|
|
Today I purchased 2 old Hazet storage/garage equipment:
A rare and old '52 Hazet 100 large cabinet (needs 'optical' restauration + a new key and removal of the DIY-locking mechanism ):
It started with an earlier post of GJ member Mac_Intosh of the second puchase: the table top toolbox that sat for 30 years in a garden! :eyecrazy:
It's a Hazet 152 ('76-). I also haven't seen actual pictures on the internet of this one before.
Condition: well, most rust was from the contents, the box is still pretty solid. I managed to open all 5 drawers eventually:
Well, it seems some serious restoration anyway

Well, I first have to figure out regarding the second one, how to unlock the drawers, otherwise I cannot do anything to the inside of the box properly.
Then it has to be decided if I use a chemical treatment for dissolving the rust or a mechanical methode (wire brush, sandblasting,,....)
Lemon juice is the best way to dissolve rust? I only know small bottle from the supermarket. Acidic acid I can buy per liter for household cleaning purposes, but that's still not so strong. Will any strong acid work? |

The Hazet 100 in the catalogue from '52:
By the way: this is the only real picture of Hazet 152 I have in pretty good condition. It was for sale in Germany not so long ago:
And this one is from the '76 catalogue:

I will be watching this with great interest, very cool.
btw the best way to clean up would be chemical paint stripper, or light soda blasting. as for the locks, you'll either need to 'pick' them or drill them out _________________ Collector of all things Volkswagen, Hazet and Matra.

No time to 'restore' but here's another addition to my Hazet garage equipment: Hazet 168N (early 90's)
I now have a:
-166N (regular Assistent)
-168N (closed drawer cart)
-100 (large wall box)
-152 (table top drawer box)

After the removal of stickers, ducktape and some good cleanup.. here are some better and more detailed photo's of the 168N:
The 4 drawers are accesible from both sides:
The bottom also has a big compartment:
Here's the locking mechanism right under the turning knob:
The open-position:
..and the closed positon:
And this is where the drawers are locked:
Next thing is to replace the sliders of 2 drawers because of some damaged and missing parts... overall condition is pretty good.
A bit of rust, but there's no need for a respray.
The bearings in the wheels are not so good anymore and the locking of the swivelling wheels isn't working anymore, but that's not a big deal.
By the way.. this 168 is a special one

Started the restoration of the '52 Hazet 100. After a good cleanup with a degreaser and removal of the chrome and the sticker on top of the wall box:
Because the key of the lock was missing I needed to disassemble the lock, to take it to a locksmith (and hope it's possible to make a new key for it):
The lock was out:
And this is what it looks like inside:
Then there was this moron that drilled 8 holes in the doors in the past... so that needed to be welded and grinded flat again (inside and outside):
Well, now I need to repaint the doors for sure :
....and my first pre-'65 item in the drawer

Brought the lock away for a new key and got some Hazet blue paint for the doors today.
By the way, I get few comments on the progress of the restoration. Maybe there's no interest for this here? |

I'm definetly interested in the restoration of the cabinet.
What color are you using to paint the cabinet?
I to have a lock missing on my 'pre '65 cabinet.
Can you provide any other information regarding the color and lock?
Thanks |

Hazet blue is no regular RAL color, so the best thing to do is to let it scan by a professional paint shop. The only problem is that you need a good sample of paint that isn't faded/dirty when it's old. I'll use the 90's Hazet blue because I'll probably only repaint the doors. The other parts are polished a bit but are still dirty so the blue is not as light as it originally was (like I discovered under the chrome trim).
Also check my color comparison here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7013344#7013344
The lock will be customised by a locksmith to create a new key. I keep the current original lock. No idea if it can still be purchased somewhere as a replacement part somewhere. Probably not. It's really old
Btw: @gunlau: I have no connection with VW, but like Hazet a lot and there just are quite some enthousiasts here also |

You did not have to disamble the lock that much, I have a key that you could have made a copy off. |

Not exactly because in the past they probably disarmed the lock inside when it got defected because most of the leaf springs that are connected to the lock blades (not sure what the exact name is) were missing. That concluded the locksmith. So the inner work of the lock is now customised to make it work again in some way. The key will be different then it originally was. Well, you can't have it all |

Latest buy (without contents though)
Any idea of a year? 80's? 90's?

Update:
The Hazet 100 is almost finished:
Plan was to repaint only the doors, but due to some difference in the color I decided to do the complete exterior.
I needed to mask the text "CHROM VANADIUM" and the Hazet logo:
And this is how it turned out (with the polished chrome trim and door handles) :
It's not like brand new, because I didn't remove the scratches and some dents, but from a distance you won't be able to see those.
Last thing is the disfunctioning lock + missing key (currently at the lock smith) and then I can attach it to my wall |

Thanks for the compliment. Makes it the effort worth putting those pics online.
Still have the biggest restoration to do.. the pretty rusted Hazet 152 (table top box). Wondering how that ends |
