Hey Rich it's probably too late, but if you're getting to Hollbrook through Flagstaff today or tomorrow, let me know; it would be most excellent to see that beautiful bus of yours!

Dam. We went north out of Tucson through Globe to Show Low. Had I'd known sooner we would have gone to Flag and hooked up with you and topbud. _________________ __________

Made it home, woot woot!!! Bus ran great, oil sat at 180* all day. Looking right around 22 mpg today. I'll post numbers in the next few days. I didn't even have to lift a screwdriver this whole trip. Thanks JAD Machine! _________________ __________

How are you getting such good gas mileage? Does having the bigger motor help thst out a lot? |

I believe the larger engine doesn't work as hard to push the bus as a 1600 would, so It can produce good mileage. At first it wasn't very good at all. I spent a lot of time/miles trending the preformance and making tweaks. Last year on this same trip we got around 15 mpg. Since then I have changes the main and air correction jets, advanced the timing and added the Petronix module. This trip our worst tank was 18 mpg, ripping through the city.
I think I have the Pertronix installed when I did the trip last year, can't remember. I'll have to look it up. Either way the Pertronix is a great upgrade. _________________ __________

It's nice that you get that good of gas mileage Rich. My 70' is a gas PIG! 1776 but all stock other than bigger pistons with a 30/31 carb. Combined freeway and city is about 15-16.. I haven't road tripped it yet to see what all freeway miles will bring. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I remember posting on your thread. What transaxle are you running and how fast are you driving? I try to stay at 60 on the highway. I bet you could make some adjustments and get better MPGs. That carb seems small for a 1776, how do you have it jetted? _________________ __________

Very inspiring, Rich! It's great to see you bus out on the road again. I have nothing but dead engines all around me, but today I received a shot in the arm, so to speak, so maybe my 1970 will finally get out there in the next couple of months.
I have heard Tucson is really pretty, but I have never been. Flagstaff and Williams I really like, went as far east as Joe City on that trip... but not in a bus. |
