|
|
Hey guys, I need some help rather quickly. I got a sandrail for free in rough shape, I fixed it up and put in a 1600 that i bought out of my buddys 1970 beetle. i took it to get a vin and to get registered yesterday and the police impounded my car because the engine only has the vw circle and one letter for the engine vin. They are claiming someone ground off the engine numbers but there are no grind marks. I found the information that replacement blocks didnt come with a full vin and a service bulletin form 5-73 explains it. I need this service bulletin to get my car and engine back. Any help would be great |

Thanks guys hopfully i can get my engine back. they said i can remove the engine and take my car but they will keep the engine untill i can prove its not stolen. I think they need to prove it is stolen before stealing my fn engine. they said if i cant prove it they will crush it |

What part of AZ are you in. You do not need an engine to get it registered, or at least I do not think so. Sounds like the guy wants the motor. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

it was at the casagrande mvd. it is some bs, my other sandrail was registered in 2011 and it has no visible vin on the engine because its painted over. |

Since when do they check the engine #?
I have never had that happen, although I have never tried to do an off-road vehicle that I guess has no VIN #?
My '63 Bus only has the VW recycle symbol and an H as described above - no actual engine #.
It is a dealer replacement engine. (I have no proof of that though - just VW knowledge)
This Bus was fully inspected in person when I brought it from WA.
They never looked at the engine.
I'd try another MVD, if that is possible. _________________ How to Post Photos

Glad you've gotten it back and sorted out.
I remember discussing it with you at the Pavilions a couple weeks ago. Still can't really believe that situation happened. But it's not surprising and actually real good that they did or do check engine numbers. That's good news for anyone that has had an engine stolen. I'm sure that they have a long list of stolen engine and vehicle VIN numbers.
Like Everett said it might have more to do with it being a rail or an off roader. And being down in Casa Grande might also be a different situation than here in the Valley. Different county and different registration and licensing requirements.
So since you went to get a vehicle vin # then it wouldn't have had any sort of identification number anywhere on it except maybe on whatever trans it has. Depending on what year you are trying to get it registered as then up here it would have to pass emissions if it's a '67 or later. _________________ 71 Superbug
