Although your method is actually OK from an electrical point of view, I suggest you take a look at crimping pliers and uninsulated terminals. A mid-range crimping plier (china made but of decent quality) can be rather inexpensive (anything between 10-20€) and I've never regret buying one as I found it useful both for car and home applications. It bends the little terminal "wings" inwards (sort of a "B" shape) and makes almost impossible to remove the terminal without cutting the wire, without need of soldering (esp. if you use brass terminals that give better conductivity).
Only advice is to avoid the cheap "tin" pliers that usually come in inexpensive "everything-in-one" tool bundles, as they are mostly a joke: they twist just by looking at them. _________________ cars:

Hopkin's diagram tells you that the emergency flasher switch is on fuse number 12.
But according to this picture:
(picture is from this site: http://www.1600i.de/)
On fuse number 12 is:
Blinklichter = indicator light (in dashboard I think)
Benzinanzeige = fuel gauge
Armaturenbrettbeleuchtung = speedometer lights
Ruckbeleuchtung = reverse lights
Strange that there is difference between the diagram and the picture, in the picture the emergency flasher in on fuse 9 (warnblinklicht). Maybe it's a build year difference?
Is the fuse popping when you put the car in reverse? _________________ homepage

Then I guess diagram #1 I posted is of more help
Have a look at www.1600i.de that Gerrelt referenced, there is lots of good technical data specific to the '92-'04 Mexican's.
Also have a read of my thread about possible engine fire hazard, Gerrelt originally brought this to my attention. There is a possiblity of a short in the engine bay that can cause a fire. The fix is simple:

I was at a show this weekend and a vendor was selling old copies of Hot VW's. One of them had an article comparing a '99 water cooled New Beetle to a '99 air cooled Beetle (both were new cars at the time of printing). (The copy I picked up was dated Mar 1999).
On the last page I found a comparison chart between the two cars, and an article explaining how to get a 'new' air-cooled Beetle in the US. (The article refers to Beetlemex). Makes one wonder how many of these 're-panned' Mexican Beetles exist.
There is also a picture of on 'open-air', that's the first picture I've seen in a publication. (There are two versions, it looks to me like the 'other' version, not the one I have):

I saw the Beetlemex operation in person back in '97. It was a real dirt-floor operation.
Here's my Mexi. It's a Low-mileage 1997 with A/C from La Paz, Baja, Calif. Nothing is altered from stock. (She's squinting because she has't seen daylight in a while.) Not a scratch on her.
I did my own "repanning" as unobtrusively as possible, and she's registered as a '73. Look for her in the classifieds soon.

Yes, I think it's a different top. The open position looks to be the same as the one in a flyer I posted a while back. The one in the flyer below has a square window, my has a more tri-angular window. I seem to remember reading on another post that there were two companies that did the roofs, sorry I didn't keep the reference.
Also I saw the white one for sale in Florida. The car looks nice, priced a little high, I ony paid 7K for mine but I had to have it shipped to Canada, which cost me another 6500. (including brokerage fees, pickup, shipping, government fees, inspection and license).
Here's the link for the car vwgirl refers to:

Here's another gem that was sent to me by my friends at OMNICAR in Germany. This is a simplfied list of the different types of Beetles that have been manufacturered over the years. At the top of the charts the different versions of Mexican Beetles are listed:
