Today we left Bethlehem around 7:30 under sunny skies. It was relatively humid and it was 26C (79F). Everything went well on the road. WE had a contest to find out who would sleep 1st… We think Evan won but I followed closely… Oh yes, we were both passengers, not too stressful…
We went through many tunnels and a few hills. There were a few clouds before lunch and the temperature was a little cooler. After lunch, the sun was more present and we arrived at our hotel around 4:00pm.

Soon after our arrival, Joseph Wheeler and David Cash arrived. We all went to Olive Garden for dinner (The mrs was happy). As we were about to leave the restaurant (we had walked to), we had to wait for the rain to pass.
The guys stayed in the parking lot and Joseph took the opportunity to make a few adjustments… The 3 other guys were “supervising”. They decided to go fuel up for tomorrow AM, when they returned, it was pouring rain. From my room window, I noticed that Tom and Kathleen had arrived, we will be 4 buggies leaving tomorrow!

Beers consumed: 2 x Moretti
Distance: 711KM (442 milles)
States: PA, WV, OH
Temp Min: 22C (72F)
Temp Max: 38C (100F)

Tomorrow’s destination: St-Louis, MO. Remember to follow us live using the following link: http://debrouillard.ca/findmespot/ecvw2014livefeed.asp
We should activate the camera 4 times again tomorrow: 8:00, 10:00, 13:00 and 15:00.
Good night

Wow, what a day. We left the hotel at 7:30 this morning. The weather was uncertain but we left without the roof. I wore my jacket as it was on the cold side (18C / 64F). Kathleen and Tom were following the convoy with their buggy behind their minivan. Tom wants to check the motor and make sure they can use it at Big Bear.
Sadly, for Evan and Paul, it was raining a little this morning and the top of their buggy does not have side curtains. This is why I won the “first to fall asleep” contest. Evan was getting wet and it gave me the advantage!
Just before lunch, we joined up with Chris Lewis and he’ll be with us for the rest of the trip with the monocoque #7 of only 14 made. This car is a real collectible and it’s really nice… I’m talking about the car here, don’t worry Vincent.
Before entering Missouri, we met up with Barb and Tim and they led us safely into the city.
Our hotel is right next to the "Gateway Arc". Just before dinner, we met up with our friends in the lobby to give them our gift for the 4th of July (a little early). We even bribed the reception man… In Quebec, it qould have taken a brown envelop but here a pair of flashing glasses did the trick!
For dinner, we went to Joey B’s on the landing where we eat the best burgers in town. A few other local buggy guys joined us for dinner. Great fun!
Afterwards, we went for some icecream and join more buggy people. I made friends with a German grandmother who’s daughter’s daughter had just gotten married on the same date as us. I gave her an extra pair of flashing glasses and she was really happy. We may see them tomorrow morning. Great people!

Oh boy! Wonderful day today with a lot of things to recap. We left the hotel around 7:00am to go to the Queen East Casino to meet other dune buggies from the region. Tim got the permission to park the buggies on the grass at the Malcom Martin Park, to have in the background the Gateway Arch. The security guy of the Park, Mike was really nice with us. He was also able to start the Gateway Geyser....really impressive. We will not say thank enough to you Tim and Mike. We can guarantee you that we will talk again of this in many years.

The local people followed us up to Columbia. It was really cool to see all these buggies. The weather was perfect....we could not ask for better. When we arrived in Kansas, I can tell you that what Dorothy in the Wazard of Oz was right....lot of wind in Kansas. The wind was coming from Vincent's side so everything was going well for me.

We stopped for a good 45 minutes on the side of the road to help Tim who got problem with his dune buggy. The problem was the fuel pump....Vincent would be reay to help him but it was not located like the Canadian fuel pump. When the fuel pump was replaced, everything went well.

We arrived at the hotel around 7:30pm....really long day but we really enjoyed it.

When we came back from the restaurant, the local people from here (Hays), were lighting fireworks to celebrate the 4th of July...really cool.

So it is now time to go to bed, destination tomorrow, Golden CO. Little gift tomorrow because we are leaving only at 9:00am...yahoo!

P.S. Thanks to Kathleen and the Boston-Mabin's girls for the pictures

We must be blessed by the gods because we got another beautiful day for the wonderful gang of ECVW 2014. This morning, Barb and Tim offered us gifts, the new testament to protect us on the road and a dune buggy in the image of Spiderman...very nice of them.

This morning we left Hays around 9:00am under a cloudy sky. However, more we were driving west, more the sky was clearing and the heat was going up. The road was quite straight but beautiful and we kept climbing in altitude (we finished the day at more than 5,600 feet). The day was shorter than yesterday and it was perfect like this. We arrived at the hotel around 3:15pm. I took the opportunity to do laundry and take out the clothes for tomorrow, transfer the pictures and videos and start the recap. During that time, Paul, Brittany, Joe, David and Vincent went to visited the Coors company. Like you can see on one of the picture, it seems that they had fun there.

After that, we went for dinner at the restaurant Yard House, the food was really good.

Distance: 347 miles (558KM)
Temp Min: 79F (26C)
Temp Max: 104F (40C)
States: KA, CO
Beers: Coors,Left Hand 400 Lb Monkey, Odell Myrcenary.

Tomorrow we are staying in Colorado (but another city, Manitou Spring) and we will climb to the summit of Mount Evans, the highest paved road in North America. We are all excited.

The day started a little funny today… As I turned the corner to go down the stairs, a man was laying in front of the elevators and knocking on the door. You can guess that I did not stay long. Once I got outside, two of his friends were there laying on a luggage cart, with quite a few empty beer bottles and cigarette butches. They were trying to interview people with a corn cob. We think they had been partying since the 4th of July.

We left the hotel around 8:00 to drive up Mt.Evans. The sun was beautiful and the sky was blue. The drive up was fantastic, blue skies, sun, deers, and mountain goats. Everyone made it to the summit safely. Vincent and I noticed that there was more snow than last year. We stayed there for a short while. Many people came to talk to us and asked us questions, took pictures of the buggies – Very interesting. Tom thought he may have had a problem with his brakes and was afraid of not being able to descend. In the end, he had no problems making the way down.

Once we got back down, the weather was uncertain… We decided to put up the top. For lunch we stopped in Idaho Springs. After that, we headed to Manitou Springs. We received a few drops of rain but no more. With the top and the sun shining, I can confirm that it was very hot.

When we stopped for lunch, I was shocked to see that my friends, the Boston-Mabin family, had a Flyers blanket. I almost had a heart attack. I’ll have to mail them a Montreal Canadian one.

We arrived at the hotel around 3:30. A small group went to visit “The Garden of the Gods”. Vincent took the opportunity to do an oil change and I sorted the pictures.

For dinner, Bill Loftin and 2 of his friends joined us at the Mason Jar Restaurant… An enjoyable dinner. Vincent and I are very proud of our friends for having been able to climb Mt.Evans. Good Job gang!

Tomorrow we head up Pikes Peak… Hoping that the weather cooperates.

Oh yes, another wonderful day with all our friends. The sun was there this morning when we woke up. Our deer friend who wished us welcome yesterday, came to say goodbye to us this morning. Bill Loftin also came to say hello to us this morning before we left for Pikes Peak. Just before hitting the road, we went across the hotel to take picture in front of the car museum.

Even if Vincent and I already gone to Pikes Peak, we decided to follow the GPS. We passed in front on the sign indicating Pikes Peak but our GPS told us to continue. We said: "It might have second entrance". On the road, we stopped because Kathleen found that her buggy didn't have any power. The guys are really equiped for that kind of situation. Within few seconds, the problem was solved and the other people took the opportunity to also adjust their dune buggy (ajusting timing advance) before we hit the road again. While I was taking pictures of the group, Vincent missed a turn. We did a u-turn to come back on our way. Oh surprise, the turn that we were supposed to take, well it was a non pavement road and also, it was closed. So we sent back on our way to go to the entrance that we saw 14 miles ago.

Joseph and David decided to climb Pikes Peak faster so they left before us. Like the day before, all the buggies were following each other. The sky was wonderful and I would say that it was warmer than Mount Evans. Hats off to Stephanie who drove the Durango in these twisty roads.

At the summit, we took really nice pictures. By popular demand, here is the name of the people with their buggy to help you.

On our way down, everything went well, we all passed the brakes inspection at the half-way point. For lunch, we stopped at the Crystola Road House...burgers at 3.99$ really delicious. Unfortunately, it is at that time that the rain started and stayed with us almost until we arrived at the hotel at Gunnison.

For dinner people ordered pizza. I decided to pass my turn because eating pizza around 9:00pm and go to bed just after....my stomac might not really like that.

Tomorrow, destination Page in Arizona, by going via the Million Dollar Highway and the Four Corner.

Just checked your tracker at 11:00am PDT. Looks like you are almost out to I-15. I'm sure time is s consideration on your route planning, but its too bad you didn't take the southern loop out of Page thru Lee's Ferry and Jacob Lake near the entrance to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. That way would have got you out of the hot hot sun ( there are trees up on the Kaibab Plateau) but probably would have cost you an extra hour of travel time. The route North out of Kanab would have taken you thru Zion Natl Park, but that also would have taken more time than you probably have.

At least you got to drive thru that booming tourist attraction of the Twin Cities of Polygamy, Hilldale/Colorado City!

Stay safe and cool, my friends.

Day 8 Gunnison CO -- Page AZ

Yesterday was a long day with a lot to talk about. We left the hotel around 7:00 with the sun but on the cool side (9C or 48F). We drove on the Million Dollar Highway, it was fantastic. We were not too disciplined when we stooped for gas... We were spending too much time, we'll try to improve today.

We stopped for a picture at the Four Corners monument, we took a picture of the New Mexico sign. We were the attraction of the place, everyone stopping to take pictures.

Here starts the adventure, the skies were menacing... But it was too hot to put the top. We received a first cloud of rain but we did not get too wet. Soon after we received hail accompanied with lightning and thunder. I can confirm the hail pellets are pretty hard when you get them on your head (but our heads are pretty herd too Wink. It rained hard and we had crazy drivers passing us on the left with near zero visibility.

We arrived at the hotel around 7:15pm (we gained one hour). We were thinking to order Chinese food and eat it at the hotel to celebrate Joe's birthday. Vincent ordered the food over the phone (for 17 people) and went with Paul to get it. When they arrived at the restaurant, the guys were freaking a little but when they saw the quantity of food, it was not fitting in the dune, so they called Stephanie to come with the Durango. The invoice was 800$. Then the guys said: it didn't make sense. George, the guy from the restaurant didn't understand 17 but 70 people. Paul and Vincent tried to negotiated with him, without any luck. In the meantime, Stephanie called the police and they told her that we were in our rights to leave without the food. George "contacted" the police as well, but not too bright, he passed the phone to Paul who press redial and he didn't contacted the police. Stephanie and Vincent left and Paul tried again to negotiated, still no luck. The police came to the hotel, Paul spoke with him and we were okay to leave without paying anything and didn't bring food.

Today we leave for Oceanside, CA and should eat with Winnie and Bruce... Another long day but we will be in California, cool!

P.S. Happy B-Day to aunt Gilberte.

We left the hotel around 7:15 this morning, we had a long day ahead of us. The sun was and it was 26C (79F). Shortly after we left, Barb and Tim had to stop to tighten a wheel bearing. We continued on and we tracked their catch up with Life360 on our phone. They caught up to us at the 1st fuel stop. As we crossed Las Vegas, the skies got cloudy and it rained a little. Shortly after lunch, we stopped in front of the welcome to California sign. Congratulations to all, we’re very proud of you.
When we crossed Death Valley it was 43C (110F). Kathleen and Tom left us near the end our day as they were not staying at the same hotel. We were supposed to meet Winnie and Bruce for diner at Jolly Roger in Oceanside but we stopped in Dana Point. We contacted Winnie and realized our mistake. We were only 30 minutes away.
We had a great time seeing Winnie and Bruce and their family again. Sue, Bud, Roy, Bruce, LaVern were also at the restaurant. During diner, our Life360 app reported that Kathleen and Tom had problems with their Dune Buggy, the clutch gave up. They had to tow it behind the mini van.
A short time after, Tom reported that they had Chris’ luggage in their van… Oups… Chris will have to wait ‘till tomorrow for luggage.
Tomorrow, destination Winnie and Bruce and then up to Big Bear
