UPDATED: Nov 23rd 2013
For some motivation, take a look at our 2013 trip recap:
Trip recap 2013
East Coast Visiting West
The plan is to leave Montreal on July 1st, head south to New York area and join up with a few brave members and drive to California for the Big Bear Bash event and the 50th anniversary of the Meyers Manx.
France has been working hard on a route option. We are looking at leaving Allentown, PA on Wednesday July 2nd and arrive in San Diego on Wednesday July 8th. We’ve tried to keep each segment under the dreaded 500 mile mark but unfortunately in some cases it’s simply not possible. We’ve purposely stayed on the northern route as much as possible to avoid the summer heat.
The proposed route has us going to the top of Pikes Peak, the Million Dollar Highway and the Four Corners. We are looking at a total one way distance of 3,100 miles.
Day 1 = July 1st 2014
For the return trip, France and I are looking to take a southern route in an attempt to visit the most states possible. We can discuss the return options once we’ve ironed out the 1st part of the trip.
Updated proposed route:

Between Ohio and Colorado, I've driven that many times, use to live in Colorado Springs, the northern route sux big time, turnpike traffic and construction and, it sux, I tried it several times, heat or no heat, you may prefer the southern I70 route to Colorado. Not saying any route is perfect, but just my personal preference, I'm not joining you guys on that trip, just wanted to share my experience worth of .02

We welcome all input. I'm a little confused though, I realize the map is far from having fine details but the current route has us take I-70 for most of the way. We've traveled I-80, I-70 and I-40 as well as many roads in between and enjoyed I-70 the most (I think).
Keep them updates/suggestions coming.
Thanks. |

My bad, you guys are calling I70 the northern route, forgot, your heading to CA. |
No worries, I did refer to I-70 as Northern route as opposed to I-40. |

I am considering doing the same trip from South Carolina but on the 20/10 southern route.
It will be slow going for me (40 HP engine)...so maybe a little longer day drives or more days for the trip.
Anyone in the SE interested?

Wow Chris! That's hard core in a 40 HP Monocoque Manx with no top.
I would consider up-grading the Manxter, install a rear hitch and tow bar the Monocoque.
wvbowtieman and I were just discussing this topic this morning for a couple of hours. We may build either his Moss Green Manx or my Puzzle Manx for this trip. Talked about seats, tops, engines, wheels/tires, trans combo's, storage room, windshield wipers and washers and more. Most likely make our drop dead decision by December 1, 2013 to be able to completely build a nice Manx for the trip. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Chris - that could be one long & hot (115 deg F+) trip. We did that in 2007. Once you get past Texas, it gets really hot. I would consider towing the car. Tom _________________ Manxter #16, 1968 Meyers Manx & Kick-Out SS #16 (WIP)

Chris, I am planning to go. I live in Richmond, VA and a south, mid, or north route, is still a long trip. As I have said, I have been across 6 times this year, in a Lexus. I would say I 40 is the best way for you. I10 is HOT in July. If you want someone to go along with you, I could work it out with you and maybe Joe would tag along. I had thought of cutting across I 64 and meeting up in St. Louis, but would change that for a "Southern Group". I was planning to flat tow my Manx. I may use a trailer. Which ever, you need someone to "Sweep" with you. I may even build a new one, while in the West. If so, I would make the run with you, as long as I am back on the East coast then. I was at Big Bear in 2013. Sounds like fun times. If it wasn't for being in Vince's (SurfNC) prime time, I'm sure he would love to go. _________________ I'd rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late. (Mine)

Yes...Fools plans. I have done the trip a number of years ago in June, July and November. To your point, it would be pretty hot. NOvember brought snow storms and white out conditions.
I can do either MOTB or the BB run. It has been a LONG time since being in CA..almost 13 years. I think this might be the time.
I thought about redoing the manxter to tow but not sure that it could do it without a catastrophic failure as the 1835 in the manxter is having compression issues and likely needs a tear down and rebuild. Although I am an advocate of flat towing cars I would be a bit hesitant to flat tow the monocoque that far this time around. likely would put it on a buggy trailer.
It looks like my wife and son will be visiting her family in Sweden from late June through July so I will be doing this trip solo. |

I have a trailer hitch on my Lexus. If you want to go together and trailer tow the Mono, we should be able to work that out. My wife would never ride that far, unless in a plane. So I would be doing it solo, also. Maybe we could get a group together and make a trip, similar to the Sea to Sea, Bass Backwards, from the southeast. _________________ I'd rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late. (Mine)

I like the sound of the "Roy and Chris duo"! As you can expect, France will try to convince you guys to drive rather than tow the monocoque but it's still a commitment either way!
For the return trip we had planned to it the I40 and I20 (in an effort to travel to as many States as we can). Perhaps that may be more fitting to follow us on the return? In any case, the buggy community would (will?) benefit greatly from having the presence of the monocoque and the both of you! |

Cool! Allentown is only about 45 minutes to an hour from me. I'll have to monitor the thread to see where you guys are... might just have to drive up and treat ya'll to dinner and anything you might need for the next leg! |

That's fantastic Joe! Just don't under-estimate the time it'll take you to get the cars ready though. Keep us posted if you need any motivation! lol |

Thanks Vincent!
In the past for MOTB, time was my enemy. Right now, I am off work, so, to quote the Stones, Time is on My Side. I draw a lot of motivation from John and Keith, who did a bucket list item. I am only getting older, and I have never done a real bucket list item, so this may be one for me.
And, Darlene just told me to Do It. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Sounds like Big Bear is going to have more buggies than ever this year! With the route coming through St Louis, we are going to plan on giving it a go.
Gotta get on that punch list and get Kermit long distance worthy! _________________ Or you can call me………Tim
