So I am look for a new tool box to consolidate my tools. I went and looked at craftsman and was shocked at how chintzy they are.
I have been shopping Craigslist. Either the boxes are really spendy or they move in minutes.
I found this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-5-Ton-Heavy-Duty-Profess...0501006%26

What are your guys opinions as to brands, etc?

you should do some looking on the garagejournal forums for more toolbox opinions.

I had found a Kennedy box but the guy sold it before I got to him for my 3:00pm appointment to see it. He didn't even call me.

Snap-on is too expensive. I would have to sell a kidney

Harbor Freight boxes are well worth looking into, for both price and quality. I popped for a pair of the 56" version and have been quite happy with the purchase.

Sears makes a number of different quality boxes. I got the middle of the line with ball bearings. They are no professional quality but will last my lifetime.

To get a decent Sears box it would cost like 800+. Anything in the 4-600 range the drawers are flimsy, even with ball bearings

I think I paid about $800 for the bottom, middle and top boxes.

Bought them around Thanksgiving and on sale.... maybe 10 years ago. Still work like new.

10 years ago craftsmen was still a good company now it is complete shit with the quality barely as good as the shit from china Smile

I have a harbor frieght box that has many miles on it and is still kicking like almost new
I am also very hard on most of my tools since i use the piss of of them and the box has held up nicely

If i was shopping for a new one i would be looking at the harbor freight one or something from home depot or lowes since they back their tools better then sears does nowdays Smile

My craftsman boxes work great. They'll out last me. For the price, I'm completely happy with them.

I spent a lot of time looking at new toolboxes and I was surprised by how crappy the Craftsman boxes have gotten. I didnt want to spend tons of money either, so the really nice stuff was out of the question, so I looked on craigslist and bought a really nice 50's/60's Craftsman box (top and bottom) for $140.

I just got this one for X-mas. It's not the highest quality, but for $600 dings it fits the bill nicely. I wouldn't consider this if I were still wrenching professionally, but for lighter homeowner use, perfect!

Tool boxes cost too much IMO. I usually can score surplus medical and military cabinets for 40 bucks a unit. Some of them are real nice.
Look around and see what you can find!

This is my main tool box:
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00937985000P
and
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00937986000P

Poo poo Craftsman boxes all you want, but for 10 years this combo has kicked ass for me. For a home garage, it's tough to beat. I have a couple of really old Craftsman non-ball bearing boxes that are pretty hammered. Just storage boxes mainly. This box still has drawers that glide like new.

Hard to beat for $800 for the set IMHO.

I bought this same one last year and am very happy with the quality. My opinion is there is nothing in the market size and quality for the price.

I think you missed the part where we said craftsman today sucks
they when downhill a lot in the last 10 years you got one of the last good ones
anything craftsman made in the last 8-10 years is complete crap IMO I stop buying their stuff 12 years ago when I saw the writing on the wall that they were changing and going to shit

btw before that I bought a lot of craftsman stuff and yes I agree that anything craftsman made before the 2000's is a great product and I wish they still made them like that today Wink

Honestly it hurts to buy a snap on box, but it is totally worth it IMO. Especially if you use it a lot. I have a decent sized box that I bought 7 or 8 yrs ago new that I have used about every day since. Drawers still open like new. Cheaper boxes fail in that aspect of you put more than a few pounds in them. Whatever you get definitely get ball bearing slides.

I also have a vintage snap on box from the 60's in my home garage that works just fine. It is still nicer than a lot of craftsman boxes I've seen that are just a few years old. Obviously this all varies with how much you actually use one

Thats a pretty good idea. I will keep a look out.

I looked at the box at Harbor Freight and that box is pretty nice. It is probably the best thing in the store

Hit Craigslist, Pawn Shops, and Flea Markets for used top quality heavy duty boxes such as, Matco, Mac, Cornwell, Snap On... and never have to buy another one.
Craftman, Husky, Kobalt are useable light/medium duty boxes good enough for home use.
Always consider finding boxes with ball bearing drawer slides.

It used to be that the guys who had the tool trucks would take used boxes in trade when they made a sale. Sometimes you could get a pretty decent bargain that way.

Other times if you had a good guy on the tool truck and let him know what you were looking for he would keep his eyes open for you.
