Congrats! I hate to see all that beautiful patina go away, but it looks like you have a great start on a very thorough restoration. Funny, my low light's original destination was France. |

Looks like a solid car to start.
Look forward to seeing your progress.

Thank you for your encouragement.
I also like the patina, but the paint was not beautiful, and it was not the original patina, it was poorly repainted!
I want to restore the original configuration. it is February 56, and it is already registered LL registry.
The base is solid, that were a reason for my choice
Thank you for the link, it allows me to better know its history |

It was imported by ghia57 on here, came without the original engine,

Pm'd you. Russ. |

Bonjour Stephane,
Congratulations on the new car.
I looked at it carefully, in 2006, when it was in California. The owner at the time told me that it was sold and lived in the center of California, near Fresno, for many years. He found it on a farm there, in original (stock) condition, but showing the effects of decades of the hot California weather. He removed the original motor, and installed a big engine, narrowed front beam, and the Fuchs wheels and other hardware required for the Fuchs.
The car was originally Lizard Green, of course, but at some point in time, it looked as though the roof and A- and C-pillars were painted white: probably to make the car more cool and comfortable in that part of California (where summertime temperature can often reach 42 degrees Celcius in the shade).
I found it interesting that the door panels were finished in a special brocade textile material, not full vinyl or corduroy/vinyl.
The original ribbed tarboards were present in the engine bay - very rare to see. Also, many details of hinges and underdash area peculiar to the very early cars can easily be seen, and the special early bumpers.
The owner seemed at the time to think the car was earlier (he thought September 1955), but by the number of the chassis and body, it was definitely February 1956 production.
Here are some photos of details of the car on that day:

Well spotted! These super-early cars had a different channel section on the front and rear lid seals than cars made later in 1956. There were a host of details which were quickly superceded by improved, or easier to construct characteristics. _________________ David Ruby

Thank you very much for the pictures, Retrowagen , it's very nice of you to post here.
The body are many different details.
In addition to photos you put it, there is also the evacuation duct water front cover is different, and the door jambs are right.
I am disappointed because between different change of ownership, the bumper was sold before I bought the car! |

Hi
Yes the Body has to be manufactured in 55, because there are lots of small details, specific early production |

I don't entirely agree. This car was produced in 2/1956, and its details seem consistent with other early 1956's I have seen (though admittedly, I have not stripped the car to bare metal, as you have). And it is unlikely that Karmann would have kept the car's body in storage for several months, before assembling the car. They were working very hard to refine the construction processes for the new model, and meet a surprisingly massive demand. They simply could not build them quickly enough... _________________ David Ruby

Hi Retrowagen
my body is No. 1786 I know another 56 who is in No. 9000, and I know that a 55 in N° 250.
And features that are present on my body (right amount of doors, water drainage on the front, fastening joints covers, electric conduit pipes u in the right amount ect ..) the same checkout 55 .
I think a lot of changes have occurred 56 current between my body and No. 9000 I know.
Thank you to you for your interest in my KG, It is very boring to know the different characteristics |

I have a Jan. '56, body number 1568 with Karosserie number 1572., so your car has to be a '56 car. Too bad the bumpers were sold, any idea who bought them? _________________ ---
