No worries I only took the breather off for the picture.
Besides 24 C today, first day out in the car. It's may snow tomorrow, so I went for a drive instead of fixing anything. Roof open, windows down, tunes up!
It was a little cooler by the (Ottawa) river, but I stopped for a photo anyways

Fixed, good investment of 15 minutes. The wire wasn't worn through on my car but you can see the shiny part on the fan shroud where the wire touched.
Second pic shows plastic cover over the wire. I also wrapped a little extra electrical tape (under the plastic cover) where the wire touches the fan shroud.

Nice work, that looks factory.
Cool pictures too! The one in the snow is excellent. _________________ homepage

so yesterday I went to make a similar work on my car and was quite pleased to discover that my wire assembly, while looking exactly as hopkin's and Gerrelt's "before" pics, sits about 1cm above the fan shroud.
The assembly has a more pronounced bend (about 90° I'd say) and t's held in position (quite firmly) by the clamp on the shroud, and the only way to make it touch it would be to push hard from above.
I suspected a corrective action by the PO, but my shroud doesn't even have wear signs on it as hopkin's so I guess this was some sort of quick fix from the factory.
I left it alone for now, I'm going to keep an eye on it though. _________________ cars:

Well no one else is posting any photos, so I thought I'd put up another one of my favorites to contrast the depressing snow picture. I took this picture last spring.

There are two versions:
1. The ones that where converted by (or commissioned by) VW Mexico. Recognizable on by the rear window. The window is not square, but the sides are angled inside. If the ragtop fabric wasn't replaced at one time, of course.
2. In Germany there was a company called Wennsauer that converted normal beetles. They used a kit that looked a lot like the first version, but the rear window was square. This kit has fragile plastic components, so they say. _________________ homepage

I know of a few in the US and Canada (including mine ), but most of them were sold in Europe.
Google 'Open Air' or 'Open Air Kafer' and you should see more pictures.
In Mexico they are called 'Toldo Electrico', see below for a flyer I found a while back.
www.1600i.de has a gallery of Mexican Beetles, lots of 'open airs' posted there.

I was bored today so I thought I would fix the crappy job I did on the vapor barrier I installed when I replaced my driver's door scrapers last year.
I had cut the plastic a little short and then had to make a big hole for the door speaker (after I took the first picture below).
Today, I cut out a new one and left a 'pocket' for the speaker with only a small hole for the wires. I also used some 3M adhesive for a better seal.
I took this picture during the scraper install last year:

Got the '83 out of the barn on Saturday, installed some H4s, a rear foglight, and tossed the awful Empi Solex knock-off carb, rebuilt a nice Solex and we're ready to rock! Apparently the gaskets in the Empi carbs dissolve in gasoline- this carb was 2 years old and the float was filled with black mung that used to be the top gasket. (Hence no low speed circuit, as it clogged all of the passages.) The previous owner said this engine had a performance cam in it, and after driving the car when it's running properly- I believe him, it's got some pep!
I also installed a more period radio than the JVC CD player it came with, a Pioneer KE-4300- from 1983.
Oh yeah... I threw a German plate on the front as well, from Stuttgart! actually "SG" is Solingen. Stuttgart would be just "S".
edit. that's also a german "export" plate. it differs from regular plates in lacking the EU stripe on the left and showing on the right the date by which the car has to be exported from Germany. _________________ cars:

Looking good bandi, will you be taking it to Jitterbug this year? I'm planning on being there.
The fog light looks a little close to the stop lights, I mounted mine below the bumper. (As I saw in lots of photos of Beetles in Germany).
Here's a spec for mounting and picture of where I mounted my rear fog light. The spec says that the fog light should be at least 100mm from any stop light.

Thanks! (and thanks for the fog light info)... I'll be at Jitterbug this year, but I probably won't be bringing the '83- I haven't had any time to give the car the attention it deserves just yet, short of the work I just posted, and would like to give it a few slightly shorter trips first! _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6. Where do you guys buy ignition parts for the motors from Brazil?
I have a 9-230-081-047 distributor I want to get Points, Cap Rotor and Condenser for.
With an 047 distributor is there a cross reference number for these parts made by Bosch? |

unfortunately until now I think most if not all of the posters in this thread own mexican beetles, which have relatively more in common with their german cousins than the brazilians. In fact, while on late mexibugs the engine block was indeed made in Brazil, most of the ancillaries were either mexican- or german-made. I recall the distributor you need is out from a VW brasilia though, they were also assembled in Mexico so maybe Antonio Trejo has what you need or can give you some help. _________________ cars:

Thanks Gerrelt, for reference here's a Wensauer flyer (from www.1600i.de) that shows the square window and a picture of my car with the angled window:
