What year are these seats?
I got some seats that fit my '69 bus with the headrests.
I want to order cushions and covers from Sewfine and want to be absolutely certain I get the right year.

Thanks BusDaddy.
I plan to buy foam and covers from SewFine.
They offer 1968-73 and 74-76.
Do you know which I would need for these seats by chance?
Is it 74-76 because of the head rests? _________________ 1967 Beetle, 1971 Bay Window Westy, 1972 Super Beetle, 1970 Drag Beetle, 1976 Porsche 912E

I did some research into this, too, for a '73 that I was reupholstering using Sewfine. The end product is here:
My '73 had headrests, and was bus #9 off the line, so we know that at the start of 1973 production year, headrests were at least offered.
Given the knob under the seat, that dates it through 1974, since the seats changed in 1975 (one year only) to start looking more like 1976 seats.
So, what you have there are 1973/74 seats, like the ones in the photo. _________________ John

John:
Thank you.
So , when you ordered from sewfine did you order '68-'73 or '74-'76?
What color and what fabrics did you order?
Your color combination looks about perfect for our bus. _________________ 1967 Beetle, 1971 Bay Window Westy, 1972 Super Beetle, 1970 Drag Beetle, 1976 Porsche 912E

Looking at catalogs and websites I am leaning toward ordering '74 seat covers. Does this seem correct? _________________ 1967 Beetle, 1971 Bay Window Westy, 1972 Super Beetle, 1970 Drag Beetle, 1976 Porsche 912E

Those are not Westfalia seats so whatever you base your decision on lean it towards a stationwagon or Kombi, 74 Westfalia camper only seats are very different from bus seats yet 73 camper seats look like that. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Westy vs. Transporter seats?
Now I am even more confused!
Sew fine has two options and they make no mention of westy vs. Transporter. _________________ 1967 Beetle, 1971 Bay Window Westy, 1972 Super Beetle, 1970 Drag Beetle, 1976 Porsche 912E

Madmike....No returns allowed at sewfine, it is all custom work.
And, sew fine would not help me figure out which to order.
Once I get them done you are more than welcome to try them out! _________________ 1967 Beetle, 1971 Bay Window Westy, 1972 Super Beetle, 1970 Drag Beetle, 1976 Porsche 912E

Contacted Sew Fine today again.
We have a new solution.
I am going to remove the covers from the seats I plan to use. I will send them the covers so they can match them to their patterns and make me the proper size covers. So far I am really impressed with Sew Fine customer service! Got the samples in the mail today to help me choose material and colors. And, their Black Friday sale runs 11/22 through 11/29.... _________________ 1967 Beetle, 1971 Bay Window Westy, 1972 Super Beetle, 1970 Drag Beetle, 1976 Porsche 912E

Hi
Would I be correct to surmise.
68-72-VW seats all the same. Low back.
68-74-Recline knob on lower drivers seat.
68-76-Seat tracks the same.
73-Some VW seats had headrest and some did not.
75-One year only.
73-76-Received this headrest.
77-79-Received this headrest.
Thanks in advance! |

The original 1973 headrests have a release button on them. [very rare to find them] 74-79 are slide-ins. 73-75 are soft vinyl with a zipper on the bottom, that self-destructs. 76-79 are molded vinyl.
Here is one the posts of a 73 only:
Here are both:
And the 74-79 posts:

your summury makes no sense
its kind of right but your dates are off
68-69 has knob for adjusting (driver seat)
68-71 no holes for head rest (driver and pass)
72-up have holes for headrest
75-76 have more shape to them (not so box looking)
75 pass seat still has box looking bottom part and does not have seat tracks
76 pass seat is identical to 75-76 driver seat and uses tracks
this is where all the confusion comes to play
the 75 pass seat is not exactly the same as a driver seat
the bottom part still installs in a non adjustable position like all 68-74 seats
but the back support has the same contour as 76-79 seats
76-79 seats are all the same
except that 76 seats have
different style track
head rest are 72-75 and 76-79
72-75 have covers 76-79 are solid _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

My '72 Deluxe front bench OG seats had no holes for headrest?? Was it not an option for 1/3-2/3 bench seat? |

Sorry that I did not see this thread again until now.
Head rests were not an option until 1973, I am pretty sure.
The seat rails changed in mid-1976. I had an early '76 Westy with the old style rails, and have heard of late-76 buses with the later style rails. There must be a chassis number at the change, but I do not know what it is.
To the OP: I have just gone through this with Sewfine again. Those seats that you have pics of have the squarish look to them, identifying them as 1973 style backs. There was a slight change to the bucket style backs (less square) in 1974, I think.
The ones in my '73 bus above are '73, with the squarish backs.
Colors... I'd have to look that up, but I just had another set made for my '75 pickup, with 1/3 2/3 seats, in the same color scheme. I had to replace the driver's side '75 seat, and that was damned HARD TO FIND. Thank you, Way Out Salvage (on a tip from Sewfine).
If you ask Carol at Sewfine, tell her you want the scheme that she just did for J Tauxe from New Mexico.
I will say that the piping may not be an exact match to the vinyl, but it still all looks good. _________________ John
