But like we were talking about, all my problems are probably in the carbs. I'll definitely look at my pressure plate again and grab a new bowden tube tomorrow. |
I cheapped out on carbs when my engine was first built too. I ran a used set of Kadrons (that I got for free) for 5000 miles. I thought they were great till my builder convinced me on the IDFs. My engines smoother, has more power and I get better milage. If and when you do upgrade buy this kit, it has the best linkage. I haven't had to touch mine carbs in 17,000 miles, set em' and forget em'.

So you're gonna pull the engine again to inspect the pressure plate? What seems to be the problem? I would think you would have installed a new heavier one when you first installed that engine. _________________ __________

Robbie thinks my clutch feels weird. But we also have very different setups, mine being way worse.
I know my linkage is shady, Gary didn't like it one bit. I'm going to buy new thingies, the hem joint thingies. _________________ Wash your hands

I did say it felt weird, but your Bowden tube is also cracked in two and a half places. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Thore more I think about the second gear burnout and third gear tire chirp, the more I think that your fuel economy is not a result of rich running. Your right foot, maybe.
But I would drive it on the freeway to the rest stop near Pendleton, then shut it off on the off ramp and coast into a parking spot. Take a nap, go for a walk, then pull the plugs and read them.
I also THINK your vacuum signal from your carbs is coming on too strong too early, and leaving a little to be desired at the high end. This will improve your throttle response, but it might not improve your fuel economy.
Again, mostly thinking aloud here. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I took my readings while doing my most economical driving that includes the giant hill going south past college. But yes, the spirited driving is a factor.
I agree that the vacuum was kinda odd. I'm starting to think that I should just save up to do the fi thing we were talking about and then just use those carbs when I rebuild theven other motor I have.
I'm heading our right now to catch a few waves down at the power plant, but I'll let you know when I pull the plugs on my next inspection. _________________ Wash your hands

Ah- then in that case I would follow Rich's jetting suggestions.
Maybe read up on other people's vacuum readings with those carbs; Glutamodo posts some really good info on vacuum pressure tests for certain distributors. I'll bring my gauge next time. (And the rest of my tools, sorry...)
Enjoy the waves, I'm busy slaving for The Man. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Rich,
You can get the exact same kit through Aircooled.net for the same $779 with the good CB linkage. For $80 more they will clean them, jet them for your size engine, and set the floats. The nice thing is NO SALES TAX. So for just about the same price as CB, you get pre-tuned carbs.
The Redline kit is similar but I think their linkage sucks. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Nah down at Tamarack, sloppy waves and low tide
Yea, those linkages are nice and expensive. I'm gonna check with Jim at interstate to see if he has any good second hand ones. _________________ Wash your hands

Ponto was decent this evening when it calmed down a bit. Almost got a picture of some tourists taking a picture with my bus… I've been trying to get one of those for ages!

Na dude, by now you should know you gotta pay to play. Eight hundo ain't shit and would be 100% worth it cause your engine would run awesome. And you'd be ripping through transaxles cause you'd be chirping 4th too.
I asked about the surf spot cause we have reserved 4 nights at San Onofre SB in Mid July. _________________ __________

SanO is pretty legendary as far as San Diego spots go. The campground is near some good breaks, though a short walk will get you to a few different sized breaks.
I don't think Brian will have any problems ripping through transaxles currently. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Rad, those are great spots to surf usually. Lemme know when you're down in muh hood.
Yea I get what I pay for, and I still need to pay a lot more. I'm looking at the berg linkage, I like that one because I don't have to relocate the coil in that terrible spot. _________________ Wash your hands

Why is that spot so terrible? Have yet to hear anyone say it's bad to mount it behind the fuel pump. There is a mount you can but that mounts the coil in the same area it should be and out of the way of the linkage bar. I'll look for it and post a link.
Will be in San Onofre 7/13-7/16. Come on by and bring an extra board. We'll catch some waves, BBQ and drink some beers. _________________ __________

Personal preference. And it's in the way of the fuel line on my mechanical pump.

The spring isn't as important as getting your nappy-ass shift coupler fixed.
It really was just for sloppy shifting humans to better find gears. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I think you were missing a shift rod boot for the nosecone input shaft too; I don't remember, I was busy battling hose clamps and grease. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!
