@hopkin: good that it didn't happen during your roadtrip!
I've spotted an American open-air, in one of the Chris Vallone video's.
To to 4 minute 24 seconds (or use this link):

I haven't seen many red ones. _________________ homepage

Flanders NJ is about 8 hours from me. I had thought about going to this show, now I wish I had of gone.
I suspect the red Open Air is also a BeetleMex car, or similar (rebuilt onto an older chassis) due to the historic 'QQ' New Jersey license plate.
Here's a screen grab from the YouTube and also a picture of a red open air that I found a while ago. Do you think they are the same car, the tail lights are different but both have a similar third brake light:

Enjoyed this show very much. I've never seen so many Air-Cooled VW's in one place in my life.
Yes that car was a BeetleMex car. If i remember correctly the description said it was a "74" but don't quote me on that. The first time I've seen one in person. The video capture doesn't due it justice.
If it wasn't for emissions and safety standards here in the US, THIS is was the 2012 to present Beetle SHOULD be. Didn't get a chance to meet the owner but if you are here, THAT IS ONE BEAUTIFUL LOOKING BEETLE YOU HAVE THERE. _________________ Jim Douglas....I am Not. |

I was able to locate a new exact match tire (a new Cooper CS4) for my car, the CS4's have been discontinued for a while. I found the tire at a dealer in the states and had to travel to Ogdensburg, NY to pick it up.
The tire I replaced had very little tread wear, and it would had been a shame to put a non-matching tire on, or toss the other 3 just to have matching tread pattern. (The replacement CS5's have a different tread).
Here's a picture of the new and old tire (still in rim), and after I had it mounted:
Just after my flat tire, my gas gauge started to act up, it would drop to empty and 'float' up and down for a while, finally just read empty (yes, I had gas ). Fortunately, for some reason I had ordered a spare float/sender from Antonio a couple years ago and was able to easily diagnose and quickly fix the problem:
The old one had yellowed quite a bit:
Meanwhile, I attended a show in Kitchener Ontario (the Berlin Klassik) a couple weeks back (I took the 'Scotland' picture on the way back) and won first in my class. The show is mostly water-cooled VW, Mercedes, Porsches, any German make. Not many Air-cooled there, so not much competition but still a nice win. They didn't know which class to put me in, so I was entered in the 68-79 Beetle class. They had never had a post '79 air-cooled Beetle enter before.

The red car that was at Flanders is owned by j.pickens here on the site. I think he's had it for at least 10 years at this point. I believe it's a '99 _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

My latest acquisition; a Spanish language advert for an Open Air, or should I say Escarabajo Convertible 1600i:

Thanks! I saved the scans.
This made me do a search with the word "Escarabajo" and "techo convertible" with which I found out that there are some open-airs in Spain and in Chile.
And I also found this advert:
Volkswagen Escarabajo Open-Air (97) by Yves 1976, on Flickr
Not sure where it's from, it might be Portugal? (edit: probably not, the add is in spanish, not in portugees...)

I spot "punta arenas" in the text below, and the "$" symbol is also used for the chilean peso, so I'd guess it's from Chile. _________________ cars:

The original post on flickr for Gerrelt's scan says that the add is from Chile.
I bought my flyer from a seller in Spain (5 Euros).
On closer inspection, it appears that the importer (whose name is conspicuously not shown) liberally copied parts the 1995 VW of Mexico flyer (which I also have).

I was looking around on the internet last night and found these pictures of VW Vans, and look what's in the background, my car.
These pictures were taken in the UK at VW Evolution, a restoration shop that was next door from where I bought my car:

Where can I find a roof kit like the one that is on this red beetle? |

there are companies that can rebuild the soft top but the complete kit is AFAIK no longer available. try asking Antonio Trejo, he may be able to find a used one for you.
edit: just seen from your other posts that you have a '74 super, this kit won't work on your bug as it's intended for standard roofs. _________________ cars:

Drop a note to Peter Theobold at http://www.decohaus.de/
The website is in German, you have to look around for a reference to Kafer Open Air.
He has done restorations on these roofs, and fabricates replacement parts.
From Gerrelt's gallery (some parts from Deco Haus):

I posted this on my facebook page, but I'll post it here as well.
It was 71F today (22C) record warm for November 5. (Usually snow by now). Bonus, we haven't had any weather cold enough for the roads to be salted.
The sun was out so I was able to go for nice drive with the roof open. I stopped at the waterfalls in Almonte, Ontario for a photo:

You can see the blue connecter ( ) which connects a yellow wire to the white-black wire:
|
so, finally I had time to address that blue thingy, decided to use one of these:
(here on my diode contraption for the brake warning light).
a bit hard to do as I had to pull out both the radio and the headlights' switch, but I'm quite pleased with the result. after the work, applied packaging material to prevent rattles:
also, I used some zip ties to make sure the wires from the headlights' switch do not interfere with the wiper linkage
and a final shot of the current look of the back of my dashboard. the bug is now "blue-connector-thingy" free!

Why do Mexican beetles kill their batteries if left un-driven for a couple of days? I have talked to a couple of other owners and they all mention the same issue. My 96 will kill the bat in about a week. |

I don't have that problem with my '96, it sits most of the winter and always starts without a problem.
Something must be drawing power all the time, newer electronics (ie your stereo) are always 'on' can drain the battery. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

Mine doesn't do it either. Maybe it has something to do with the alarm module? _________________ homepage

Gerrelt, did you disconnect your alarm module?
I bypassed mine using the instructions on 1600i.de. (Actually I modified the module so that it is non-functional, other than by-passing the alarm. That way it appears to be plugged in, as stock). _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)
