Has anyone run these?

General Altimax
215/60 R16
Load Range: SL
Load Index:98T
Max PSI:44

Do they meet the standards required for a westy?

Tire Rack has them on sale right now. Thinking of pulling the trigger on them.

Thanks

The Altimax RT- and HP-branded tires do not meet minimum specifications. All of them are standard load passenger car tires; their max loads need to be reduced by 9%. When reduced, they come in under the minimum 1433 lbs. Also, from the first post: "Rule of thumb, tires with at least 50psi max inflation are likely to meet spec; tires with 44psi max inflation are marginally okay."

Learn from my costly error: I had 15" Pirelli tires that matched your Altimax's specs... tire treads were at the start of the wear limit just 4 years and 20,000 miles later. Confused

The reason I asked is that if we go with the 9% reduction of a 98T (1653lbs) load rated tire, I get 1504lbs. Which I thought should meet minimum specs, although not by much (71.23lbs).

I don't see that one listed on Tirerack. Did you mean 215/65R16 instead?
Those are LI 98 on sale for $75.

They may meet the weight carrying requirement but I prefer stronger tires myself.

I see there is also a $50 rebate for 4. Pretty decent price for that much tire.

i'll throw this one in here for the eurovan owners still holding on to the 15" wheels and getting ready for winter...vredestein comtrac winter, ebay seller: waukegantire

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-COMTRAC-WINTER-P...233906bda4

they have the correct rating (102). i loved them in the snow last year even at 50% worn in front and and about 15% left at the back. i plowed through snow like no other vehicle i've ever owned with these. i just ordered 2 new ones and this place shipped my set out within 1 hour of "buying it now" with free shipping. their store seems to have a good selection on other brands too.

215-65-16 tires in XL are usually rated 102. Those tires appear to come in rating 98 SL in that size. Where did you see otherwise?

I'm picking them up at pep boys, I haven't seen them yet, but in several tire store websites I found the 99w rating @51psai but on the falken site they don't list it. I wasn't aware of the XL rating till the store manager brought it up, I'll see monday what the tire has on it. It's a 100 dollars a tire plus a 60 dollar mail in rebate, it's an all season tire supposedly rated for light snow.

I'll be curious to learn if your tires turn out to be XL and 99, in the 215-65-16 size. Falken says they are SL and 98. There is some general structure to the tire load ratings though I have seen exceptions. Normally an XL tire is rated at 4 points higher load index than the same size tire in SL. The usual 215-65-16 SL load index is 98. Then XL versions are 98+4 making them load 102.

They've got a ton of tires in the 950 family, makes you wonder how they screwed up the ratings. I have not seen the ratings for XL just the 99v which is not listed on falken specs and again it's a 60 not 65. I might run to pepboys just to see the tire today, it has an interesting tread pattern. The XL rating was read by the store manager when he ordered it.

it's interesting that all the falken 950 have 50 psi rating, wouldn't that indicate a heavier duty tire. Also on the first page of this thread, it has a falken 215-60-16, which has the xl rating at 99h, it's the ze 612

I went to pep boys checked out the tire and it is a 99v extra load, it has some serious tread on it, definitely should be good for snow., I should have taken a picture of the label and tread.

So did you get the Falken 950 tires? Do you like them? What does it say on the sidewall for the number and types of plies? Weight rating in lbs?

I got the tires, so far so good, they are marked extra load tires, 1709lbs@51psi, which indicates a heavier load tire. As far as plies there are two sidewall plies and 5 tread plies, 2 polyester, 2 steel and 1 polyamide ply. I felt a michelin defenders sidewall at the store and it was very soft while the falkens sidewall was very stiff.I think the sidewall issue isn't as critical on the 16" tire cause it's an inch shorter than the 14" tire.

I have been running the vredestein comtrac(non winter version) 205/65/15 on my 2wd hardtop vanagon for a few years now and they are a great tire. The have no noticeable road noise, long wear and the tread is decent enough that I have had it on various dirt roads and never had any unusual traction issues.
Somehow I found a bay area retailer online and they ordered that specific tire for me and it has worked great.

Well, here they are... Continental VANCO 185/? R14 C load range D 102/100Q And you know what? That seam on the sidewall reminds me of the retreads I used to buy for my VW BEETLE back in the 60s. And these are made in Brazil. Does anyone think these could be retreads sold as new? Oh, wait! Should I say "recycled, repurposed and returned to service-tires?
