I can say this.....my 71, even with the 4 vent lid, runs hotter than a sedan. My dipstick get hot, I can still bare hand it, but its pretty hot. I will be running stand-offs from now on.

Blue Bug Good luck with your 71. Just finished up our 71, have the 4 hole deck lid. 75 out today coming up a mountain pass top down 65 MPH, head temp 390 this is what to shoot for. Very Happy
+ or - 10* 300 around town, 350 cruising on the highway, 400 crawling up a grades, IMHO any thing over 410 I start to worry 450 is some place I don't want to see.
FYI all gauges are different as well as engine YMMV.
I use VDO.

Time for another update to this project. I have been doing a lot of work on it lately and trying to take pictures as I go along. This project has moved full time into my garage much to the dismay of my wife, she's a very patient woman. Mostly I have been doing more weld repairs, as with a lot of these projects, the more I cut away the rust I find. I have gone through one whole spool of wire and one whole bottle of welding gas!
Here are the running board attach panels getting welded back on.

Here some pictures of the front wheel well repairs. I like to mock up the pieces I need to make with cardboard and then duplicate the shape with metal. This area is all finished and the welds are ground down despite what you see in the pictures.

The car had been in a pretty nasty side-swipe type of accident at some point and of course it was just bondoed over. At some places it was over 1" thick! I tried to hammer it out from the back side but there just isn't enough access so I thought the next best thing was to cut the damaged metal out and weld in a quarter panel from a junkyard donor car. As luck would have it my local yard had a rust-free '71 so I cut the panel off of it and took a few more things I needed. I have a feeling this won't be the last time I go visit that car!

As you can see from some of the pictures there was some decent rust behind this panel so I'm now in the process of fabbing parts and welding them in before the quarter panel goes back on.

Oh, I almost forgot. I got a proper 4 vent decklid off of the donor car, it is straighter than the one on the car and it is period correct to boot!

Well that's all for now sambanista's, until next time....

Unfortunately that's a 72+ lid but its only the vent pattern that is different.
The 71 vert lids were one year only part and almost impossible to find.

Even though this came from a '71? You can see it written on the decklid and I confirmed it by looking at the car's VIN. Oh well, it's more correct than the two-vented lid and it is in better shape so I'm going to roll with it.

It obviously wasn't the original to the that car but not surprising I don't think they have ever been reproduced being a 1 year convertible only part.

Most people don't even notice the difference, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Like you said much better than the 2 vent sedan deck lid.

Time for an update...
The quarter panel is now fully welded in place. Despite my best efforts to control the heat during welding there is some slight warpage to the lower part of the panel. It's not too bad, a quick skim of bondo should fix it.

Ughh, those corners were a pain! I'm done with them now and need to upload the finished product. My advice, put it back together one piece at a time. It wasn't until I fabbed my third or fourth piece and welded it in that it started to take shape. I'm glad the welding part is almost over.
Up next, sligning some mud. For the record, I hate bodywork! Kudos to the people that do that for a living.

I got a little lucky and purchased a 71 sedan parts car that had no rust anywhere. I have cut all the panels that I need to replace on the vert out of it and will be starting on it next month.

Oh my damn!! I bought a pretty solid 68 and was complaining about some of the work needing to be done. As a first time bug and car owner at that I salute you. You are a beast and a trooper for taking this project on. I'm years away from even being in your ball park. Shocked

My 1971 Convertible's engine lid is long-gone too, bought it in 1976 and the lid was crinkled at the bottom, so I traded it with a co-worker who had a '70 sedan and was making his into a Baja-type anyway. So I use still that 2-vent lid plus hood standoffs, 1835cc engine.

Most of the sedan panels will fit (like my quarter panel) but this area

is a little different on a sedan so be careful what you cut out.

I just take it one piece at a time. I'm certainly no expert in welding or fabrication. Some of the people on this site are amazing, I'm just your average guy with a good welder (that I borrowed from a good buddy). I can tell you that having the right tools makes life a lot easier when it comes to doing this work. It is a little nerve racking at first but I've gotten over it!

I'm really not worried about the correctness of the decklid. It is a four-vent which is more period-correct than the two-vent lid I had on there. Out here in the great Northwest we rarely see temps above 90 degrees so I'm not worried about it overheating. The way I figure it is if my bus with a 1776 doesn't overheat I doubt a stock 1600 in a beetle will.
Thanks for the comments guys, I was starting to wonder if anybody was paying attention to my posts Laughing

Wow, I can't believe the last time I updated this was in June! I have been steadily working on the car an hour here a day there. I am really close to taking it in for paint. I have a few more areas that need some final smoothing and then it is getting towed to the body shop. I want to preface this with, I HATE bodywork! I really have to get myself in the mood which is why I have only been working on it a little at a time since that is about all I can stand to do. here we go:

It's coming along nicely! I haven't done anything to mine but drive it Smile . Be careful with the top hinge mounts, mine were all buggered up and I ended up having to replace them.
