Heads Up ....

Apparently software exists to scan the classifieds and generate a text message to your phone ....

Received a text message from 646-504-5289 this morning ....

" Hello ...What is the present condition? "

This was a text message to my cell phone number
on an ad in the Samba classifieds

This is the first time I have received a text message ....

I guess technology exists to scan the classifieds and detect a number - then generate a text message

A variation on the email scam approach but the phone number of the scammer is disclosed in the process

I guess it is worth it to get a disposable cell phone if you are a scammer .....

If we were charged for emails and texts then this problem would disappear.

Make it a very small amount, like a mil (1/10th of a cent) per message, and maybe allow 500 free per month. So we actual people would not even notice the tiny cost. But a scammer who sends out thousands an hour would pay dearly. The economics of trolling for the stupid would not pencil out.

FYI , you can set up a Google Voice account for free that gives you a new extra number that will ring on your phone and you can also send and receive text messages , this prevents spammers from having access to your real number and it doesn't effect your current service , they basically forward the calls to you ..

I know this is an issue with craigslist ads and has been for quite a while.

I had not heard of it happening from here so thanks for the notification.

But I wonder what google does with that information... they are not exactly pristine lately when it comes to privacy...

Reality check: There is no such thing as privacy anymore. Get used to it.

some possible solutions:
-don't put your phone number in the ad text and do not list it in your personal information. i know this would be difficult for the OP since he's always on the road and needs constant contact.

-break up your phone number into words and numbers, a la Craigslist (example: One Two Three - 4 5 6 -sEvEn EiGht 90)

-break your number into separate lines in the ad text. i'm not sure if this would work, it was just a thought. example:
123

456

7890

i think the main idea is to not make it a link that someone can search or that will come up as something you can simply press on and have it dial that number (like you can do on a smartphone).

I don't think this is a Samba member ....

I want to be clear about that

I think it is targeted computer scamming

The danger is, some folks might think they are being contacted
by a Samba member ....

I have an odd issue recently that could very well be Samba based.
I have received numerous text messages for items I have listed here on the Samba. The messages are coming through with a direct copy of the title of the ad. Area code 949.
I dont respond as no other questions are asked... just a title repeat.

Seems scammish to me. .. bump to the top Wink .
