It is a runner, but I have lots to do. Floors need to be fixed (replaced) first. The body is shabby. It needs quite a few interior parts, but I plan on redoing the interior entirely. I may need some pictures from you guys to know how it's supposed to look inside, because though just about everything is there, nothing is "right."

I bought it yesterday. I drove it from where I bought it to my work during my lunch break. That was an adventure, as on the interstate I didn't know if I was going to survive. People were surprisingly forgiving of my 60 mph speed, as I did try to stay out of anyone's way and never moved from the right lane. On my drive home from work last night, the engine stumbles a bit at stop-lights, to the point the red (alternator?) light flickers. No heater, so the trip was cold! It stops... eventually. And the transmission likes to stay in second; at 40 to 45 mph, I can hold the speed and it holds second, but then, out of nowhere, boom! Third gear.

But I am so happy! I talked the original owner down to $600. Add a 0 or two, and a year or two -- or five -- and I'll have a nice, unique car.

I'll have pictures soon. I'm going to try to document this whole "resurrection."

This is my first air-cooled VW.

Wish me luck!

Great! Post pics when you can. Not to be a downer, but the body work on these is going to be tough (in relation to getting panels). They are all NLA so you will be searching classified ads and/or local wreckers if any haven't crushed them all. Same thing with interior. Best thing to do is post and search here and on the ShopTalkForums for your questions and needs.

Type 4's are a labour of love and you really have to like them, or a challenge, to take one on. Sounds like you're up for the adventure.

Wow! Shocked I don't remember seeing your 412 before. The Sports Bug wheels on your impressive wagon look dynamite. Cool

And, good luck to UltraSheen, too!

Thanks! They are actually off the Porsche 914 and the size is 5.5X15 ET40. In my opinion, they make the car look 100000000X better. Never understood why VW when making this the most expensive, luxurious ACVW to date, would not have upped their game and put something nicer on than stock steel Beetle wheels and caps. Confused

Oh, a set of Marathons look good on these as well!

Ah, yes, different offset ... anyway, I guess it was for the same reason Beetles and Supers only got the 1600 engine but never officially front disk brakes in the US -- keep the cost down with the then-ever-changing exchange rate.

I'm a big fan of Marathons, too, but they only came in a 4.5-inch wide wheel.

I thought of putting a set of Marathon's on as I have 3 full sets, but I really like the Sport wheels better. The 5.5 wide is also a huge factor.

Finally gave up waiting out the cold and took pictures this morning. Lots of frost, but you have an idea about the condition of the car nonetheless.

Week 1 - no work has been done on the car, so far.

Honestly, for $600, you did well. Rust the major PITA and expense.

I guess I should ask my questions in my own thread instead of starting a new one each time.

So here's my next question.

I had a blow out and need new tires. My rims are kind of questionable. So I think I'll get 5 new rims and tires. 5, because the spare won't hold air either.

What's a good, modern size? What's the consensus? What's the largest tire (looking for grip in my hypothetical high-speed turns) that you guys run without suspension modification?

Thanks!

PS I say hypothetical because speed is not this car's strong suit.

I have 185X60X15 on stock steel wheels tubeless. I wouldn't go any wider than that on stock wheels. If you are worried about the wheels leaking install the new tires with new inner tubes.

I found that the 5.5X15 ET40 sport type wheels fit on the Type 4's, but so far I have only tested 165/80/15 tires on those for any rub issues. There were none but I would like to move to a wider tire. You can always look for the 4.5 version or a set of Marathon's, those look good on these cars as well.

Ok, so what if I just wanted the standard wheels that came on the car and (I think) the Beetle of the time. Just those plain rims with the big chrome VW caps. Is there a name for those, so I can find a vendor for some new ones?

Google is letting me down a bit. Too much SEO from online storefronts...

I think these cars will take a slightly wider/ lower offset wheel than stock, judging by the pics I've seen! Some of these have a slightly lower offset but are very close: http://www.mamotorworks.com/vw/subcategory/stock-style-4-lug-wheels and maybe could work for you.

Ok, more decisions (or, more accurately, day dreaming). You can see my car in the photo section. You know it's orange.

I picked a color for paint. Do a Google search for "pearl orange paint" and you should see some images that show that color on some cars. I think it'll look great and it's not a major departure from the original color.

Next, Wal-Mart of all places has some decent prices on tires. Nexen SB802 tires: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nexen-SB802-Tire-165-80R15/19473481 Those are $59 each, and $9 mounted. I can go to any Wal-Mart for issues, which is nice.

Finally, here are the rims I'm looking at:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C32-EIC-A

I'd like to find these local because shipping is expensive on these rims.

What do you guys think of this combination on a 4-door fastback 412?

I like the choice of wheels and also I have purchased and run a few sets of NEXEN tires of various VW's of mine and they are great tires for the price.
