I picked up a square many years ago. It sat unattended and alone in a field since 1980. I usually have a name for most of my projects and cars but haven't found a name for this car yet.
Some pictures of it when it was first towed out of the field before being returned for a few more years.

Fairly complete but definitely in need of some serious work.

After many years of sitting at the farm I finally brought it home. I started with the fuel system. Had the tank cleaned and new lines and fuel pump, new injector seals, injectors and all that. Under the hood was a ton of mouse houses and poop. Only picture I have left.

I then put brand new callipers, pads, rotors and lines, New wheel bearings and all that jazz. I also did a rear disc conversion and converted it to a Porsche bolt pattern.

Then I went to work on some of the interior. The rear deck was rusted bad. So out it came.

Before cutting the floor out I tried to fire the engine. I realized rather quickly that one of the heads was screwed up. Pulled the motor to replace the heads and do so cleanup.
But I have no pictures Of that.

At this point I decided that I won't be happy with a 1600cc engine. Work would be needed to fit something better in the future.

I have new window runners and have eliminated all the exterior and interior chrome.
The engine is being wired to run off a megasquirt.
I have lots of little touches to add to the car as I keep building it.

I need suggestions for center caps on the wheels, hiding a stereo and speakers and what will finish up the hatch floor nicely. I was thinking cherry hardwood or a street sign.

Great work so far. Your new headliner looks a lot smoother than my first attempt.

Why raise the floor above the engine? Planning a Subaru swap in the future? Which would be cool.

How's the auto trans working?

As to what to cover the raised floor with, depends upon the look you're going for. Since I'm a stock-appearance kinda guy, I'd try to fab a rubber mat similar to what was there originally. Or carpet the whole thing with the stuff I'm using on the floor.

The plan is to eventually get a suby back there. As far as the trans goes, I have no idea. I've never had the car run yet. I won't be satisfied until I can burn the tires off in with a nice burnout.

The auto trans, if in good condition, will work well with a stock or mild engine. With a Subaru engine, probably not well--if you can even find an adapter to mate the two. Actually, mating the auto trans to the Subaru engine would not be difficult. The challenge would be mating the VW torque converter to the Sub crank. And fabbing a proper kick-down linkage. And then hoping the auto can take the Sub's increased power.

They use the 003 automatic transmission in drag racing VW's, so I think they will handle lots of power.

Thanks, Mike. I learned something new. Bonus feature is if you can mate the AT to the Sub engine, you don't need to convert the pan to standard.

Mating the tranny to the subby is easy several companies make adapter kits. Remember this is a super common swap in vanagons.

Spent the last couple nights in the garage got alot of the wiring taken care. Replaced the fuse panel, got most of the lights working although the brake lights still don't work.

I've noticed on the shift (automatic) there is nothing for the reverse or start switch to contact. Does anyone have a picture of that area of the shifter so I can see what I am missing?

Otherwise its been coming together rather slowly. I hope to have it running for a car show we have in january.

did you check the brake switches when you had the brakes apart? or did you re-seal the master cylinder?

Mark I haven't even looked at the brake switch. I am thinking I didn't reconnect the wires on the switch, but haven't got the nose back in the air.

Intrinsic that file would be a great help, it would be a nice base map to start with. Thankyou!

Oh and 1 more thing. The bulbs in the fuel gauge are burnt out. No signal light is my main concern. But for the life of me I can't get the bulbs out. Any ideas on replacing them?

Here you go -- pay no attention to the loose wires in the pic, they were cut when I got the car. They are for the shift console illumination.

Here's a closer view of the relevant wiring, and the contact mounted to the shifter handle:

And the contacts. The right hand set are the starter contacts; the left hand set are for the reverse lights. The car will only start in neutral:

That is absolutly perfect! I am however missing the contact piece from the shifter. I guess I am going to have to track that down, or maybe fab something.

I saw this plastic block in the classifieds yesterday -- do you have one of these?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1518559

It's from a 73 and is made a little differently, so it might take some modification to fit on your car if you need one. It does have a third set of contacts so the car can be started in Park, though.

Maybe a WTB ad could find you a contact for the shifter handle.

I think I have a shifter for parts if you need some, and the block of the 73 ables you to start in park,
