A would have a little problem with the extra screws in the body. Rust is a devil. Maybe u could fix it in some way to the original fixing points.
Edit: sorry, was reading ur other awnser after writing this. |

I'd be interested in a full set for an 87 Vanagon, whether I have to bend a bit to fit or not.
Thanks |

A beautiful design and application, but I'm curious to see the actual performance figures.
As was explained to me by a mechanic who worked on the Vanagon assembly line, the vent design was engineered to draw air OUT of the engine compartment by the wind blowing over the "gills". Pushing air INTO the engine bay is a different approach.
No criticism - that mod piece is a work of art. |
Any more discussion on this? I would also think the air would be meant to flow in, especially with syncros etc. having factory snorkels...does Corwyn's point mean that air would be flowing out of the snorkels rather than in? _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

Corwyn's mechanic was just wrong. Use the search a little and you can even find manometer readings at the scoop area and inside the engine compartment. It is irrefutable that when driving at any speed the air flows down the D-pillars and into the engine compartment. |

Oh yeah. And if you prop the license plate door open you'll see a meaningful drop in engine temps at highway speeds. I was only using hacked up cardboard for the scoop extenders but they were mighty effective. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

With the added heat in the engine bay due to the turbo, I had been contemplating spacing the license plate out a half inch or so. Seems like a good way to get some more heat out. Haven't tried it yet though. _________________ Tim Potts

My 89 GL 2WD has a "snorkel" on the passenger side.
Don't all 2.1s have an air intake "snorkel" leading to the air cleaner from the vent area?
One more vote for supplying air.. not for drawing air out.. Otherwise you'd be limiting the air intake to the AFM/EFI, as well? _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

You could also take a chassis punch and put a few holes in the rear valance. Fit some black grommets and they might look almost factory! _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

I put a slit 2 inch piece of 5/8 hose over the top of the licence plate clip where it closes so the door stays open on the top and sides because my temps were always a bit on the high side....it made zero difference. My advice....don't butcher your van with unecessary holes. |

Production is happening, I'm spending hours welding up left and right dies in 1/4" plate so I can bang out a dozen pairs,
Also, have improved the screen fitting and the attachments,The scoop will use the stock anchors.2 screws at the top
You'll need some of these...or similar
soon..I want this to be good for everyone
thanks for your patience
As an aside, today running around for a couple of hours in stop and go traffic,
I could watch my IAT's go down 20F every time I got 30mph+
ambient was 96F..30+mph 101F to 110F ..182/190F coolant
sitting at idle (traffic light) 126F..188/197F coolant
freeway temps were lower...cruising(no boost)
Scoop does work |

Thanks for ur efforts. Having tried this I can personally attest that fabrication a metal scoop is a lot of work. Thanks much for taking this on for the benefit of the community cause you certainly don't make money doing these small run custom projects! _________________ VW LT40 build. I do love my Zetec conversion, but have to admit that the extra heat it generates under the engine cover (from the exhaust manifold looping up before it goes down, something I wish Jim would look into changing with a custom manifold)((but that's another thread!)) is a bit of a bother.
Sometimes on long hot hill climbs I'll pull over and open the license plate lid with a bungee cord to let some heat escape. I've even thought about changing the license plate lid to a steel mesh and mounting the plate elsewhere to allow more heat to escape the engine compartment.
I'm thinking that with these scoops and Bostigs new air box setup the engine compartment will stay much cooler and other mods won't be necessary. (although a custom manifold would still be nice Jim )
Keep up the great work goffoz! _________________ Currently:
