I showed up in 2009 at the Classic in Irvine. My car and another bug built by Jer Fab were both clear coated over Patina.
Can anyone lay claim to doing it before 2009? |

I drove "patina" cars all through the 80s 'cause I couldn't afford a paint job. Personally I can't wait for the whole patina thing to die as it is in the rest of the automotive world.

Northern California gets pretty wet, Im sure those residents use some sort of protectant.
No need for clear coat for Nevada residents. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

If you want crazy shiny you do. Im still interested in knowing, everything ive read about clear, is that moisture can pass through, keeping the paint under from "dying" BUT thats what the inet says, so truth? |

I'll disagree. Clear coat isn't porous like primer is, therefore moisture will not pass through it.
IMO, shiny cleared patina looks bad. If I were one to want to keep the faded paint look on my car I'd use a flattened clear. _________________ 1956 Rag W/ Semaphores |

...funny how we are all so different as all through the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s i alyays painted my VWs because i was so up tight...they had to look presentable. Now that i am much older and have patina myself, i appreciate a car that is reflecting the same.
...anyone can paint a car to look pretty, but few can duplicate what Father Time does to a vintage VW or a vintage human. Personally, my appreciation has matured because i have come to appreciate whatever you appreciate about your own car.

I read your post at least three times before I realized that how often I may post, or how new I am to the samba have nothing to do with the fact that a lot of people like and love patina, and it may go out of style in several years, but right its hot.
still confused as to the seven year comment being relavant!!! |

patina doesn't necessarily equal rust ... for my ghia I've kept the original paint as its almost like artwork! It tells so much about the cars story... I'm lucky it was a dry car but it did have a couple patches of rust and for those the paint has been stripped, rust repaired and painted.
I haven't clear coated it but will probably do so down the track to preserve it. I haven't seen that many clear coated original paint cars so can't really say how it holds up. There is one here that has been anchor waxed prob older than 2009 and the bus is still holding up well and doesn't seem to have any progression rust wise. Our weather is very kind to veedubs though. _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver

What do u want? A cookie? A "patina originator" award? What's the point? Oh and it's not patina, patina is what you see on things like the Statue of Liberty. What we get on our bugs is just rust. Try to fancy it up all you like. Ok my hating is done for the day. Lol. _________________ my first bug 66' build:

I agree with you. I always considered patina when copper turns green from oxygen. Still though, I have embraced the term for what it is. Here's is the definition off the interwebs for fun:
pa·ti·na
pəˈtēnə/
noun
noun: patina; plural noun: patinas
1.
a green or brown film on the surface of bronze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period. _________________ Shadetree Westy

Patina says to most people...."I can't afford a paint job." It makes a car looks old and cheap and unloved IMO. I know........It's only original once, but it's ugly as long as you want it to be. Fix the rust and paint the cars. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

I need to modify my last post.
Patina on an old Ferrari is way cool. Patina on an old VW is just cheap rust. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |
