I'm sure there is more resistance but I do not notice it at all. What I do notice is the bike being up there. It's like a fin on windy days especially on a strong cross wind. |
great! I am looking into maybe doing this for longer trips, thanks for the info.... and thanks for sharing your roadtrip |

I only drove the bus Monday this week. The exhaust leak was really pissing me off and I didn't want to drive it until I got it fixed. Turns out my beer can repair held up and the leak was coming from where the header bolts on to the #2 exhaust port. Can't believe I missed that, what a rookie mistake .
I pulled the bumper, rear apron and pulled the whole exhaust. I filled the small gap on my ehchanger with metal epoxy. I used a strait edge and was able to spread it in the gap making the tube flush again. I installed all new gaskets and the leak is gone. While things were apart I used paint stripper and a wire wheel and cleaned up the muffler. Then I primed, painted and baked it. Man it looked great when I reinstalled it. After a 30 mile trip the paint had begun to peal on the bend . Oh well, it sounds good. I also pulled the alternater pully and reprinted that, it was pealing bad. Then I rotated the tries and reset the pressure. With 2 recent post about gravel guards I wanted to install mine while things were apart. So I modified my crunched bumper bracket and got the guards installed with all new hardware.

There was noticeable wear difference in the ft and rear tires. Rear on the left ft on the right

Wow, how many miles are on those tires? And what pressure had you been running on the fronts and rears? _________________ 71 Superbug

DBM, how have you been?
5000 miles. I started high on the pressure and worked my way down with the help of the sticky. 40 rear 35 front. I think I'm gonna go a little higher maybe 45/40. I was blown all over the road today with the current pressure and remember it handling the wind better a little higher. Just another thing I can screw with. _________________ __________

Rich, your choice is like mine, more stable or more frequent tire purchases. The wear on your rear tires is from over pressure. Your first pressures are closer but still even higher than VW specified pressures. But going even higher expect much more rapid wear.
I just looked at the center tread wear pattern on my rear tires and am going to drop the pressure. It's time to experiment more with front pressures as that's more involved with stability issues. I did a 3 or 4 hour drive from Flag to Vegas when the weather service had issued a high wind warning. The direction was from the left front corner and my arms were so sore once I got to the destination.
So maybe planning would be best. Raise the pressure if winds are expected. Lower it and prevent high wear normally. I really like my Kooks and don't want to wear them out. _________________ 71 Superbug

KYB gas-a-just on all 4 corners |
The KYB GR2's up front with the gas a justs on the rear give a much better ride with winds of any sort. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

My current ft KYBs have only been on for about 4 months and somewhere around 3k miles. So I have some time before I need to change them. I will keep your combo in mind for my next set up. Although I really like how the bus handles now. It's great in the wind now conpaired to running "P" tires but we all know how aerodynamic this rigs are and I know no matter what I'll be blown around. _________________ __________

2015 trip
Got the bus all loaded up and we are ready for our trip to Tucson. There have been several changes to the bus over the past year and I'm hoping for a good trip. Thanks to everyone who posted on my brake thread, helped a lot. It is dumping snow out right now. We are looking at 100% chance of snow through the night, 100% chance of snow tomorrow in SW Colorado and 100% chance of rain through NM and AZ. We were going to camp in the Salt River Canyon again but it's going to be cold and rainy so we booked a hotel in Show Low for Saturday night and will finish the drive to Tucson on Sunday.
This year I'm hoping for better milage and lower oil temps. Last years trip I only got a best of 17 mpg. Since then I spent a lot of time rejeting the carbs and adjusting the timing. This year I'm hoping for 20+ MPG each tank. Last year my oil temp were 220+. Since then I've had a in/out oil pump to a full flow oil system installed. So temps should stay around 180*.
I will post plent of pics and post often, as always. Thanks for reading. _________________ __________

Awwww yeah! That's way more hardcore than when I leave for a winter trip; gotta pack closed-toed-shoes.
Looking forward to the pics-

What a great drive! The Bone Bus is buzzing right along at 60 Mph with no problems. Oil temp has been sitting right at 160* or so and the heat has been good. We made it to Gallup in just over a half of tank. We are having lunch in downtown Gallup just off Route 66.
Roads were a little hairy leaving this morning but the Hankooks handled just fine.
I should start a bays and state line signs thread.

Nice thread. Sounds like a fun trip.
We are about to embark down that way as the first leg of our cross country trip. Spit out some good "must see's" and good spots to stop for a night or two for us, will ya? No real exact plans, just hitting the road, spring ball, etc.
Good luck out there. Perhaps we will run into you somewhere _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle |
