After thinking how and where I wanted to mount things back in the engine bay I came up with this. It will serve as a cage for the back 'seat' area and also a platform to mount things like my fuel pump, filter, and electrical boxes. Zip-strip or bolt with fender washer thru the expanded metal and it's mounted. Ta-da!
I'm getting so many ideas of things to do and I'm having to think long and hard about them since room is getting tight. Things I was planning on using aren't going to fit like I had hoped and I'm having to rethink a lot of things so slow progress.
I really want to feel this thing move soon but it'll get done when it's done.
I will also need to make a deck around and in front of the fuel tank along with some bars behind the seats to attach the harness straps and a homemade 'glovebox' somehow between the air bags in the deck. Biggest issue right now is space and not making things too cobbled up looking. Unfortunately this is not a simple lightweight sand rail build. I think I woulda been done a month ago in that case.

Thanks for the good words.
I fabbed an aluminum box to store my computer in and keep it out of the elements. I'm a little concerned about it getting hot but I'm hoping the tight fitting case will help sink heat away. Just have to get time for some wiring. Unfortunately today is Easter. lol _________________ Brian H.

Good news! I'm adding to my stable another VW. This one will stay VW too btw. hehe It's going to replace my daily driver. Finally getting my baja back!
It's all there too. A little bit'o rust to repair and some ball joints and brakes to bleed but this thing has a lot of things people end up adding down the road like adjusters on the front beam, dual carbs, oil filter on the pump, and harnesses in the back seat. Just wish I hadn't sold the roll cage from Orangecrusher now.

should be picking it up this saturday. I'm going to pick it up on my 2-place motorcycle trailer and haul it back 2.5 hr away. Trailer is just big enough I think so I will be adding some anchor points to it this week and maybe a little more deck legnth out over the tongue.
Anyone tell me off the top of their heads how long their beetle is? _________________ Brian H.

I would suggest running say an electric fan on the box(one for an oil cooler would work well) then make an inlet and outlet tube with an air filter that could run under one of the seats, ill see if i can draw something up on paint on my lunch break haha or maybe get fancy with some solid works depending on how much time i have what are the dimensions of the box? |

Looking great! I really like the roof tins, but wonder if they interfere with storage and the spare tire mount? _________________ rant _ classified ads with out pics are almost worthless |

Man it's been since April since I touched her?!
I'm thinking if I carry a spare it might be alongside the front on top of the nerd bars I want to make. I want to keep as much weight low as possible. Maybe jerry can on other side. _________________ Brian H.

that sounds like a good idea and may give you a bit of weight up front which would be good. _________________ rant _ classified ads with out pics are almost worthless |

At the end of the night last night I finally got my mind into starting back into my woods buggy.
I left off running wires for the engine management system. I had made a box for the computer and found a spot to mount it. So I started soldering wires together last night. Got to the harness for the ignition plate and found that the plug has a different number, set of colors and arrangement of wires than what my schematic I'm using for the conversion has.
stupid speed bumps
So I gotta do some research and find out what's going on with that. _________________ Brian H.

Pumped to see you back on this buggy! Your patience and attention to detail have been my ispiration as I collect parts for my rail and manx. And your posts about the side shift 091 I have read a few times. That fuel tank is killer. |

Thanks for the kind words. I'm figuring this stuff out as I go. If there's one thing I hope people take away from my build it's that you don't have to do everything the same way everyone else does.
I'm just about done with wiring the computer. The crazy part about doing a quad 4 engine management system is it's best to scrap the obd2 system I had in favor of the obd1 used on 89-92 quad4's. That means figuring which parts don't work together. I've had some help from the good folks at the humble quad4forums.
I still have to find some radiator hoses that work for my arrangement. Then work on fabbing my exhaust. Then the motors gotta come back out because I found out I've got the wrong pressure plate on my clutch.
Then I should be close to firing it up! _________________ Brian H.

Good to see you are back on it. My yellow buggy has been being used this summer and it has done great. Keep at it.
