Damn Clatter, those pieces cleaned up nice. Wish I had some space to blast my pieces as well as the shell. The vacant lot next door now has a home on it so blasting on my small retaining wall is not out. _________________ MonT3

I had a friend 3D print some levers I designed. The tube ID might need to be a little smaller to fit a thin walled socket in there. I was trying to make something that wouldn't require any hacking of the original levers and add enough space for the fat pump cams on the other end.
I really don't care for the Berg style arms, so made these as an alternative.
*edit* These are just for mock up, final will be steel.

That looks perfect.
Cool to see that next to the OG arm, that is bent, and likely to be the wrong angle and length.

OK, Some more stuff!!!
Funny how I type all this crap up, and nobody responds,
But post a picture, and no words....
So, we'll stick with pictures!
First, super cool to meet Chris "Old DKP Driver".
SO cool to have a wise sage in our midst.
And bringing a trove of type 4 treasures doesn't hurt, either.
Even if he is old, he still can't resist helping rescue a sideways body off of and old mattress!
So last weekend brought a garage sale score!
A spot welder, filter/regulator/oiler, 100 lot of 60 grit, roll of 60 grit, chop-saw wheels and a roll of sticky-back foam for the front fenders! $100!
Only place with tips for that old HF spot-welder was a place that sells DIY AK-47 stuff(!) At least now I don't have to wonder if the FBI is watching me; They are now!
Plus a tranny jack, with tilter bed and a U-J, $40!
After some work this morning, I got an hour or two of blasting.
And then had a big clean-up mission. BIG. Got the 'booth' ready for the whole car. moved that damn wet/burned/stinky Street Mattress in there too! (by myself)
Then did some more infrastructure work.
The plumber was by to fix some other stuff, so I got this water hose working.
Also, top right, a 30ft. extension cord reel, and to its left, a light reel.
Was going to plumb in my oiler, but hesitated...
Does anyone know if you can put an oiler up-stream of that whole hose reel?
Will it carry the oil that whole length?
I always use that hose for my oil tools, and the others for clean air and what-not.
But will it carry that whole way???
Then did a whole bunch more of this paint scraping crap...
Time to get that biotch in for blast!
That tire bucket is creased and dented... I'm over trying to search for a better one - they're ALL bent!
Finished up the end of the day fitting some tins and a shroud with my oldest son....
Hope to be doing some things we can share again soon.
It was a long time ago we built this motor,
Want to fire it off so he can see why we did it.
So, all in all a good day, mostly all dedicated to infrastructure.
Build it, and they will come. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Easily accessible flat areas can be left till last on the day of blasting. Just in case you run into any probs with your blaster or you hit some thick primer that slows you right down. Do all the nasty crevasses and seam areas with the blaster first. I did some flat areas with the DA sander or the resin stripper wheel on the angle grinder just because I was tired of using the blaster or if I was near the end and didn't want to sweep up another load of sand. It's also good if your your missus puts the brakes on your beach party early.
I had a dented tyre bucket too. I found it was easier to beat out than it looked. It's just a little awkward to hold up while you're working on it. Wants to slide all over the place. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

That spot welder is sweet!
One thing on the sticky back foam, is it porous? If so, no-go for fenders.
3M makes some strips of squishy sealing compound. I can't remember for the life of me what it's called. I think Bob posted a picture of it somewhere. It's kind of a tacky asphalty material.
I dig the blaster mods. Someday I'll be at it again ...jealous... _________________ 69 Fastback Build

Nice score on the tools and equipment. I'm not sure if you can plumb the oiler in upstream or not. Usually, you only want something like a 20 ft or less hose attached after it. Going 50 ft + might not get you the oil you need at the other end for your tools.
I agree with Paolo on the tire bucket, those are pretty easy to knock back out. Besides, the first speed bump you come across, will put a new dent in it.
Yeah, I use camping supply tape that comes in a 20-25 ft roll, as that stuff is the closest thing I've found to matching the original D-19 tape VW used.
I also agree with blasting the hardest parts first, then doing the easier to get areas. I've found that once you do the hard areas, the easy stuff becomes gravywork. Sometimes it works out like that, and other times, what you think will be gravywork, are the areas where the paint (or rust) have the best hold too. I've had it go both ways when blasting.
You're gaining on it, and the engine looks good. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Clatter as always great to see things moving along. Putting an inline oiler is only good for hard lines. The oil will trash the airlines over time. And if you use that airline for blasting or painting the oil will contaminate the sand and paint. I have a dedicated line for sanding and power tool use. |

I guess I was lucky with my spare tire thing. It was really really nice! Everything else was dented though...i'd rather have it the other way around. hahaha
How does that spot welder thing work? Does it hook up to your welder?
I hate blasting...you will have sand coming out of your heater channels even after you think you took everything out. Thats the only place where I literally spend one entire day trying to get it out. Til this day, I still haven sand inside there...
Good job on everything so far and nice finds! I'm envious of you. _________________ 68 Fastback Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5396323#5396323 |

I know of a person who bought one, says its welds pretty good. was going to buy one but the tongs are too sort for the actual welds I wanted to do. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

Yeah, you almost need to put the shell on a shaker, to help get that sand out. My buddy is still finding sand coming out from behind the dash of his truck. He blasted that area 15 years ago.
I kind of look at it more like I'd rather have a little sand sprinkle out every now and then, instead of rust creaping along some spot I didn't blast. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I see the power plug now! I totally missed it the first time I looked at it. _________________ 68 Fastback Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5396323#5396323 |
