|
|
In our last installment,
The hero was stuck with a broken blaster... Two trusty side-kicks were making near zero progress!
So, this morning I was up early early and welding the cracked blaster tank back together..
Also stitch-welded the last few lower inches of where the clip hits the firewall,
And got up under where the shell sits on the cart
(Totally forgot about the part hidden underneath where the cart mounts the body; Helps to sleep on things!)
I was running out of gas.
My body would not move; it was 9AM and I was done.
Too tired to take any pics; only able to moan and groan..
Luckily, my friend Peter showed up and took charge.
While I sat and whimpered, unable to move, he finished off the blasting just like that.
(He really wanted my car out of the way so he could blast the windshield frame on his van)
He seemed pretty happy by the end of the day, what with the primer drying in the sun..
Mike and Luis came by later, and started sanding (and de-sanding) the shell.
My old friend William came over too; for a while there were three guys on it at once!
Kept me off my ass and engaged, keeping them supplied and rocking.
Can't sit and whine when you have three hands on deck!
Everybody also totally pitched in to de-sand my outside shop area - it was getting deep!
William is an Ace with a paint gun..
Basically chased down any/all repaired and thin spots on the whole car..
Here it is drying up off the cart where I repaired under there.
There was SO much to this day,
But I didn't get but a couple pics.
When Mom was slated to go out of town this week,
My goal was to get the clip on, and it all in primer - mission accomplished
Was thinking about it..
The whole Side-Swipe debacle set me back two years!
If this car wasn't in a wreck, (or was repaired correctly ) It would have been right here where it is now after Dave blasted it in the August of 2014..

Man, I'm really enjoying the progression on this build! It definitely gives me inspiration to work on Rosy. Keep up the good work! _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

Thanks for the props..
Buy rusty not wrecked!
(easy for me to say, right? )
Speaking of inspiration..
Spent a few days after work, and this weekend, putting these cowl pieces back on.
They were sitting around here for years!
Takes a lot of fitting to get these all sitting right.
Was using a dolly as a hammer up under the dash where there's no room to swing a hammer (among other things)
LOT of tweaks and fits to get this all sitting like it goes.
The original stamping was under tension - most of the work is to get compound curves that straightened out a bit, curved again.
Wind was up, wasn't able to weld it correctly yet..
Still, though... It's actually where it GOES!!
Speaking of inspiration...!
User here "fastbackdavid' PM'ed me this; His copy of a type4-into-type3 Tangerine..
He built this himself!
Inspiring... _________________ Bus Motor Build

That exhaust very pretty. But, at least Steve didn't loose the corner pieces in the last 2+ years. Just teasing Steve, after all, this thread is about your car, not someone's exhaust (even if it's very pretty). I guess fastbackdavid must have a gas heater in his car, or only drives during the summer time. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Here's what he said about it..
Pretty humble guy to not be showing it all off on the site here, eh?
You can bet I'd have posted 8 pages on it...

bought all of the tubing form Rich(super nice guy) Cone Engineering Los Alamitos. Some of the pieces are not exactly like Tangerine, for ex. the y piece. Another noticeable thing is that U's are not 100% uniform. I bought a Rigid pipe cutter as I was looking for the best/cheapest way to make perfect cuts. Tig welding likes good joints. Anyway, the pipe cutter told the truth. As I was circling around the middle of a U pipe to make 2 J's there was a skip, if you will. Maybe this is to be expected. I just wanted to convey what I experienced. Ultimately I used a cut off wheel on an angle grinder. FYI, check out Burns exhaust web site, good tips. Also, before I forget, I also included a bung near the collector that was welded in after the pics for O2 tuning, should I ever do it. As far as "sleeving", what I mean is that any proceeding tubing extends past the flange by say 3/16. Thereby providing a leak proof joint. It centers your gasket and flows the exhaust into the next flange and not the joint. All of which I learned afterwards. Oh well. The joint for the muffler was done but not my stub pipes. Originally I bought the stub pipes from AJ Sims and I thought I was ordering stainless. Turned out to be steel. But that is ok. Not sure if they have made another run of those or not. I think it was a friend of his. Either way, they can be ordered from Tangerine, I think in two sizes. My other item of learning was in flange thickness. I should have had the flanges cut thicker. In addition to that it is important to have the flanges made/bought to a size that gaskets are available for. Another lesson learned. So, those are the pit falls as they happened to me. The actual muffler was a Magnaflow. Anybody that welds stainless tubing will know about "backflow". You will need to determine what size tubing is right for your engine...primary, secondary torque blah blah blah upper end, low end. gear ratios, tire heights... does it ever end. lol I'm sure I can come up with the receipts for the stainless if you want to know. Otherwise, you could also do it in steel. Not as sexy but certainly less expensive. |
He even sent me a materials list - it came to about $350-400..
Might just have to copy this...!
Now, time to find a gas heater somewhere... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Steve, the body is coming together really nice. Soon enough you’ll be transcending into Sand-Master Steve. Plenty of time for exhaust bling (it does look extremely nice I have to say) my friend. Good job on seeing your shell thru rather than crushing it. _________________ MonT3

So, a few more 'days' come and go..
A couple of early mornings for some welding,
A couple of afternoons for some grinding..
Took a LOT of fiddly pin-hole chasing and hammer/dolly work.
Got in a hurry, and with the wind and all, the heat could have been controlled better;
Took a good while to get these butt-welded seams to lay down flat.
It helps to have a kid handy to hold a dolly you need, but can't reach..
Eventually, we got it body-worked reasonably well,
And squirted some epoxy.
This pretty much finishes up the patching/welding/grinding on the shell(!)
There is plenty of hammer/dolly/bondo/high-build/sanding/epoxy to be done, Make no mistake...
But here is some kind of milestone methinks! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Looking good. I like the exhaust as well. Maybe when you get the body work all done, a small diversion down "Stainless Exhaust Street " may be in order. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Just what he needed eyetzr, something to take his mind off all of that block sanding, filler primer, more block sanding, more filler primer, some putty work, more block sanding, and even more block sanding. Did I mention he's still got more block sanding to do. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah Bobnotch, I just went through all that sanding, priming, sanding repriming, sanding, oh crap a small dent from the beer bottle, more sanding, filler, prime again, etc., etc. I was just offering a carrot on a stick. A little something to think of while....you know the sanding stuff. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |
