hate Gasoline on my skin.
smarty pants me though remembered safety glasses thankfully, so no injury's were reported in the repair of this vehicle today (thats a first! )
while back there, replaced both lines off the frame rails, all four lines to each injector, with FI hose clamps (old ones from my bus, stock FI bus fuel line clamps) CSV hose (replaced while testing earlier this year) crossover hose from left to right side of engine, hose to regulator from 1&2 injectors, and everything got hose clamps that were NOT the cut into the rubber kind. got proper fuel line clamps,i promise
plan to redo the front hoses with a proper filter and a Ranger pump to simplify things and make it work properly and reliably.
we tried to run those 3 stock pumps with diesel fuel through them and whacked them with a hammer and couldnt get em to work. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

found a hornets nest while cleaning it out....the bees were still on it when we found it, and they were moving nice n slow thanks to the cold...so we cleaned them up nicely
right fender area:
got some pics of the outside once it had dried a bit after washing:
interior:
dash in good shape:
only crack i saw:
upside down vin:
awesome quality radio:
got a few really cool pics too:
with the bus
(ignore the bump to my bus....its still sore)
and a couple of the sunset too!

I use WD-40,Kroil etc to get rid of the hornets. Take all the rubber mat & padding off the engine deck, so you can clean/paint that area. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

for some reason i thought it would be a little better condition than it was...i looked closely at it today, and i think your right, its coming out to clean it and used something else to insulate. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

So we took off again for monroe today (45 minutes away) to see what we could get going on the squareback....
got there, changed into some working clothes, and got to it!
brought with me 3 feet of fuel line, just in case i needed it, and i used it all.
brought a new ranger pickup fuel pump, total cost was 85 plus tax, but i had a gift card, so it only cost me about 40 bucks
new fuel filter, 14 bucks
and a couple valve cover gaskets, just in case.
got the fuel lines installed, made a harness adapter for the ford pump, and got it all installed and tested the system by grounding a wire in the back to run the pump. worked great, and held steady at 29 psi.
test fire it dad!
nothing.
checked for spark, since i had fuel, and found no spark.
checked under the cap and found the points still wet from the day before, so blew it dry, then sprayed some worth brake cleaner (ultra fast drying) on the contacts to dry it out. check again for spark, and got it!
try it again dad!
Link
got it!
Link
so we cleaned up the area around the car, and zip tied the fuel pump and filter into place so it wasnt hanging, and closed it all up.
yeah....its the lowest hanging part on the car and i really need to move it, but i was having a difficult time with my zip ties, and i fully plan on using the stock pump bracket, so ill get it fixed later on down the road. besides, i have zero intention of driving this car offroad at all.
after all that getting it running business was taken care of, we put on the proper plates....and i found this under the old one:
moved the front VW plate frame to the rear (collector plates are rears only, and tabs never expire) and installed the collector plate shortly after.
frame seen in this pic on the front plate:
from the original dealer who sold the car!
got it down the road!
Link
then drove to monroe from the house (about 15 minutes away) and stopped for gas and a drink...
took this pic:
they look so similar if you look at how they are parked, and the bumpers
then found out i couldnt move due to the rear brakes holding for some reason. up to this point they seamed to be okay...barely worked, but worked enough to get home.
note i had to use the stock jack (sketchy....) since i left my floor jack at home...wont make that mistake twice...
turns out the rear soft lines are bad...so both rear wheels held the pressure the more i pushed, the tighter it got. the 15 minute drive was 90% nonstop...so i didnt catch it till we hit town....
drove it home (highway, so minimal stops the whole way back to edmonds) and stopped at the original owners home, but she is currently in philly (out of town) so i talked with her son for a bit, and show his family the car (they live next door)
he said "Do you have a minute? i have something from the car inside..."
let me think...YES! ill wait as long as youd like!
so off he went, and a few minutes later...got some REALLY cool paperwork from him! im working on scanning them but for now i took pictures.... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

so the Jugolinija paper is a receipt for shipping the car and two people over to Yugoslavia from alabama. they drove it all the way down there to ship it across!
the back page with signature:
the VW paperwork:
based on this, they traded in a 68 squareback for the 71! how cool is that!!!
they also paid about half down and did car payments each month. . . 65.24 a month! i wouldnt mind that price for a brand new VW squareback if i could get one today!
the service history booklet:
so based on what i read here, Mike Spaso was the original purchaser, and Cheryl was his wife/girlfriend at the time (shes on the shipping receipt). ill ask plenty more questions to clear the air on this
also got this cool book!
and this one...i was needing a new copy!

Got a little bit of driving in
talked with jason, Notchboy, and figured out i had the timing way off....got that remedied and the thing drives MUCH better
here a pic of that plate frame:
got the squareback pressure washed underneath as best i could (need to get it on some tall jack stands and clean some more...) then got it on the lift and took some pics:
CV joint boots need replacement...
found this bad boy nice n bare and super brittle...gonna have to patch that up at some point. no issues yet, but im sure it isnt gonna help me.
randomly put my hand through this hole in the door panel on the drivers door:
and found all of this:
thats right. IN the door.... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

drove it to the fall fling in issiquah on sunday
camped in the back saturday night, since i had planned on camping in my bus and was surprised to get it running so soon.
was so busy trying to avoid miata and kia owners at the show i never bothered to get any other pics during the actual show...
cruised home for a short while with a couple twins of my bus...this is Zelten and DaleNW from the bay forum
got home and promptly started helping my parents empty their storage unit out...used the bus and the squareback!
that sucker holds a LOT
got at least 4 "thats like IKEA!" comments while loading it up.... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

had my first issue pop up...then my second.
the first, i changed the oil and apparently (according to reciepts) went from straight 30w oil to 5w-30. not at startup the light flickers for a sec before going oil for the rest of the trip. not a huge deal...but i will definately be using straight 30w from now on....wasnt doing that before and i will definately considor switching my bus over as well, as it does the same thing.
then, today on the way home...a block from home i hear a buzzing noise from under the back seat area. i saw the GEN light turn on and assumed the fan belt had busted and was buzzing and making noise. stopped and checked...NOPE! belts fine. i think the voltage regulator decided to start buzzing for some reason...and it looked to be brand new....
havent had any issues thus far, and my volt meter is in cali at the moment with dad (whos working on bringing a 1976 triumph TR7 back up in the next week or so from not running in southern cal, so he has some of my tools) so i cant check the charging rate today, but will soon.
any thoughts? _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
