Now that all that metal is exposed, particularly the stuff you can't see, what is your plan to protect it? _________________ 1985 Sunroof Vanagon |

On our sandblasted cars they are ready to prime. We don't have bodies dipped because you can't do anything inside the panels. I did a Dino years ago with Redi strip and had to live with it for years as the solvents would creep from the seams and take the paint off and I would repaint at my cost. Maybe not washed good? I will never Redi strip again. |

Arriving near the facility for the primer bath. Here we are, in the burbs of Detroit, Henry Ford is spinning is his grave. The Chemically stripped body (Redi-Strip) will now be immersed in a multi step primer bath, like a new car. I hope the sand blast vs chemical strip debate doesn't start here, again. Been listening to this for DECADES. If you're not concerned with what you CAN'T see (what you don't know can't hurt you), stick with sandblasting. Maybe you have an Arizona or SoCal car, then you're "golden". And true, chemical stripping/primer dipping may (will) exceed the value of the car, so less likely for businesses or shops to us it. Plus only a few places that can do it. AND they don't really offer much discount for businesses to build any margin into. So, it's expensive, and shops can't make any money using it. So it remains reserved for the obsessed hobbyist, who's now WAY over budget. |

I'm curious to see the next step of this process. Wouldn't you want to have the nose fixed/dent free before you started this step here?
Looks like its coming along great though. As far as the hobbyist over budget, I've been thinking to myself that this doesn't look cheap ha |

I am sure that so far he is way over the price of what a new thing sold for in '73. that is just getting the bare body prepped for paint. _________________ Supposed to be 77käfer, but there are no umlauts on an american keyboard

I just looks so extremely awesome sitting there completely "nude"! Since I can't afford either method, I'm happy at just seeing the pics of someone that can! _________________ Michael

Randy, can you tell us more about dipping the body? Runs in the primer that will need to be sanded off? Buildup of primer were it don't need to be? Would like to learn more about this. 1967 and earlier Beetles were dipped, primer and paint. That is why they did not rust as bad. |

I am a little curious about the primer bath too. I live in the "burbs of Detroit"; what is the name of the facility that did this job? |

Body ready for journey back to Chicago. The process worked well. Was told it ended up in a GM production run, or something like that. |

Randy, this looks like an E-coat. Is this what it is? Looks nice, it's nice to work with clean metal. Good luck and keep us posted. |

Click for larger Image. Yes, definitely E-Coat. Submerged in some kind of charged primer. May be GM's truck chassis solution. All the cavities are filled now. Was told the process had several steps. This is a quick stop to refuel on the way back to the Chicago area. |

CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE. Close-up of the E-Coat process. Now it's off to the body shop. |

I'm watching this thread for sure, I love my '73, I had it in high school. Make sure you tell your kid not to let their friends sit on the windshield when its down. I am in the process of getting mine back on the road. Life happened real fast for me right out of high school, and it sat for a while. In the process of rebuilding the motor right now. But keep us all updated!

And now the Body Shop. This is where Greg explains to Bob that it's going to cost "this much" (hands 2ft apart). |
