|
|
i got a sweet deal on a complete 912 motor, my big question is with the flywheel and clutch and starter, i have a new clutch pressure plate and flywheel in the big now, and a 6 volt starter running 12 volts. i went to swap the flywheel and clutch and figured out the flywheel has more dowl pins. i would like to use my new clutch and start if possible. does anyone make a flywheel the stock size of the beetles but with more dowls for this swap? if not what do i use as far as flywheel and clutch set up.???? |

Keep the 912 original flywheel.
It has 130 tooth like a bug flywheel and will work fine with the beetle starter (unless your bug still had a 109 tooth set up) .
You will normaly need an adaptator for a guided plate on the gearbox of your beetle.
This is a cheap part that is easy to find and adapt.
You will have a much tougher time with the metal sheet around the engine and the width of the engine that is far superior to a beetle engine and will almost surely require some grinding.
Last but not least, you will need a way to access the carbs. Most people arrange openings in order to be able to tune the carbs when needed. It makes you life easier as well for plugs number 1 and 3. |

Why not?
The diameter and depth are the same. Number of teeth as well (130).
The clutch will be a 200mm guided type.
Migth have to grind a little at the gearbox side. |

The ring gear is offset about 6mm too far, and the three outer lugs on the pressure plate will likely hit the starter bendix when cranking. Bolts for pp may hit as well. _________________ Jack Staggs

I'm with Jack, the only use for a 912 flywheel is in a 912, it will not work in VW's and 356's. I built 2 "p-wagen's" in the 70's, a 64 bug and a 62 Ghia. I used a 200mm 6V 356 flywheel. Modify the depth for a VW bus PP and disk. If going 12V just put a 12V solenoid on the starter. Botta boom Botta bing all done... |
