Hello to all!
I recently got a 912 motor and trying to figure out if there are any paper hoses need to connect to these outlets i marked RED in the photo. Does anyone knows? It is a US heating system but because i know from VWs the fan shroud shouldn't have air outlets to hook up to those RED tubes?
It does not make sense how the heating circulate if these are not connected somewhere. And i do see lot of engines in that state.
Thank you for all your help!

The ducts you marked are intended to blow warm air onto the carburetors to facilitate running in cold weather. Valves inside these ducts are controlled by the thermostat on the back side of the fan housing; the linkage passes through the fan housing and rotates a cross-bar to both ducts. When the engine gets warm enough, the thermostat closes off these ducts so you're no longer blowing hot air (off the heater flapper box) onto the carbs. There are NO paper hoses attached to these ducts -- they just blow warm air in the general direction of the carbs. It's a clumsy set-up that only warms the aft carb barrels anyway, and never did much good, even on the 356 engines that also had the same system, although I suppose it was better than nothing. (Of course, the 616/36 engine in the 912 is indeed essentially the SAME as earlier 356 models -- leftover 356 engines were put into the new 911 body to provide a more economical entry price for those who couldn't quite afford the considerably more-expensive 911.)

Kudos on your well-detailed engine -- it looks very clean and correct!
