There is also a production number (PKN) stamped on the body near the rear engine (see picture). This can be decoded using the following formula:
PKN structure:
Example: 23-1-8078 or 2318078
23 Week of the year (01 – 52)
1 Day of the week
8 Identification range – ('8' indicates Type 1 Sedan [Beetle])
078 Consecutive number off the line
For a 2003 model this PKN would indicate the 78th Type 1 Beetle built on Monday June 2nd.
Based on that formula and the number in the picture my car was the 85th car built on Wednesday, June 4 1997:

I have one that doesn't seem to follow the formula. Any ideas? Chassis is ball joint/ swing axle with Mexico stamp under rear seat. Chassis # looks like it may have been hand stamped in. It was titled as a '69. Thanks!

Your car looks much older than mine, to me it looks like a '69 made in Mexico (as opposed to a 90's version that was repanned onto a early chasis).
The book I have shows that only 24,437 Beetles (Vocho's ) were made in Mexico in 1969. They would be Swing Axle, as far as I know IRS was only sold in US and Canada. You have a rare car!
This would pre-date the PKN that I referred to in my post. I don't see anything referenced in my book that looks like the number in your post. If you think you have an original engine, the number might help determine the source.
A birth cerificate might help, but I think they only issue them for vehicles built in Germany. |

Sorry, no engine number. PO sold it years ago. I bought what was left. I bought it as a parts car, but am wondering if it should be saved. |

Any other numbers, it's definately a Mexican build:
This bracket was used to move the car around during assembly at Puebla:
Same bracket on my car:

This seems to be the only other number. Nothing on door, post or under front lid. |

11D0xxxxxx would make it an '83 which makes a little more sense based on your photo of the car.
41,810 Beetles made in '83, about average per year (for the Mexi's) from what I see in the book.
Maybe not so rare in Mexico, but there are not too many '83 Mexi's rolling around outside of Mexico.
For reference, this '83 was posted back on the second page of this thread:

Hi Hopkin, im about to rebuild my transmission and I have another thread about this, and I need to know what (ring and pinion and gears) this 1999 mexican beetle transmission has. Do u have any idea or any info on this. I tried looking for this and haven't been able to find any information about it.
Here is this thread if interested or for future mexican beetle owners http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7395244#7395244
Thanks in advance for any help. |

wellcraft:
Here's a couple pictures that Antonio has posted, the mirrors are the same design as the chrome ones.
I replaced some faux chrome cheap-o ones on my car with a set from Antonio a couple of years ago. One thing I noted, the surface area of the VW of Mexico mirrors from Antonio was smaller than the cheap-o versions (about 5-10% smaller):

Are those metal or plastic?
I still waiting for Antonio to reply to my emails. Hope he is doing ok as I haven't heard from him for the last 3 or 4 weeks and I would like to order a few things.
Thanks for the pics, that'd what I wanted. Though of painting mine but since they are chrome that might not be a good idea. |

sorry hopkin, a question out of curiosity. I've just noticed from your pics that your bug has a straight arm mirror on both sides instead of the usual straight arm on the left / curved arm on the right (as in Antonio's pics). Was it a deliberate choice from you, maybe to get better rear vision with the top down? Or had the set up been made back in the UK and you just kept it when replacing the mirrors? _________________ cars:

Garba:
It wasn't an intentional choice on my part, I ordered 2 black finish mirrors from Antonio and those are two he shipped me. I never really gave it much thought until I saw a picture of a curved mirror.
The chrome finish mirror (it was put on in the UK according to one of the receipts that came with car) had a plastic chrome finish (ie cheap), but the reflective area was bigger. I don't know what type of mirror the car had when it was in Germany, only that it had to be changed for the initial MOT in the UK.
The arm length on the UK mirror looks shorter, (not curved). [I don't have the UK mirrors anymore; I sold them at a swap meet].
I don't have any trouble viewing out the right hand mirror that I have, I don't know if the curved arm would be any different.
Mirror while the car was in the UK:

While I'm here, I found this picture from a couple years ago. I haven't seen any pictures on Samba of anyone's car/bus taken with ducks:

Intresting, I don't remember reading anything about swapping stock mirrors in the homologation requirements for the UK... maybe it's because it is a LHD car? Oh, well, I guess it's not so important.
Anyway, I like the "symmetrical" look of your bug's mirrors. _________________ cars:

Who knows the meaning of this sticker? :
It's found in the spare wheel well, behind the spare wheel.
It might be a German inspection thingy.. _________________ homepage

Do bugs have the threaded insert for a second mirror underneath the sheet metal on the door? My 914 did, but I've yet to actually drill into a Beetle door for this purpose. _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6. Also, my '83 goes under the knife today so I can hopefully have it ready for the spring. Pray to the corrosion gods for me, please. I really don't want to do heater channels!! _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6.
