The body was lowered onto the chassis for the first time. It's only a temporary union 'cause the body will come back off after the pan sheet metal is figured out and welded up. Besides.... The suspense was killing me! I just had to see how well the BFG 295's fit under the fenders

Jim, Nice work. Are you using lap welds on the pan or are they butt welds?
Great story.

Manooon28: I went with Butt Welds. It will be primarily a street car. I thought about adding gussets but then remember my two other Manx that were also butt welded by prior owners and how well they they stood up to off road abuse. 'Ol Red, Bruce's first monocoque manx went on to win the first Baja without a chassis and still in great shape today.

Iguana: They are P295 R 50 15 that are about 12" wide with 10" tread width on 10" wheels. The wheels were set at the original factory back spacing and fit nice under the widened fenders.

Big Bear bash is the objective. It will still be a work in progress but driveable.
I wanted to have Bruce sign the inside of the hood but he was recovering from back surgery and not very mobile at the time. I'd like to get it up to Big Bear and have Bruce sign it then.

You have to go to Big Bear. Vincent wants as many Kick Outs as he can get there. He does not want to be outnumbered by original Monocoques buggies.
I have #12 there and yesterday tried talking #40 in to going.

I will have Kickout 33 at the 2014 Big Bear Bash.

Notice I didn't use the word: done?
It will be a work in progress but able to cruise under her own power but she will be there!

Worked on the (passenger side) pan to pull in the side rail mis-match. Accomplished a "Pies-Cut" in the corner and drew the side in until it matched. A couple tac's to hold together. Only a little minor body work to get the radius to line up required:

Using some of the removed material to create a patch for the rusted battery tray. Lined everything up for a stock appearance. It's in with several tac's and will finish weld in the morning (it's Miller Time!).

How is this project coming?

Will you be able to make it to Big Bear this year?

The project is moving along. I typically shut things down between Thanksgiving and the first of the year for family time.

I started back up recently and was going to start the engine a week ago. I wanted to re-check the valve lash and when I pulled the #1 plug to verify TDC noticed what appeared to be a cracked piston. I pulled the motor and removed the head only to realized the previous owner/builder put large scribe marks on the Pistons to mark 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The engine was used in a friends sand rail that was in the garage when his house caught fire. The fire dept used plenty of water to keep the magnesium from burning and filled the cylinders with water. The barrels are pretty much junk and I've replaced the Barrels and Pistons with a new set. Wrapping things up tonight and should be able to try and start it again this weekend.

Solvang in April is my new goal

Big Bear is pretty much guaranteed
(I made it to Big Bear last year but under tow and no gas tank yet. When I got there, they wouldn't let me in with the tow vehicle and I had to park two blocks away and walk in)

about your headers, I learned that if you use 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water, It will eat the the rust off the headers(wheels etc...) You have to let the solution set on the surface for about 2 hours then clean and reapply till your happy. worked for me. Smile

In between all of the normal excuses, I've been sneaking in a few hours here and there and progress is being made.

There was a setback when I pulled the #1 spark plug to verify TDC of the complete motor I intended to use. What I saw when I shined a flashlight into the cylinder had me pulling the motor back out. The cylinders were, at some point, full of water and the walls were too far gone to hone and re-ring.

Just finished building a new motor: 1915cc with dual Dellorto 40's

This is the dash panel I made.

After a visit to the wood working store and picking out several pieces different colored woods, this is my attempt to create something similar to an old school wood surfboard:

I'll get new switches and knobs this week.

I removed the idiot lights and back lit the speedometer with a led strip and filled in all the holes.

Wow! On top of that body being spectacular, that dash is really superb.

Incredible dash! Love the mirror effect with such a bling polish!

I do have to warn you though.. Somebody here showed a picture of the color to my wife, and she's considering the same blue/red = purple for her Manxter that we're ordering at the end of the year. At least it's not the same colored Kick-Out.

Beautiful work here!
