This morning on my way to school, I stopped at a stop sign, put the car in first and let off the clutch when POP! I thought it just popped out of gear but when I put it back in gear the car wouldn't move but I heard a kind of metal spinning noise and each gear would spin faster and faster. I'm hoping that the shift link coupler got disconnected or something happened there rather than the transmission. Is that probable? I'll update when I get home and can actually look at the coupler/shift rod and tranny.

Could also be a stripped spline in the drum. Just one drum being stripped out means "no go".

i'd put the rear up on jack stands and put it in gear to see if the driveline spins. Will tell you where your problem is.

Or just remove the rear hubcaps and look at each axle as some one pretends to drive it. Tthat will tell you about the hub splines.

If you look under it at the half shafts (going from the transaxle to the rear wheels) you should be able to see a CV joint that is just spinning.

Yep CV joint is spinning took off the hub caps and didn't see anything but I could hear the joint spinning so I looked under and sure enough it's spinning. So what's the real issue why is it spinning? Could I fix it myself or would it be better to take it to the shop? Thanks y'all

wait so the axle and CV are spinning, but you don't see the nut spinning when you take the hub cap off? Take the nut and drum off then take a picture. Could be a broken stub.

Sounds like the CV joint bolts are toast.

You need to repack all 4 of them since they need to be done about every 30K miles.

Buy 4 of these...

And make sure you own this...

Sounds like he has a broken cage inside the inner CV joint, the joint spins and the axle doesn't. As simple as replacing the joint or the whole axle. The new axle gets you new joints with new boots.

Take the entire axle assembly off and asses the damage.
