What a find! Does your car still have the black taper-tip exhausts?

I have a NOS pair of these, are they worth anything?

I'd be interested in them for my restoration.

What you looking to get for them? Got any photos?

Thanks

Those are so cool. I love seeing old parts in the original boxes.

For all the nice things CWAVE said about my old beater, I will bow out of the bidding. His bugs need these tips more than mine; mine is a long ways off from restoration.

I got bad news for you Rome, that's one of the last pic's taken of Bill's Sports Bug. A week or so after that was taken there was an unforgiving fire in his garage.

Shield your eyes, this is pretty gruesome.

Fortunately, Bill had insurance, he rebuilt a bigger and better garage, and a nicer Sports Bug.

My plan for this weekend is to put the complete Sports Bug away in the trailer and pull the second "Sports Bug Shell" out and into the garage. It's still full of snow and ice, so first things first will be to thaw it out and see what the damage is.

Upon closer examination, it appears that the previous owner took a sawsall to the bottom of the A Pillar just above the door hinge on each side. I recall that he was telling me he had trouble getting the screws out to take the doors off. My first choice would NOT have been to hack the doors off in that manner. Actually that would have NEVER been an option in my mind. But what's done is done.

Once I get the car (what's left of it) into the garage and thawed out, I'm going to do a quick assessment of the panels I'm going to need to order, and get my order in. Sooner I get my order submitted, the sooner I can start digging into this project and undo the damage that's been done.

So, end of the coming weekend, beginning of next week I should have some more detailed photos of the beginning of the restoration/investigation.

Can't wait to start digging into this project.

I'm also going to have to figure out a way of supporting the body for the time being. The only support the body has right now is the roof, so I'm going to have to be gentle. What I might do is do a quick measurement off my complete Sports Bug on the door openings, and weld in a piece of steel of the correct length at the same spot on the shell, just to stabilize the body somewhat. It's not stable at all right now.

J, I know; I know. The next year when I spoke to him and asked about the car he told me the sad news. I couldn't believe it until he showed me the same photo you just posted. I did not want to let any Samba reader down with that fact after I posted my photo. Dang- that was such an appealing car- the lowered front, the 1915cc engine; everything done top-notch.

Fun to watch this thread, I purchased new a 73 Sports Bug and truly loved the car. I seem to remember that the reverse gear was a problem for that particular model and mine was changed before I took possession of the car from the dealer.

It sure did attract lots of bumble bee's. Laughing

Great pictures of your painted Sports Bug body. Hope mine will look as good when it's at that point.

One day ahead of schedule, I managed to get the complete car into the trailer and the first of two that I'm going to restore into the garage.

Tomorrow I'll dry it out and start looking at what needs to be purchased to get this project rolling.

Just discovered something kind of cool. My two Sports Bugs are only 6 cars apart in serial numbers. Thought that was kinda neat! They probably saw each other on the assembly line.

The build date on both car's door stickers are 03/73

Interesting... They may have arrived in Canada on the same boat, or even sold through the same dealer. What are the odds of having them both?

I got the history of both cars from their respective owners, and it appears that they were both sold from the same dealer here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

I have a friend in Ontario. When we were teenagers in the 80's he had a Sports bug (that car is now long gone), and has recently restored another. The serial numbers of the car he owned in his youth, and the one that he has now are only 5 cars apart. Crazy huh!

I seem to remember that dealers only received 2-3 Sport Bugs at the most. So, this story makes sense.
