Not trying to be a hater here, but... What is preventing the sleeve from debonding and pulling off of the rubber? Seems like the whole purpose of the big washer is to increase the surface area on the rubber mount. As the motor vibrates I'd think the sleeve will work itself loose. Seems Porsche put them there for a reason.

I 100% agree with Brent. The way you are using these mounts with the side shown on top (up-side-down), the large washer is a safety to ensure that if the round bonded sleeve comes un-bonded, it can't get pulled out of the mount. If this happens, you'll be dragging your motor & trans by your shiny front mount. You can already see it has become un-bonded at the top from the welding. . . The large washers also limit the deflection of the mount when it's under high torque by spreading the load over the face of the rubber mount. Without it, your motor/trans will deflect a lot more shortening the life of that bond.
You NEED to weld back on a large thick washer. The factory Porsche washers are around 5mm thick and nearly fill the flat recess out to the first rib.
Good catch Brent!! _________________ Regards,

I just have to say what an awesome build thread this is, truly inspiring. Please don't go read my latest build thread, I look like a total hack compared to Steve! I read this thread (all 53 pages! ) like I was reading a good book over the past few weeks. There are some cool characters over here in the type 3 forum! Makes me want to get a type 3. Also good to see that there is someone local to me that is a type 3 expert (Nate M.). Keep up the good work bro! You've officially got another subscriber. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia

toddb_67-
Thanks for the kind words.
Now there are six people who have read this whole thing!
Remember that old Alka-Seltzer commercial?
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing..."
Nate/Brent-
I have horns!
Those mounts will only ever just float there with no load.
But, you're right.
I'll go weld some washers on...
Good catch.

More junk gets in the way...
Who can spot the cat in this picture?
He sure is glad to have his stitches and Cone Of Shame gone..
Got a visit from Nicolas Lickalottapuss!
He's a caulking fool with that seam-sealer there..
Ah, a scene of domestic tranquility...
Made a start on the fuel line project.
Got the holes drilled, and started bending lines.
But then the sun came up, and it got hot, so..
I loaded the tunnel up to deliver to blasting.
We'll bend lines after we get that sucker in some epoxy!
Good thing I have a Real Car in case I need to actually drive somewhere!
On and on and on..... _________________ Bus Motor Build

I know you have horns. But, if you're going through the trouble of adding the brackets and mounts, why not go all the way and make it correct per Porsche? I think when you install that BIG motor down the road you may see enough twist to warrant proper mounts. _________________ 69 Fastback Build

Steve,
I hope you included me in the list of who has read it from the start. I even started re-reading it
I agree with toddb_67, it is like a good book. there's some highs and lows, twists and turns, of course there aren't many people in the world who will get it like we do, so don't go rushing to to many publishers just yet

Aww, shucks, guys, thanks...
To actually quit working, and basically dedicate my whole life to my vision of the ideal Fastback, has been a nearly lifelong dream.
Glad to see that some of you can appreciate it!
It has really been heart-warming the way so many people have helped me along on this journey.
And, they say it's a true friend that will tell you when you have spinach stuck between your teeth!
Sitting here in limbo waiting for the tunnel to get blasted..
But,
The big white bus there is going to be carrying us on a huge road-trip in about a week.
Like almost three weeks, One-Lap-of-the-Western-US Mother-of-All-Road-Trips(!)
From the CA coast, all the way across NV, through CO, AZ, and back.
Two kids, wife, dog, bicycles, etc.
In July!
Getting it ready for pre-flight...!
ANybody out there think of anything I'm forgetting?
Going to be _real_ hard not to just be fiend-ing out for working on the Fastback the whole time!
It's finally getting to the point where the parts are stating to go back together...(!)
Think I'm going to go down and bug the blasters to be hurrying along already.... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Sounds like a great trip to recharge the batteries for a re-assembly when you get back. Hopefully the tunnel will be done soon and you can set the foundation down, then to start putting it all together. _________________ MonT3

Agreed. Sounds like a great way to clear your mind, and spend some time with the family.
I'm sure the cat won't miss you too much, just as long as someone stops by to fill the bowl with food and water.
Yes, have a great time, enjoy yourself, and have fun. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Chris, took your advice and changed out the brake fluid.
Brake adjustment, e-brake adjustment, fresh clutch cable, compression test, new tires, wideband cold start/cruise troubleshooting, Rebuild CVs (Whee! ) lube/adjust controls, check timing, valve adjust, oil change, etc. etc.
Almost there..
In the meantime, 'Blaster Girl' has made right by me.
Henceforth now to be known by her real name - Brooke.
I can vouch for her now.
Even though her grunt ruined my decklid and messed up my door,
She did my hood and a few other things (correctly herself) for free.
Including this:
She also did some powder-coating work for cheap, and it came out nice.
Everybody makes mistakes, but a few are willing to try and make right.
If you need powder-coating or blasting in Santa Cruz, I can vouch for these guys.
Er, the girl at least.. Watch out for any guys there...
The last major piece gets epoxied....
Exactly One and a half gallons of epoxy so far.
Time to start coming back together.

How does this look, guys?
Big thick washer, opened up the hole.
Weld just a bit, then cool, weld, cool.
Fighting the urge to just grind these flush..
If they need more welding as a result, it would further cook the rubber.
And, some of Brooke's powder coating work...
Even when I'm supposed to be working on the bus... Can't resist! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Or,
