She told me she was unloved, she told me that no one paid attention to her, so naturally, I bought her!

I sometimes make the statement "If you were closer...I'd buy that!" Well, this time, the PNW was relatively close to me and the 412 in question was in good enough shape to seriously consider purchasing it. Over 6 months, and some negotiations, the 412 is home! I haven't had a chance to go through it at all but it came with some extras...

Plans are to slam it on it's nutz, chop the top and make a truck out of it. After that, diamond plate the life out of it and call it a day.

Very Happy

Seriously, the car will remain bone stock. After I manage to scrape the metric tonne of moss and lichen off of it, remove the rest of the flames, blue detailing and that God awful tramp stamp, I will get to work arresting the rust and shining up the paint. Hopefully the rust is all surface. The bottom of the left front fender is showing rust, the outside DS door sill, bottom of the DS door, a couple spots on the hood and some spots on the LR fender including the air vents after just a quick look. I am moving my 5.5X15 sport wheels onto it, and with the wood grain decals that came with it (but I haven't found yet), I will be having the wood grain put back on it. I am going to find bumper over riders and start to collect Type 4 accessories for it. After saving some money up, I will have the black leatherette seats that came with it as extras repaired and put back into the car. I like the ones that are there, they are in great shape, but of course they don't match unless someone has some Variant rear seats that match that they want to sell me.

Some pictures from the hand off from the shipper.

Oh shit, it's ON now!

The woodgrain is under the bonnet. Don't buy anything till you do your Easter egg hunt and see what all is there.

I had people lined up around the block outbidding you as you dicked around for six months but lucky for you I'm a man of my word.

But seriously- have fun!!!

The wind in Sweetgrass would have sent whatever was in the trunk to North Dakota so I didn't open it yet. The shipper was a really great guy. Very easy to work with. I stopped on the way to the 412's storage place and spent $10 on washing it, and it still didn't get all the moss off!

I have to thank you again for cuddling me and speaking softly in my ear for the 6 months it took. You knew a sucker when you saw one and saw it through to the end! Applause

BTW, I have to ask. Why is a man of your stature in possession of diapers?

My wife works at the hospital and they're actually handy for automotive work and things like soaking up brake fluid from leaky effin 412 master cylinders handily.

Plus, my sphincter still leaks from when I acquired that fine ride.

Shocked So you're telling me that I'm in for more than I bargained for?

The D badge and the LE script suggest this is a European model, not USA. Is it so?

Not so. I bought bling. Wink The D badge was there. The front seats are Euro, though.

Cool. I "just" rescued a motor out of one of these in the junkyard, almost complete and it turns. It's been riding in the cargo area of my Bay window for 9 months now! :o Don't have storage space to put it yet. :( I think it's an 1800, FI, EC code, 76 HP. model??.
Good luck with the rebuild.

Well, went out last weekend to tinker with the car but the unexpected 50mph winds and storm wrecked those plans. Sorted a few things out while I could, put a little fuel in it as it was right at the bottom of the reserve warning, and ran it for a bit.

I had some rare free time yesterday coupled with great weather so I went out to the car to tinker a bit. Not a huge amount of progress yet due to snow etc., but I did remove the front plate holder (I was worried that holes had been drilled through the front of the bumper) and found that the bumper still looked good, no visible holes. If there had been, I would have been doing a bumper swap off my parts '74. I took a look at the condition of the headlight doors. They were in so-so shape and still had blue paint around each light, so I decided to swap them. Since my '73 didn't have 8 feet of snow drifted over the hood, I snow shoed my way down to where it was and swapped them out. One thing I learned is that the headlight doors for '73 are metal, while the ones off the '74 are painted PLASTIC. Ick. I don't remember this from the parts car so once things melt, I will have to make sure I check those as well just because I'm interested. Glad I did the swap in the winter because when I removed the left headlight door from the '74, a sizable wasp nest and about 15 dead wasps fell out.

I also spent some time with glue, binder clips and interior door panels. The glue holding the vinyl onto the pressboard had come off along with some of the mat backing, so I secured the backing and ran glue under the pressboard borders and used the binder clips to hold the vinyl onto the surface until the glue dried. I also installed the seatbelts back into the car. Having them included saved me from waiting for more snow to melt to rob them off my parts car. Very Happy

I also brought one of the wood grain panels back to town so I can talk to a decal guy I know. I want to price out the cost of repro-ing full panels back onto both sides of the car.

So, some progress to start the show season, but all of it time consuming Kinderwerk. Snow melts completely in a few months and then it will kick into high gear.

My brother helpfully pointed out that the chrome yellow almost perfectly matches my school bus in the background. I will have to put them side by side for pictures. He also asked if I was going to paint it a "better colour", and I just rolled my eyes at him.

Glad to see you starting to make some progress with the old beast. Looking good.

You should have seen the live yellow jacket's nest that was under the lip of the hood when I was getting all the stuff loaded in the trunk for you. That sucker was HUGE. It took me two cans of brake clean to wipe it out. It was just above freezing when I found it, too. Good thing or that place would have been full of pissed off residents.

Thanks! I noticed as well that the spare tire rides high in the trunk and found that at some point in the car's life that the tire well was hit (most likely if it was ever towed) so I will have to gingerly fix this. I had some more "bling" arrive from Germany this week for the car. It will now also have the "Variant" badge.

Hopefully no more surprises pest-wise with the car. I did find a sizable mouse nest under the back seat so I will be getting the water/bleach solution out and a vacuum to take care of that. That dash you included is great! Beautiful shape. Might tackle that after a while. I was thinking of getting a KPH speedo and swapping that in. The 5.5X15 sport wheels will be moving from my '73 onto this car as well. I'd love to find some rear mud flaps for it. I have a pair of the '70's chevron ones from a parts car but they are so beat up and torn that I don't think I can make them work. I have a proper plate holder for the front and I will be running the car with 1974 AB plates this year. You can link them to a current plate and if you're pulled over, show your registration and current AB plate and you are Teflon.

Well, finally after a long stretch of not being able to do much on the 412, I had some time today to do some more work. I can confirm that 4.5X15 ET41 sport wheels also fit on these cars with no interference issues at all. That was a plus. I found and installed the missing passenger side mirror and started to piece the interior together some more.

I thought that I would start and run the car a bit while I did this. It started, but the starter was dragging, to me meaning a low battery. It fired up and ran great but I noticed that it was pretty low on fuel so I shut it off and put some fuel into it. I started it up again, it cranked slow for a bit without catching but it did catch and run. After a few minutes, it started to run a little rough and miss occasionally. I stepped on the gas a bit, and it backfired. I went to inspect the engine and when I was poking around looking for a possible vac leak or something, it quit. I tried to get it going again and no dice, as it's acting like the battery is near dead.

So, the car isn't off the trailer and it's died. Knowing that these cars don't do well with drained batteries etc., I am going to trickle charge the battery to see if it was a low battery that caused the poor run issue and then why it died on me. Also, when it's up and going I will test the alt to see if it's charging or not. Crossing my fingers that as the car was started and shut down a number of times without being able to build a proper charge coupled with being in cold weather for 4 months, that the battery is the culprit.

FML.

If it backfired, you need to check that hokey air flow meter that's on it- if it popped through the intake, it likely jammed the flap. I'd put your good parts one on there and be done with it while the battery charges.

That was going through my mind as well. I will be robbing the AFM off my '74 parts car and swapping it in, hoping that it's a good one. So, it's supposed to be a 6 pin?. The backfire was quite a loud pop.
