|
|
Picked up a little 1960 arctic Canadian standard last October and after attempting to clean out my VW's, I thought I had this car sold last week. Turns out the buyer was a little a flaky and backed out after giving me an unsolicited deposit.
Which is not a bad thing since it's actually a pretty cool little car. So the plan is to fix the following items and drive the hell out of it.
It will be a slow build though as I ave a couple of other things I'm working on first
fix the passenger side quarter panel- there's some bondo in it
fix a nick in the deck lid
look into the dime sized rust on the a pillar
Rear fenders are a shade off from the body
clean up under the hood
re-spray the whole car
new wiring harness -ordered
Get rid of the ugly plastic brake reservoir
the bugpack muffler is ugly and will be replaced
replace the msd 7 for something less "racy" more street friendly
the car doors are perfect except that someone has drilled them for turbo mirrors-car now has Talbot type mirrors and they are useless- not in the pics
I've got an old auto meter 3905 tach kicking around that I'm going to throw in it and a set of steel sprint stars for it

Looks pretty solid.
Agree with you about that muffler!
I know the brake reservoir looks ugly and wrong, but I'm assuming this car has upgraded to a dual circuit master cylinder, and as such it might not be a bad idea to keep it. Or maybe get one you can mount on top of the reservoir and then bolt up a stock one in the trunk just for looks.
I think the interior would look better with darker door panels, those are just too white. |

Well, it's a "Canadian Custom" which were a step up from the Euro Standards. |

Wouldn't a '60 standard have semiphores and a three spoke steering wheel?
Also i thought standard came without trim? |
Car does have the wrong steering wheel and I believe it should have black dash knobs. As I understand it the trim is correct for a CDN standard and no semi's _________________ VW's hate me |

change was for the '56 model year on deluxes or US models but I thought standard everywhere else had three spoke wheel until somewhere in the early-mid 60's
I have also heard that the Canadian models had some weird mixes of things that don't fit in with all the US and euro changes
anyways it's a nice bug _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

Small update but no pics... sorry about that
Ordered a new AA stainless steel sidewinder header and muffler. Say goodbye to the modo bugpack muffler.
Decided to steal the tires off of the buggy and mount the steel empi sprint stars on them that I picked up for the beetle. So the 60 will be rocking 145's front and 205/70 rears
Looking to get the tires/rims mounted on friday and possibly on the car this weekend. Along wth starting the rewire _________________ VW's hate me |

So i finally sorted out what I'm doing with the car... tear down began today
Got the sprint stars mounted on the car and ended up using the aluminum ones from the buggy
Also took the mondo muffler off...
All the rust on the car is light surface rust.. .it will clean up real nice
Since I'm storing this beetle up at dads shop...a pic of dads 59

Spent a couple of hours on the car. So far there have been no "big" surprises
Filling in the antenna holes

you are not going to be happy with these in the wet pnw. the last set I had didn't like to stop quick or take corners well
I would suggest looking into getting a set of 195 or 185 50 series tires in the future _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

It's slow going but we're starting to put a dent in it. Got some more demolition done last night.
And I'm not sure whether to keep this ignition or downgrade to a smaller 6al? The other option is to lose the MSD dist and run a standard VW setup...

Thanks... I've run 145 and 135's on a couple of other cars. The 145's generally do ok for me and I tend not to drive the beetles in the rain... unless I get caught out in it _________________ VW's hate me |

So the car is stored at my dad's (about a 45min drive north) which means I'm not getting up there to work on it a whole lot... so shout out to my dad who's been doing a bunch of cutting and fabing... Thanks Dad!
outer skin on the lower pillar was slightly torn... so it's getting a resurface
No more turbo or talbot mirrors
fixed the lip that the carpet ties into/under
And picked up a set of wide 5 disks for the car today _________________ VW's hate me |

few small updates
started picking at some of the trouble spots... found some sweet rust
The problem spot that was the most obvious... some heavy bondo sculpting
Running turn signals in the headlights... debated on this one but I like the fender lines sooth
rear wells look really clean.. not sure what the crazy whit stuff was but it comes of like wall paper. kinda cool
This side was started by the last owner... heat would have avoided the digging scratches
front corner just about done
Car got a body lift
You can see the red patch panel that was pop riveted on... more about this later
And behind door number one
damn.. the hole got bigger
that's getting a little better

crappy photo... but you may get the idea. For some reason the original German metal was painted red by someone... weirdness continues
crusty and solid under the front
