Detail. If anyone can translate, that’d be great!

Cool, two stickers. How close in production date are the two westys?

Were they both Tourist delivery buses?

Thanks, I like that second one better now Smile

By the way, absolutely incredible job on the paint stripping, can you describe the complete method? I saw you used acetone, but how did you scrape off and remove the top coat? Steel wool, sandpaper, what? As for time, how can you price an original paint job? Now if we could just get original cellulose? laquer? paint.

Thanks. The top coat that had been applied to my bus was reactive to Acetone, while the factory paint wasn't. I used a spay/mist bottle to apply the acetone and either a 0000 steel wool pad or plastic razor blade to remove the paint. 90% of the time, the best bet was the plastic razor. Work from the top, down, so the runnoff works for you, loosening the paint. It takes practice, after doing anything as long as it took me, that happens Smile For detail areas, I'd saturate a wad of paper towels and clamp it to the area to loosen the paint.

Ah, like that better for the first one, too. Thanks!

Sure would be interested to know if anyone else has found embedded poems?
I probably won't get to it for a while, but I'm wondering what's behind the other cargo door Smile

Count down to Bulli! Still waiting on my paint. Supposedly it will be ready Wednesday. In the mean time there is plenty of work to do. The only area where there was previous bodywork was at the forward, lower cargo door hinge. Evidently it was smacked long ago. They probably did their best with the parts available at the time, but the bolt retainer was missing and they had through bolted the hinge into the fender well. The metal was stretched and cracked to the point were the best fix was to cut it out.

Other than that, I've been pushing out little dings and dents on the rear, finished prepping the popouts for paint, etc. Since I essentially only have this weekend and a couple of days next week before I need to leave for Bulli it won't be "finished"...more of a work in progress. Next up is to push/pull out the dents on the nose. If I can smooth that up reasonably, get the popouts installed, paint/install the bumpers, and paint the dogleg before Thursday of next week I'll be happy Smile There will still be a lot of other work that needs to be done, but I'm not going to rush it.

They didn't note any mix specs on the can, just labeling it "Custom Formula" Sad They matched it to the paint brushed onto the inner cargo door. I haven't had a chance to check it, yet, though. Trying to get the popouts painted today so they'll have plenty of time to dry before reassembly.

Thanks!

Is this true of all subhatch Westys?
I saw that the tent mounts on Greg's 56 were painted dove blue as well.

My mounts appear to have been painted silver, similar to earlier tent poles.

Also, are the bolts holding the mounts to the roof og?

Interesting. I don't know. Your bus is earlier, right? Maybe a change? Maybe someone with early Westy experience will chime in....

They don't appear to have ever been removed, and based on every thing else I've come across on this bus (other than engine), I'd be extremely surprised if they weren't og.

Popouts painted. I checked the PPG Seagull against the og paint and it's dead-on. Really happy!

The tent brackets on Jacks bus look all original to me. I think they are usually painted, but like anything Westfalia there are exceptions. The brackets on my blue '55 Campingbox are painted silver, but I am not convinced that bus has ever been to Weidenbruck. The back of that bus is not painted tan either. I have also seen some hardtop So-42s with unpainted brackets, can't recall a '58 like yours Doug, but I haven't been looking for that - maybe ask Lind what his '58 has.

A lot of paint shops will not get out that formula... they want people to come to them and buy the paint.. You have to ask them.. some give it up..

I will check my bus for the poems! Very Happy
