Amazing work as always...love following your builds, they educate and entertain. I've been an amateur restorer on about 10 cars now and have found myself a 58 Ragtop that needs some love. I will be watching this build for more pointers. Subscribed!

A Former Oval Baja was nice enough to give its life so that many others may live, Very Happy Now we have a real nice early quarter to work with. The majority of the Og Quarter on the split is still real nice so I will only replace what absolutely necessary.

Ok, so I wanted to see the different effects of Rust on Painted and Raw metal

particularly the results using (gold in color) "Weld through Primer"

It just started raining here again so im continuing my test.

In this first photo is two pieces with a light coat of weld through primer then Spot Welded together.
I did this several month ago and sit it on my tool box to see what indoor effects it would have (even raw metal sitting indoors will begin to rust)

The piece was then put outside during a few day rain spell and left out there for about two weeks now. Here is that piece

You can see rust already "collecting" at the seams!

So last night I spot welded two totally raw pieces together as well as some with just regular store bought primer and then put them outside with the original test piece.

here are those pieces

I went ahead and made a weld through primer test piece with "spot welds" and "tack welds" . I want to see the different effects they have.

Then I also made a raw metal one were I wounded the metal with a sanding disc to see if ground down areas rust faster.

I dropd into the Shop to took a look at the test pieces..

This first shot is with the original gold test piece that's been out for several weeks, the two day old completely raw piece, the two day old hardware store primer test piece and the wounded raw piece from last night.

Im somewhat impressed with the hardware store primer however It is not designed to conduct and weld through. I got lucky with the spot welder but I bet if I tried Mig welding it, it would get ugly fast. Very Happy

Next Part well be cool, Im going to "Tear Test" them apart and see inside.
(If the spot welds where done rite they will not release and I will have to "Tear" the pieces apart.)
