This is my 1st build and was just planning on re-building the motor and brakes and driving it. So much for a plan. So far I have done link and king pins, front bearings, drums, cyl's, master and lines. New bumpers shift bushing and coupler. Then started to wire wheel the pans getting ready to paint and started making holes. So took body off cut out the pans and used 14ga tread plate to fab new ones. The transaxle is now out to clean and paint all of pan. So far all is good "I think" I ran the plate flat all the way back then tight against the pan under where the orig would have been. I figured I would have more seat clearance that way.

Rick looking good, and heavy duty that's for sure. Please get rid of that RED steering coupler! do a search and read about all the failures, you lose all steering control when they do and they don't have to be old. I've personally seen those fail on another buggy! go to a stock type rag joint. Keep up the good work.

Let me add a few more likely post titles and foolish statements to make you feel better about where you find yourself in your project. They have probably been thought or uttered by many if not most who post here, including myself. I bought a car in February 2004 with the idea I would drive it in April. I did..in April of 2010. Here goes, some will sound familiar;

1.) " I will have it all back together and running in the Spring."

2." I'm just going to fill a few holes in the body and drive it like it is."

3. "The 40 horse that came with it is good enough for me."

Good luck on your project. Looks like you are well on your way.

Well, it appears you have contracted Buggitis. There is no known cure, but there is a support group. Laughing

If I could have half the money back on parts bought twice I could probably build another buggy. Rolling Eyes
I have two or three of some parts.
Ideas change........sometimes multiple times.

I have had my buggy running since 2004 and every winter I sink a bunch of money into it on upgrades. Just because it drives doesn't mean you can't spend money on it......... Embarassed Laughing

Great thread! Glad to hear others admit to their "sickness" and that there are other "new guys" getting the disease all the time.
(I said 10 years ago it would take a year.....HA!!!!)

The most you can hope for is to have a supportive spouse who will continue to laugh with you and put up with your addiction. God Bless 'em but I think they put up with a lot, I know mine does. She keeps bugging me she is going to tattoo a part number on her so I'll pay her the same attention as VW stuff.

The pan looks nice and sturdy. Don't worry about the coupler too much. As long as the steering shaft is straight with the box shaft it will be fine. I had one on my buggy for 15 years and it was fine. It went onto another one and is still going. I now have a new one and it still looks as good as the day I put it on, even with the high stress's of wide sticky front tires and racing.

Very nice job so far keep it up.

Hello my name is Dave and I am a bugg-a-holic

For me like everyone else, been addicted for 4 yrs with mine, started out to rewire, now its got new paint, whole front end, went from 1600 to 2276, body lift kit and now I have a new to me doner pan with IRS trans I need to shorten and I already have the diamond plate to do just what you have done, I need to put the new swing axle in the old pan first so I can have some fun with it while I work on the new pan, I want to make it more off-road with way better suspension than the stock I have now on it, I do have some bilstein shocks on it now, but they still don't cut it.

(all) HELLO DAVE!!

Hey, do you have to weld the swing arm brackets into your swing axle pan, or is it done already? Just curious as I just did that. It took a good day to set up the jig, cut out the tubes and weld in the mounts. But it turned out really well. I still have my jig and was curious if anyone else might be needing it? I also have a "flexible pattern" (that we call them in the Hot Rod world) to make your initial cuts in the tubes. It will save HOURS!
I'd like to make this available to others to use as I am not sure when I will need it again. (I like to help where I can.) But, whoever uses it would have to pay for it to be shipped back and forth. And I would keep it available for anyone.
Just a thought............

The one I always seemed to use was "Two more weeks" I know it's been forever baby, but It'll be done in "two more Weeks"

Yeah, my wife likes to throw my usual "coupla' more weeks" back at me starting around the 18~24 month mark. On my last rail buggy, I used 1/8" angle iron around the perimeter and welded in three "floor joists" cross ways for strength before the checkplate floor.

Nice, clean job on that pan. The extra strength will pay off in less body flex when you drop a 100+ horsepower engine into it! When I get my Gazelle back on the road, I will sell it to get an older long body FG buggy to re-do. I have many times regretted selling my original short body Manx clone I built in the late 70's.

Nothing wrong with wanting to replace old worn parts. As you repair replace you end up a full circle.

Great start so far.

Geez -- come live in my time zone -- I haven't a AC engine under 300 HP since I sold my Blown Kawi 1000 drag bike -- it was only 275HP LOL

Keep going - its only money

Thanks everyone.
It's been fun so far. May is the date in mind for road ready. End of January chassis done and painted. Midway through March engine done. End of April all wired. End of May body on and running. I am hoping it's still 2014. Wink

Right on Rick. Post your updates, so we can give you grief if you fall behind!

Around here, Instead of "you've gone too far", you will likely hear, "why stop there?" This is the gasoline of which Joecoolcustoms speaks.

" I did not plan on going this far"

Tell me about it. Originally cracked the gas tank out in the woods and i was just going to replace it. then i figured why not do the steering box while the hood is off. and the window mounting while its off. then decided i want to simplify and will redo the whole dash again. Its a nightmare. one of these days i will get to it.

good luck with yours.
