Hi, I want to paint my Beetle the same color as this '43 KDF Wagen. Can someone please tell me what shade of black this is? I love this color and look. it doesn't appear to be metallic and shiny, which is what I don't want.

The original paint for the KDF Cars was produced by Glasorit. They also constructed the industrial pain machine for the VW 38, which was also used for the post 1938 Volkswagen. Glasorit has a classic department and will help for classic colour concepts.

The correct paint for a 1943 car was Nitrocellulose Lacquer which is now not legal to paint with, it shot a semi-matt style and could be polished either lightly to have a clean kept look or with some serious elbow grease it could be polished to a mirror like finish.

These lacquers were in many colors, as most of those WW2 Beetles were painted in various RLM paint codes, I've seen Black (WaffenSS) and Violet Grey (Luftwaffe) and other colors used on wartime Beetles and Kubelwagens.

All those cars being restored now in Poland and the East Bloc countries are still being sprayed in Nitro-Lack lacquer.

Best is to ask a high end place that restores stuff like Dusenbergs and Cords, etc. They more than likely still have ways of getting the old lacquer.

Bill Hirsch and others still sell nitrocellulous paint in the US. Look in Hemmings for an ad or google it.

X2. Since you're asking about that particular '43, I'd listen to [email protected] since he owns that car Cool

Were any of the KdF Wagens ever painted the grey/blue color that was advertised as the only color that was available? Here s a KdF Wagen Sparkarte stating the color grey/blue for the Cabriolet.

Some of the very few surviving 1943 KdF beetles Type 60 as for example the 1943 type 60 in the Grundmann collection and the 1943 type 60 belonging to the German VW dealer network Schultz-Group and one or two others from 1943 are painted in a dull grey.

Here are some documents to help to define the body colour for a civil 1943 KdF type 60 beetle. The main document is a copy of the internal "paint material consumption list" from Volkswagen works edited on Oct. 20, 1942 and it says for the body dullgrey E 24 RAL 46 . This has been verified on untouched areas on several very original 1943 type 60, for example behind the cardboard cover in rear luggage compartement or behind the riveted VIN tag:

That somebody was Josef Stalin Twisted Evil , who stole the KdF Savers money from the BDA-Bank in Berlin in 1945. Every penny including interest was diligently waiting for civilian production to begin. NONE of the money was used to build the factory or build military vehicles.

Glasurit was the first and only paint brand to be used on early split Kafer models since their inception in 1938? Or were other paint manufacturers involved with supplying paint to Volkswagen?

Hmmm... Seems that Josef Stalin also stole all the graublau paint as well since none of the KdF Wagens were ever painted that color Question Question Question
