25 Bucks a month? Is that really supposed to deter you? Is that the worst they can do? |

We will be heading to the country I can promise you. Both of our jobs required a certain distance from Hospitals and Airports but that has changed.
I was able to get going on the cargo floor sections.Like I mentioned before I had to open up the drivers side more than I wanted to to get the outrigger repaired. I decided to work around some good metal on the passenger side to be able to transplant the metal I needed to the drivers side. Although the angle iron rocker was able to hold the ambulance step up it really did nto do it for me so it is gone. Outside of that, this floor is not terrible so I am getting clean metal to lay down a clean weld.
Passenger side is locked down, still have some welding on the seam on the drivers side and of course grinding on both sides. Hoping to knock the drivers side out tomorrow but my gas is just about out which is typical for a Sunday right.
I am gathering parts for the front end as I hope to move there after the cargo area. I am going to give these a shot for the doglegs. they seem pretty nice, the spot welds will have to get a little dolly action but they look nice so far.
Still looking for seat pedestals. _________________ JLD

Looking good Phillip. I haven't used them myself but have heard good
things about WW metal lately. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Thanks. I used a WW front floor on the last bus and was very happy with it, I have a KF floor waiting on this one so I will be able to compare. These look the part.
As figured I ran out of Gas (physically too I think as I am shot) and cut off wheels so I am calling it a day. I was able to close up the drivers side and do some finishing on the seam. Have a couple of pin holes to close and need to attach it to the longpanel.
I really forgot how much work these floors were, on the Westy I worked on it in stages so doing 8 hours straight never happened or my back would have gave me the warning.
I have some vacation time to burn so I am taking the end of the week off so I may be able to make up some room on the front end. _________________ JLD

Thanks Jerry, Paul and Joey.
I got refilled on gas and cut off wheels so was able to grind down the plug welds. Grinding plug welds is fun OK.
I like to have two things going on at once so the entire time the case has been soaking in Dawn in a tub I have. When I am going inside I start scrubbing on the case and it gets cleaner as do my hands so I don't get yelled out when I enter the house.
This case has taken forever it seems to get to this point but it is pretty clean inside now, it is sitting on the kitchen table. I will pick away at it until I am ready to take it to the machine shop.
And the last little bit of update. I took a section of the long panel to my paint shop and asked them to do a match for me since just using the code would have certainly been to bright. Pretty early I know and was not even going to share but super happy with the results on the test card, on the panel and in the can.The guy that matched it has been doing it for 30 yrs.

Thanks Chad, I put in the application for the Mafia.
Thanks To Brian I was able to score a couple of Cargo doors with some good glass in them to replace the existing doors.
Brian said he grabbed these off a bus that had been turned on the drivers side for 20 years. The bottoms were good but the inner tops will require a little work since they were the lowest point.
Old on the left with some rattle can to see if it matched.
The forward door may be a wash so I will keep the original one on for now.
How they looked on the trailer.
Now
And an added bonus, the interior panels are miles better than my other two.

Chad we plan on coming down for NDBS again. Hoping to camp but hotel will work too, have to see what Paul wants to do. I am flexible.
I had Vacation time to burn so I started Thursday on the front end. Thanks to no windows in forever the front end took a beating from the weather. At first glance the nose and valance looked ok, but they were in need of help along with A pillars, seat pedestals and floor. I welded in some braces to try and keep everything in place.
Since so many parts have to line up to tie everything in I went ahead and removed the Dog legs. I decided to give the WW doglegs a shot on this bus since the fat lip doglegs appear to be made better than their old ones.
They took some serious tweaking to fit and will require a little more work before nailing them down, but they did gap up pretty good.
The outer profile is pretty good. They did require an enormous amount of time to fit. One of the main reasons is none of the flanges are square. The rounded seam where the dog leg turns down and the floor welds to was the worst. I had to use a hand flange tool and square up the mounting flanges on each.
The lower section kicks out so it will need some more work.
So once the doglegs were placed I could now locate the A Pillars. I cut the part of the A pillars that the doglegs mount to and welded in the new metal so I could put the back section in while I did the inner valance.
The good part of working on a bus with no floor is you can remove the bumper from the top.
Again at first glance not so bad. The Westy was much worse.
Marked the 6inch mark for the lip and went to cutting.
Lower nose gone, still not so bad.
And bam, no lower lip for the inner valance.
I have experience removing these parts and really am found of the 7inch cut off wheel on the arm breaking grinder I have.
I think I got most of that done in one day so felt like I had made some decent ground.
I don't have any pictures but I had to make a couple of patches for the lower lip for the Headlight support panel. Since I was in a tight working area it took forever to get in there and fix.
Once that was ready I could start placing the new metal.
At this point I could finish the A Pillars. I don't have a picture but the extension that welds to the a pillar and sits inside the inner valance welded in nice and tied everything up.
After several test fits and bumper bracket alignment now I was heading the other direction.
It took some help from the wife but we managed to get a good number of clamps set up to weld the outer panel up.
After hours of welding and hours of grinding the nose is back in place.
Since it is outside I hit it with some Krylon Satin Avocado. In the rattle can thread this is suppose to be a match. It is a little too green but if you use a tan base coat it matches a little better.
And after all that the dogleg actually rests right on the A Pilalr so welding in braces are a good thing.
Dog leg at rest.
So all in all a productive few days with some other things mixed in. I scored a pair of seat pedestals so the next steps will be to replace them and start getting the front floor in. _________________ JLD

Now that's the best use of vacation I've seen in awhile. Nice progress and I hope the a-pillars arrived on time and didn't hold you up. I like many others can't wait to see this back on the road keep up the great work. |
