Yeah, I was completely bummed out Sunday when I realized it was going to take more work. I was still holding out hope that I could at least button up the back end this coming weekend and make it. I just got back from the paint store this morning, never imagining that they'd have to special order the tint for me. If I had tried to order it Monday morning I might have gotten it in time to work on it this weekend and still make it ...sucks. _________________ Jack Stenner

I feel your pain on the paint matching and blending. I'm pretty burned-out at the moment and I've done nothing compared to you! After this "round" of work I'm doing I will drive and enjoy and then touch up a few other spots once I've forgotten how much work it is. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Finally some time to get back to work on the bus. Lost count of how many mixes it's taken to get the color close, but I'm finally happy with the mango match. The computer match wasn't even close.
Before and after corner
Next I'll work on the deck lid and apron. _________________ Jack Stenner

Finally making some headway. The paint match has been a bear. I'm finally 100% happy with the seagull. I'm probably 95% happy with the mango. For a panel match, the mango is fine. For spot matching, it's hit or miss and requires a lot of tweaking. It took me a while to realize that one side of the bus is ever so lighter than the other.
Next area of focus is the passenger side. I'm working on the lower hinge area of the forward cargo door. Then I'll replace the driver's windshield (I have a correct replacement) touch up the surrounds and install new seals. I'm probably going to go back and refine some of the mango spot repairs on the tail now that I'm closer with the color. Lots to do still _________________ Jack Stenner

I have a long shot question for any original paint experts. In the image below you can see a white area on the apron below the "V". The paint on the apron is original. I only painted the area above the apron and up to the horizontal center line of the headlights. I'm assuming this is factory seagull overspray. Has anyone else seen this before? I guess I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or not. I suppose it would be hidden by the bumper in any case....

Never seen it but if its original, I would leave it. Makes for a great story and it's hidden by the bumper anyways. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Yeah, I think I will. BTW Todd, Chadd is sending me that Westfalia Mafia sticker...just need to decide which window
Another little detail that may be common knowledge, but was new to me, was the black paint around the fuel door opening:

The passenger side was the worst side. Damage to the forward cargo door and a lot of heavy sanding to fix dings when it was repainted back in the day.
I repaired the hinge and receiver earlier, but just now dealt with the door itself. The hinge had been shoved backwards causing the door skin to fold under and bow outward. Whoever did the work back in the day beat the metal to death and slathered bondo over the top. I was able to make a couple of relief cuts, straighten the edge and use a shrinking disc to get it back into shape. I've been dreading this part, glad it's done.
In process:
Lots of blocking to get it flat:
In between Florida showers I got it painted, but I'm not happy with the color match. It's a tad too yellow (hard to tell in the photo). I'll add some blue tint and reshoot tomorrow:
Started work on the windshield. It could have been worse, so I'm happy:
Neverending.... _________________ Jack Stenner

LOL whenever I have my doubts, I watch that time-lapse to remind me where this all began!

You look to be pretty close and I can't wait to see it! I'm working hard to be there. I reserved a camping spot in any case. If everything goes to plan I'll start my bastard rebuild late this year, so unfortuantely that won't be ready. Once I'm done with this paint work, my next step is to pull the dual port and take a look inside. If you recall, I didn't make it home from Bulli last year because of motor problems. I thought it was fuel. The idle was surging by the time I got to Bulli and on the way home it would loose power, etc. I decided to check the torque on the heads and they were unbelievably loose. Once I did that, the bus started up nice and smooth, valve train was nice and quiet, perfect....I thought. The problem is that it doesn't seem to want to hold torque. I start it up and you can hear a change in tone as the engine warms up (loud valve train suddenly gets quiet). I'm going to pull the heads and see what it looks like inside. I suspect I'll find it leaking between the heads and cylinders. If so, I'll put some new heads/pistons on it to get it going again. So that's the plan as of 6.29.2015 _________________ Jack Stenner

Was hoping to get a lot done today, but good old Florida rain, so I'll update this.
Ground the rust and POR-15'd the windshield channels:
Filled, primed and painted Mango before painting final Seagull:
Passenger side blocked, painted, color sanded and polished:
Artsy shot:
Decided to reshoot the drivers side for better color match. Here it is color sanded with 600:
And polished:
Once you get up close you can see a hazy area at the transition between original and new paint. I'll go back and hand polish this to reduce it, but it will always be there to some extent. I'm fine with it:
Started to reinstall the bumper when the rains came this morning:
Need to do some minor work on the front doors, around the gas door, engine lid and apron....the redo the front door window frames (really dreading this last one). _________________ Jack Stenner
