nevadaesh,
Do you have a link to where you bought your RedTek? My browser/internet is going through Italy/Poland tonight and I cannot find a source. From what I'm seeing the last it was available was 2012!

Thanks. Good job on the write up as I'm installing a '90 year AC unit into my '84 and wondering if I was going to keep the plastic housing or modify the wooden shelf space to accept the evaporator and fans. Your pictures helped a lot.

For once (and only once), we Canucks have better availability of a good product up here. Every NAPA outlet, Canadian Tire store, Princess Auto store, etc etc sells the whole RedTek line over the counter up here.

Anybody close to the border should consider buying RedTek up here.

I had no issue getting my redtek. Called the number Terry listed, talked to a person about my needs and 4 days later the cans were at my door.

Person I talked to recommended 4 cans of 12a (no sealers or oils). Three would have been cutting it close, and by purging the charge lines first I may have ended up just shy.

Pulling a Vacuum Friday and Charging on Saturday!

Psyched to get this completed.

Pulled a vacuum today with my trusty mastercool 3cfm 75 micron unit and everything appears to be going smoothly.

Got the lines to fit without 90 degree connectors (barely). had to snake the high side line through the coil since my compressor is turned 90 degrees.

Oiled and started up the pump with high and low side gauges open. Supprised to see vapor coming out of the exhaust which was not oily. Wasn't sure if that's moisture or pag 46. Only lasted 30 seconds.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It took only a couple of minutes to peg out the vacuum scale, and I left the vacuum pump running for two hours.

Closed the manifold valves and then shut off the vacuum pump. Two hours later the vacuum is still at 29/30 which is a good sign. I'm leaving it overnight.

If OK, onto charging.

I cant wait to see the results. I plan to use this DIY as reference for my own rebuild as well. I plan to use R134a though with all new parts on my 85 model westy like you have. I have a Bostig\Zetec swap so a few things different there but should follow the same path as you relatively. Exciting stuff you have done here and I appreciate all that you have posted as it will be a HUGE help.

Thanks again

Hit a problem which I started a more specific topic here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=592739

Looks like I have a defective expansion valve, or the method I installed it/insulated it is causing an operation problem.

Right now the system works and is blowing cold air, but it certainly isn't operating in a sustainable way. Have to dig into the expansion valve to test and possibly replace.

Love the Eaton hose system and the entire set up. Held a tight vacuum for 24 hours. Just sucks that one of my new parts may not be up to the challenge.

Don't be discouraged, you're doing great.

Might be the tiniest piece of crud got into the line and plugged the valve, you won't know until you take it apart. "So, that's where Uncle Elmo's glass eye went..."

Not sure if this is helpful but in working to do this same AC setup I create a simple diagram with the parts listed for reference. cellerdoor let me know if I am off on anything. I hope to see my parts arrive this week myself.

Don't laugh but I have already made a word document with all of your images as well. Smile I was super excited to see you had done the AC setup on the Bostig too. All the photo comments helped me a lot. Very much appreciate that. Once I get the parts in for the hose lines I may start a thread to help others and provide any insight I may get from the experience.

I have all new hoses and EZ clip fittings in, need to wire the trinary switch. Not worried about the fan, but where and which wires did you connect to? I have an idea what I want to do, but would love to get reassurance from someone with a working system.

I have the 4 pin connector from the VW binary switch, 2 red/blue, 1 red/black, 1 red/white. My trinary has 4 wires, 2 blue, 2 black.

My evaporator, only thing not replaced, blew snot for 4 rinses, now clean as a whistle. Used TK's air line antifreeze alcohol, worked great!

Well, I found this thread after Cellardoor responded to my Recent thread about new AC hoses.......
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=622520&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

The job is very similar so am linking them. The new thread has already gained some insightful info before stumbling upon this thread.
Seriously considering locking mine down, link it to this and make this existing one the authoritative how to modernize your aging 86 AC.

This thread has some hanging incomplete story lines though....
Cellardoor....
Bad expansion valve
Relays/wiring for safety cut off relay and switches, hi/low
Did you ever wire in your trinary switch?

JudoJeff...
Wiring for your install? I understand you had issues and blew a line?

Surferboy.......
Your install? How did it go? Any insights?

Nevadaesh.......
Whine? Noise solution?

TK.....
As always thanks for your input

Howesight.....
Most helpful info here and on my thread! Many many thanks.

Anyone.......
What is the screen mesh over the Evaporator output for?
Catches stray water droplets?
To reduce air flow out of the unit rendering the rear location worse than it already is? Shocked

Also a link to evaluating 508 compressor condition and reuse......

I did wire up the trinary switch successfully! I used led lights via straight pins to tell me when circuits were on. My air conditioning is awesome, so cold I run the fan on 2. I had a temperature probe in the outlet and the lowest it blew was around 45 degrees F.

Dave,
I have leftover binary valve (VW) and cut hoses with fittings if you want them.
You pay the postage and they're yours.

I highly recommend using EZ Aeroquip fittings and hoses, very easy to do, the hoses are smaller in diameter compared to the old ones, and easier to route. Hose can be found on EBay much cheaper than retail. Some fittings can be found, but not at much of a bargain. The install kits on Ebay are very cheap, as is just the crimping pliers.

Wiring clues.........

This is of an 82 Air Cooled system........ Was found in papers with an 83 water cooled unit.

This diagram may be a hint for the AC controls but clearly is missing the radiator cooling Fan......

Would it be a good guess that this relay controls the radiator cooling fan Hi Speed on my 86 Vanagon with early 86 AC?

On the 86 and newer system the pressure controlswitches are found on the LR pillar.

Where are the pressure switches located on the 84, 85 system?

EDIT: Answer to the above......
There aren't any!
Many older systems ran without hi or low pressure limit switches!

I Strongly suggest that they be added during any system rebuild. It will require some simple wiring.

Transferring some system rebuild information over from the Compressor thread......

Word that. I'm right behind you, Dave!

I'll be pulling the old hoses this week & use the original fittings to rebuild with new barrier hose.
Flush out the old condensor & evap, drop in the new 508, r/d & expansion valve & I should be
pretty cool pretty soon! I'm budgeting about $750 for all this, not including what I already have
into my service manifold, vac pump & R12a already on hand.

FWIW: My R12a brand is "Envirosafe" < http://www.es-refrigerants.com > which is identical
to RedTek, but was a better price at the time I was shopping about a year ago...YMMV.

Keep cool! Cool

If I may suggest....... Do not yet build your hoses, especially with the existing fittings.

The odds are high that you will need different fittings.

The 6630 compressor, while is piped in the rear as the original is, it uses different fittings.
The replacement 16x22 Condenser probably has different fittings and most assuredly in different locations so length will need to be modified.
The Receiver /Dryer...... You can get the factory unit but......
Keep in mind that as built, your system has ZERO safety shut down devices. No low pressure. Shut off, no high pressure shut off either.
You run the risk of compressor damage or exploding hoses as a result.

I would consider a rec/drier with a trinary switch that you wire into you compressor clutch and into your radiator cooling fan.

If you go this route, you add redundant safety and may need different fittings on the rec/dryer as well.

For the entire system rebuilding let's use the System rebuild thread....... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=583818&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Focus on compressor options here.

Dave

I am leaning heavily towards purchasing the Vintage Air Receiver/drier #07323-VUC with the trinary safety switch port built in and the switch is included.

At $59 it seems like a good deal.
I Won't need to get a separate switch port on a fitting, the AC electrical and Radiator cooling fan controls are to the left of the driver.

This unit sets in the LF wheel well so will need some road hazard/debis protection provided.

I am trying to determine if their Vintage Air Condenser, 14" x 22" is worth purchasing as well. They make glowing claims to its 40% superior effectiveness.
But.....
At $149 it is significantly more than Nostalgic Airs 16x22 unit.

14x22=308 sq in
16x22+352 sq in
If their +40% claim is true, the14x22 is equal to a lesser unit being 431sq in?

Gathering parts together as I've figured out the AC wiring, the location of particular components, sizes needed, replacement options, what needs replacing or upgraded, etc.

I am staying with Oring sealing joints when given the option.

In that vein this is what I've ordered for the Early 86 .............

Genuine Sanden SD5H14 Compressor. Modern replacement for the original 508 series.
(I did debate going to the SD7H15 but I don't think it's worth the extra cash for the seven cylinder. It produces a mere .115942028985507% more output that the SD5H15. 138cc vs 154cc )

Vintage Air PN 047000-SUR rear cover "K" rear exit...... $199 plus shipping.

Condenser, Nostalgic Air #54-1622 unpainted....... $89.99 The Aluminum fins on my original Condenser crumble and turn to dust when touched.... Jersey De-Icers at work!

Receiver Dryer, Nostalgic Air # 4-1000 ...... $14.99

Binary Switch, Combined High Pressure and Low Pressure Shut off switch..... Nostalgic Air #119-9900 ......... $9.99.
Screws into Above Receiver Dryer. Will be protected in the LF Wheel Well from Stones Etc. by cutting an old pump Spray bottle to fit over the unit and clamp it on.
