Who knows the meaning of this sticker?

It's the light beam deflection sticker, many other VW's (Golfs, etc.) had them at 1.2% (VW Part # 323000333).

I replaced mine with a 1.2% (PN 323000333) as I couldn't find a 1.5%. It appears to me that the stickers were applied to our cars for import to Germany, probably a regulation. Do you have an ID plate like mine, it's clearly German not Mexican and mistakenly shows Volkswagen AG as the manufacturer (should be VW of Mexico).

The masking tape is a 'high tech' paint code sticker Laughing

Do bugs have the threaded insert for a second mirror underneath the sheet metal on the door? My 914 did, but I've yet to actually drill into a Beetle door for this purpose.

bandi:

Mine has a threaded insert on the passenger door, I think it may have been market specific on the older Beetles. I don't see a lot of passenger mirrors on the older Beetles.

Good luck with the car, hopefully we can hook up at a show this spring/summer Very Happy

Thanks Hopkin!

The German 1600i forum gave the same explanation.

Yes, I have the same ID plate. I will check tomorrow (it's in the garage) what it says.
I took the 1.5% sticker of with a stanley knife (only the knife) it is hardly damaged. Of course it doesn't stick anymore.
It will not go back on the car as it is not necessary here in the Netherlands.
If you are really into originallity, I can send it to you. But you will have to pay for the stamp.. Smile

my ID plate is a laminated card glued under the spare wheel. IIRC mexican beetles did not originally came with one, so they had to be added by the importer (another top-notch work... Sad ).

Manfred (on 1600i) sent me this picture. I think I prefer the metal tag.

the set up is similar but the plate itself is different. I'll take a shot.

Thanks! Sounds good. Looks like I'll be rolling around with new heater channels by then... got the carpet removed and the surface where they meet up with the floorpan is just rotten. Might as well do it right, I plan on keeping this car forever.

as promised, albeit a bit late (have been sidetracked by a vintage sewing machine... don't ask) here's a pic of the crappy importer VIN plate:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

as you can see it's just a printed laminated card, even more basic than the one hopkin posted, and it's held by some sort of elastic glue, likely silicone (you can see some of it on the left of the plate).

I could do better so I made this:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

it lists the same information as the importer's plate, but it's made in the style of 90s VW OE sticker tags. it's still laminated paper but IMHO looks much better.

unfortunately, since the car got type approved with the crappy plate, I could not legally remove it (I doubt anyone would have noticed, but better safe than sorry). I left that in place and sticked mine nearby so that the valid VIN plate is still that one.

Agreed, great improvment over the original importer's tag. Very Happy Very Happy

Here in the Netherlands that plate doesn't matter. The number stamped into the tunnel of the floorpan is the number that identifies the car.
Is this different in Italy?

yes and no. while there isn't a precise regulation concerning the content of the plate or its placement, etc. if the car had one when it was first inspected by the italian DOT before issuing the new plates it cannot then be changed legally without having a new one issued by the builder or the original importer.

Something came in the mail today. I'm rather impressed with the accuracy- even the seats are right!

Nice, it matches the colour and upholstery on your car. Did you custom order it?

I have an Ultima Edition by Schuco:

Pleasant evening in Ottawa tonight, light snow, so I thought I'd back the car out and take a picture with the house decorations in the background.

It didn't come as good as I hoped, but here it is anyways:
