It is a runner, but I have lots to do. Floors need to be fixed (replaced) first. The body is shabby. It needs quite a few interior parts, but I plan on redoing the interior entirely. I may need some pictures from you guys to know how it's supposed to look inside, because though just about everything is there, nothing is "right."
I bought it yesterday. I drove it from where I bought it to my work during my lunch break. That was an adventure, as on the interstate I didn't know if I was going to survive. People were surprisingly forgiving of my 60 mph speed, as I did try to stay out of anyone's way and never moved from the right lane. On my drive home from work last night, the engine stumbles a bit at stop-lights, to the point the red (alternator?) light flickers. No heater, so the trip was cold! It stops... eventually. And the transmission likes to stay in second; at 40 to 45 mph, I can hold the speed and it holds second, but then, out of nowhere, boom! Third gear.
But I am so happy! I talked the original owner down to $600. Add a 0 or two, and a year or two -- or five -- and I'll have a nice, unique car.
I'll have pictures soon. I'm going to try to document this whole "resurrection."
This is my first air-cooled VW.
Wish me luck! |

Wow! I don't remember seeing your 412 before. The Sports Bug wheels on your impressive wagon look dynamite.
And, good luck to UltraSheen, too! _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Ah, yes, different offset ... anyway, I guess it was for the same reason Beetles and Supers only got the 1600 engine but never officially front disk brakes in the US -- keep the cost down with the then-ever-changing exchange rate.

I'm a big fan of Marathons, too, but they only came in a 4.5-inch wide wheel. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I thought of putting a set of Marathon's on as I have 3 full sets, but I really like the Sport wheels better. The 5.5 wide is also a huge factor. _________________ 1970 Campmobile Click to view image

I guess I should ask my questions in my own thread instead of starting a new one each time.
So here's my next question.
I had a blow out and need new tires. My rims are kind of questionable. So I think I'll get 5 new rims and tires. 5, because the spare won't hold air either.
What's a good, modern size? What's the consensus? What's the largest tire (looking for grip in my hypothetical high-speed turns) that you guys run without suspension modification?
Thanks!
PS I say hypothetical because speed is not this car's strong suit. |

I have 185X60X15 on stock steel wheels tubeless. I wouldn't go any wider than that on stock wheels. If you are worried about the wheels leaking install the new tires with new inner tubes. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Ok, so what if I just wanted the standard wheels that came on the car and (I think) the Beetle of the time. Just those plain rims with the big chrome VW caps. Is there a name for those, so I can find a vendor for some new ones?
Google is letting me down a bit. Too much SEO from online storefronts... |

I think these cars will take a slightly wider/ lower offset wheel than stock, judging by the pics I've seen! Some of these have a slightly lower offset but are very close: http://www.mamotorworks.com/vw/subcategory/stock-style-4-lug-wheels and maybe could work for you. _________________ '74 412 wagon

Ok, more decisions (or, more accurately, day dreaming). You can see my car in the photo section. You know it's orange.
I picked a color for paint. Do a Google search for "pearl orange paint" and you should see some images that show that color on some cars. I think it'll look great and it's not a major departure from the original color.
Next, Wal-Mart of all places has some decent prices on tires. Nexen SB802 tires: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nexen-SB802-Tire-165-80R15/19473481 Those are $59 each, and $9 mounted. I can go to any Wal-Mart for issues, which is nice.
Finally, here are the rims I'm looking at:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C32-EIC-A
I'd like to find these local because shipping is expensive on these rims.
What do you guys think of this combination on a 4-door fastback 412? |
